The effects of a therapy dog intervention on dental fear and anxiety in adult patients undergoing dental procedures: a pilot study.

Dental anxiety poses challenges for providing effective oral healthcare. While therapy dogs have shown promise in various medical and mental health contexts, their use for alleviating dental anxiety in adults remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the emotional and physiologic effects of therapy dogs on self-reported dental anxiety. Adults with dental anxiety were randomly assigned to an intervention group (DOG; n = 19) or a standard care group (SC; n = 14). Standard self-report measures were used to assess dental anxiety (Index of Dental Anxiety and Fear [IDAF-4C+]), depressio

A Randomized Controlled Trial of Animal-assisted Activities for Pediatric Oncology Patients: Psychosocial and Microbial Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence about the effectiveness and safety of dog visits in pediatric oncology is limited. METHOD: We conducted a randomized controlled trial (n=26) of dog visits versus usual care among pediatric oncology inpatients. Psychological functioning and microbial load from hand wash samples were evaluated. Parental anxiety was a secondary outcome. RESULTS: We did not observe a difference in the adjusted mean present functioning score (-3.0; 95% confidence interval [CI], -12.4 to 6.4). The difference in microbial load on intervention versus control hands was -0.04 (95% CI, -0.60 to 0

Characterization of Horse Use in Therapeutic Horseback Riding Programs in the United States: A Pilot Survey.

With increasing public scrutiny on animal welfare, it behooves those involved in the equine industry to revisit best management practices to ensure these support healthy horses. There is little published research on how horses are used in the equine industry, particularly in therapeutic horseback riding (THR) programs. Although there is a large amount of information on the benefits of THR programs to the participants, there is little published information available about the horses. Therefore, the objective of this survey was to gather data regarding horse use and care in Professional Associat

One-session computer-based exposure treatment for spider-fearful individuals--efficacy of a minimal self-help intervention in a randomised controlled trial.

Computer-based self-help treatments have been proposed to provide greater access to treatment while requiring minimum input from a therapist. The authors employed a randomised controlled trial to investigate the efficacy of one-session computer-based exposure (CBE) as a self-help treatment for spider-fearful individuals. Spider-fearful participants in a CBE group underwent one 27-min session of standardised exposure to nine fear-eliciting spider pictures. Treatment outcome was compared to spider-fearful control participants exposed to nine neutral pictures. Fear reduction was quantified on a s

Cortisol concentrations in substance use disorder patients undergoing short-term psychotherapy incorporating equine interaction compared to cognitive behavioral therapy: A preliminary study.

Psychotherapy incorporating equine interaction (PIE) is emerging as an effective supplemental substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. Benefits are attributed to decreased stress levels associated with the presence of the horse, however, research concerning stress parameters related to short-term equine interaction during SUD treatment is limited. Therefore, the purpose of this preliminary study was to investigate cortisol concentrations in SUD patients participating in PIE for two weeks compared with those in traditional cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Salivary cortisol samples were collec

Effectiveness of Practices To Increase Timeliness of Providing Targeted Therapy for Inpatients with Bloodstream Infections: a Laboratory Medicine Best Practices Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Bloodstream infection (BSI) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Rapid identification of bloodstream pathogens is a laboratory practice that supports strategies for rapid transition to direct targeted therapy by providing for timely and effective patient care. In fact, the more rapidly that appropriate antimicrobials are prescribed, the lower the mortality for patients with sepsis. Rapid identification methods may have multiple positive impacts on patient outcomes, including reductions in mortality, morbidity, hospital lengths of stay, and antibiotic us

Safety and efficacy of the polymer enhanced AS-ELARIS® pedicle screw system using ultrasonically liquefied polylactide: a short-, mid-, and long-term posterolateral fusion study in sheep.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar fusion surgery using pedicle screws and intervertebral cages is frequently performed to treat low back pain when conservative therapies were unsuccessful. Screw loosening, however, remains one of the most common postoperative complications. The purpose of this study was to show that the fixation with polymer-enhanced AS-ELARIS® Pedicle Screws by ultrasonic-assisted extrusion of 0.104 mL resorbable polylactide per screw, represents a suitable alternative to current fixation techniques. METHODS: Forty adult female sheep were enrolled in the study and posterolateral fusions we

Spondylodiscitis and bacteremia due to Staphylococcus hyicus in an immunocompetent man.

INTRODUCTION: Staphylococcus hyicus is a coagulase-variable Staphylococcus spp. well-known by veterinarians since it is the major agent of a severe cutaneous infection in piglets called exudative epidermitis. In other species the symptoms of infection are quite different. Human cases are uncommon but seem to occur more frequently after repeated contacts with farm animals. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 58-year-old man suffering from debilitating subacute lumbar pain, in whom diagnosis of infectious spondylodiscitis was based on spine MRI and positive microbiological results. A strain of

The promise of Hox11+ stem cells of the spleen for treating autoimmune diseases.

The spleen of human adults uniquely possesses a reservoir of multilineage adult stem cells that express the developmental transcription factor HOX11. In contrast to hematopoietic stem cells, HOX11+ stem cells hold potentially broader therapeutic applications because they are less lineage restricted. HOX11/TLX1 is part of a homeodomain gene family essential for organogenesis of the spleen and for contributions to development of hindbrain, cochlea, pancreas, salivary glands, among other organs and tissues. While HOX11/TLX1 displays widespread patterns of expression during embryogenesis, its expr

Ocular phenotype in a mouse gene knockout model for infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis.

Mutations in the human protein palmitoyl thioesterase-1 (PPT-1) gene result in an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder designated neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL), type CLN1, or infantile NCL. Among the symptoms of the CLN1 disease are accumulation of autofluorescent lysosomal storage bodies in neurons and other cell types, seizures, motor and cognitive decline, blindness, and premature death. Development of an effective therapy for this disorder will be greatly assisted by the availability of suitable animal models. A mouse PPT-1 gene knockout model has recently been generated.

Adenoviral GDNF gene transfer enhances neurofunctional recovery after recurrent laryngeal nerve injury.

To assess the possibility of gene therapy for recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury, we examined functional and histological recovery after glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) gene transfer in a rat RLN crush model. Adenoviral vector encoding beta-galactosidase gene (AxCALacZ) or human GDNF gene (AxCAhGDNF) was injected into the crush site of the RLN. Neurons in the nucleus ambiguus on the crushed side were labeled with X-gal or GDNF immnohistochemistry after AxCALacZ or AxCAhGDNF injection. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed expression of human G

Skeletal health in DYRK1A syndrome.

DYRK1A syndrome results from a reduction in copy number of the DYRK1A gene, which resides on human chromosome 21 (Hsa21). DYRK1A has been implicated in the development of cognitive phenotypes associated with many genetic disorders, including Down syndrome (DS) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Additionally, overexpression of DYRK1A in DS has been implicated in the development of abnormal skeletal phenotypes in these individuals. Analyses of mouse models with Dyrk1a dosage imbalance (overexpression and underexpression) show skeletal deficits and abnormalities. Normalization of Dyrk1a copy number in

Cross-species transfer of viruses: implications for the use of viral vectors in biomedical research, gene therapy and as live-virus vaccines.

All living organisms are continuously exposed to a plethora of viruses. In general, viruses tend to be restricted to the natural host species which they infect. From time to time viruses cross the host-range barrier expanding their host range. However, in very rare cases cross-species transfer is followed by the establishment and persistence of a virus in the new host species, which may result in disease. Recent examples of viruses that have crossed the species barrier from animal reservoirs to humans are hantavirus, haemorrhagic fever viruses, arboviruses, Nipah and Hendra viruses, avian infl

Dog training alleviates PTSD symptomatology by emotional and attentional regulation.

BACKGROUND: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms include re-experiencing, avoidance, hyperarousal, and cognitive deficits, reflecting both emotional and cognitive dysregulation. In recent years, non-pharmacological approaches and specifically animal-assisted therapy have been shown to be beneficial for a variety of disorders such as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and PTSD. However, little is mentioned in the literature about the reciprocal effects of the animal-human interaction. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of a one-year dog training progr

Is virtual reality effective to motivate and raise interest in phobic children toward therapy? A clinical trial study of in vivo with in virtuo versus in vivo only treatment exposure.

OBJECTIVE: The first objective of this study was to assess if a combined treatment with mostly virtual reality-based (in virtuo) exposure increases phobic children's motivation toward therapy compared to children who only receive in vivo exposure. Another objective was the assessment of motivation as a predictor of treatment outcome. METHOD: Thirty-one DSM-IV-diagnosed arachnophobic participants aged from 8 to 15 years were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatment conditions: in vivo exposure alone or in virtuo plus in vivo exposure. Measures of motivation were taken at pretest and at the end of

A case report of cutaneous mucormycosis of the hand after minor trauma in a patient with acute myeloid leukaemia.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a rare but life-threatening infection, caused by fungi of the Mucorales order, which can be found in soil, rotting leaves or on animals. Through characteristic angioinvasive growth, infections with mucor spores can occur as a pulmonary, rhinocerebral or cutaneous form. Infections mainly affect immunosuppressed patients with a history of uncontrolled diabetes or haematological malignancies, among others. Treatment is multimodal and requires an immediate combination of intravenous amphotericin B therapy and serial surgical debridements. Only a limited number of cases

A Systematic Review on GLP-1 Receptor Agonists in Reproductive Health: Integrating IVF Data, Ovarian Physiology and Molecular Mechanisms.

Women of reproductive age, especially those with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), often use glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) to improve their metabolic functions. A growing body of evidence suggests that GLP-1R signaling may directly affect ovarian physiology, influencing granulosa cell proliferation, survival pathways, and steroidogenic production, in addition to its systemic metabolic effects. Nonetheless, there is a limited comprehension of the molecular mechanisms that regulate these activities and their correlation with menstrual function, reproductive potential, an
