Experiment assessment of mass effects in the rat: implications for small animal PET imaging.

In vivo imaging using positron emission tomography (PET) is important in the development of new radiopharmaceuticals in rodent animal models for use as biochemical probes, diagnostic agents, or in drug development. We have shown mathematically that, if small animal imaging studies in rodents are to have the same "quality" as human PET studies, the same number of coincidence events must be detected from a typical rodent imaging "voxel" as from the human imaging voxel. To achieve this using the same specific activity preparation, we show that roughly the same total amount of radiopharmaceutical

Manifestations of Salmonellosis in Small Ruminants in The Netherlands over a Period of 15 Years.

Salmonella spp. are major zoonotic pathogens and an important cause of foodborne disease. However, information on the occurrence of salmonellosis in small ruminants in The Netherlands is limited, and no specific control programme exists for sheep and goats. This study investigated temporal trends, serovar distribution, antimicrobial resistance patterns, and outbreak characteristics of salmonellosis in Dutch sheep and goats, using surveillance and diagnostic data from the national animal health monitoring system of Royal GD (GD). Overall, salmonellosis in small ruminants was relatively rare, bu

Monte Carlo modeling in CT-based geometries: dosimetry for biological modeling experiments with particle beam radiation.

The space radiation environment imposes increased dangers of exposure to ionizing radiation, particularly during a solar particle event (SPE). These events consist primarily of low energy protons that produce a highly inhomogeneous dose distribution. Due to this inherent dose heterogeneity, experiments designed to investigate the radiobiological effects of SPE radiation present difficulties in evaluating and interpreting dose to sensitive organs. To address this challenge, we used the Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation framework to develop dosimetry software that uses computed tomography (CT) image

Distribution of fluoride across cementum, dentine and alveolar bone in rats.

This study was undertaken to determine the fluoride distribution in cementum and neighboring hard tissues of the rat after different levels of fluoride administration via the drinking water. Specimens of cementum with underlying dentine and adjacent bone were removed from the distal roots of the first lower molars. The fluoride distribution in each specimen was determined in samples removed sequentially using an abrasive microsampling technique. Fluoride concentrations were highest at or near the surface and decreased towards the interior of cementum, dentine and alveolar bone in both control

[Contribution of animal models to HIV research].

Even today, despite triple therapy, the epidemic of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a major public health problem. In this perspective, continuous research is essential for the development of curative and vaccinal approaches. Animal models contribute to the implementation of new therapeutic and preventive strategies. We present here the characteristics of major animal models of HIV, which are non-human primates (SIV or SHIV-infected macaques and natural hosts of SIV), as well as different humanized mouse models and their advances. We will also list how they have already allowed, and

A Dual Function of Ferritin (Animal and Plant): Its Holo Form for Iron Supplementation and Apo Form for Delivery Systems.

Ferritins represent a class of iron storage proteins with detoxification functions. The importance of these proteins is reflected by their wide distribution throughout the animal and plant kingdoms. Ferritin has two forms: holo and apo. Holo ferritin can act as an efficient and safe factor for iron supplementation, whereas apo ferritin is able to serve as a promising delivery nanovehicle for nutrients and bioactive compounds. So far, the dual functions of ferritins from animal and plant sources have been extensively studied in several fields, such as food, nutrition, medicine, and materials. T

Multiple-site DNA vaccination enhances immune responses in mice.

Intramuscular delivery of plasmid DNA encoding vaccine antigens induces systemic immune responses in small animals but is less effective in inducing strong responses in larger animals species. We investigated if anatomic distribution of DNA could enhance responses to decreasing DNA doses. We show that anatomic distribution of low-dose DNA improves cell-mediated and humoral immune responses in mice. Anatomic distribution of low-dose DNA provided a dose-sparing effect for both cell-mediated immunity and humoral responses. Enhanced systemic responses correlate directly with recruitment of antigen

Tick transmission of toxoplasmosis.

Introduction: Infection with Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) causes the disease toxoplasmosis in humans and animals. Oral transmission alone may not explain the widespread distribution of this parasite over large species of host animals and geographic areas.Areas covered: Limited studies indicate the potential role of ticks in the distribution of T. gondii. The possibility of transmission of T. gondii has been demonstrated in Dermacentor variabilis, Dermacentor andersoni, Amblyomma americanum, Dermacentor reticulatus, Ixodes ricinus, Ixodes amblyomma, Amblyomma cajennense, Ornithodorus moubata a

Comparative study on the distribution of Pacinian corpuscles in the pancreas.

BACKGROUND: Pacinian corpuscles (PCs) are pressure- and vibration-sensitive mechanoreceptors found in hairless skin, external genitalia, joints, ligaments, lymph nodes, prostate, bladder, etc. While they are documented in the pancreas of cats, their presence in the normal pancreas remains speculative. PURPOSE: The present study therefore investigated the distribution of PCs in the normal human pancreas and compared the findings with those in several other animal species. METHODS: The study subjects included 74 human cadaver specimens, 3 Cynictis penicillata, 2 Saguinus mystaxs, 1 Felis domes

Seroprevalence and Epidemiology of Toxoplasma gondii in Animals in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau Area, China.

Toxoplasma gondii belongs to the Apicomplexan protozoa-an obligate intracellular parasite-causing toxoplasmosis that has a worldwide distribution and is very harmful to both human health and the livestock industry. However, the information on toxoplasmosis in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau Area (QTPA) and the seroprevalence of T. gondii in the food-borne animals in that area has been limited. Therefore, this study focused to T. gondii and toxoplasmosis to perform an indirect ELISA test based on recombinant TgSAG2 protein to establish a comprehensive record of the seroprevalence of T. gondii infec

Preclinical models to optimize treatment of tuberculous meningitis - A systematic review.

Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is the most devastating form of TB, resulting in death or neurological disability in up to 50% of patients affected. Treatment is similar to that of pulmonary TB, despite poor cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) penetration of the cornerstone anti-TB drug rifampicin. Considering TBM pathology, it is critical that optimal drug concentrations are reached in the meninges, brain and/or the surrounding CSF. These type of data are difficult to collect in TBM patients. This review aims to identify and describe a preclinical model representative for human TBM which can provide the i

Anatomy and histology of the Göttingen minipig adenohypophysis with special emphasis on the polypeptide hormones: GH, PRL, and ACTH.

The pituitary is involved in the regulation of endocrine homeostasis. Therefore, animal models of pituitary disease based on a thorough knowledge of pituitary anatomy are of great importance. Accordingly, we aimed to perform a qualitative and quantitative description of polypeptide hormone secreting cellular components of the Göttingen minipig adenohypophysis using immunohistochemistry and stereology. Estimates of the total number of cells immune-stained for adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH), prolactin (PRL), and growth hormone (GH) were obtained with the optical fractionator technique using

The distribution of nerves supplying the testis, epididymis and accessory sex glands of Suncus murinus.

Chronic testicular pain remains an important challenge for urologists. Investigation of the innervation of male gonads thus becomes essential for deepening our understanding of their regulatory roles in male reproductive physiology and pathophysiology. Studies of testicular innervation are mainly limited to the intratesticular peptidergic nerves of the testis by immunohistochemical and acetylcholinesterase histochemical investigations in some animals. Little is known about the detailed, overall distribution in general experimental animal testis. In this study, the distribution of nerves supply

Neuronal inclusions resembling Negri bodies in the thalamus of a red kangaroo (Macropus rufus).

Eosinophilic intracytoplasmic neuronal inclusions resembling Negri bodies, but not associated with lyssaviral infection, were detected in the ventrolateral thalamus of a young-adult, male red kangaroo (Macropus rufus). Similar neuronal inclusions, also with a regional distribution in the brain, have been reported as an incidental, possibly age-related finding in other animal species.

Balantidium coli in domestic animals: An emerging protozoan pathogen of zoonotic significance.

Balantidium coli (B. coli) is an emerging ciliated protozoan parasite of zoonotic importance which causes a disease balantidiasis in a variety of host species including pigs, camels, ruminants, equines and even human. This disease has a cosmopolitan distribution with high prevalence rates in tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world due to favorable geo-climatic conditions for the development and survival of the parasite in these regions. Main reservoir hosts for this pathogen are pigs and animals; acquire infection mainly by the ingestion of the food or water contaminated with the porcine
