Jejunal mucosal DNA content and maturation. Inverse relation to serum gastrin levels in suckling and weanling rats.

Although pentagastrin has a tropic action on intestinal mucosa in suckling rat pups, and at weaning a rise in gastrin levels coincides with maturation of the intestinal mucosa, direct correlations of serum gastrin levels and intestinal maturation have yet to be made. Ten-day-old rats were subjected either to antrectomy to produce a 43% decrease in serum gastrin levels or to fundectomy to produce a 319% increase over gastrin levels in rumenectomized or normal animals. These changes were not associated with tropic or adaptive changes in jejunal or colonic mucosa as determined by jejunal and colo

The effect of 2,3-dimercaptopropane sodium sulfonate on mercury retention in rats in relation to age.

The effectiveness of DMPS (sodium 2,3-dimercaptopropane-1-sulfonate) in reducing inorganic mercury retention was studied in 2-, 6-, and 28-week-old albino rats. 203Hg was administered IP. The chelating agent DMPS was administered by IP injection at a dose of 250 mumol/kg body weight three times, 1 day after 203Hg administration and at 24 h intervals thereafter. The whole body retention determined 1, 2, 3, and 6 days after 203Hg administration showed that DMPS decreased the body retention of mercury in all age groups, being about twice as effective in adult compared to suckling rats. The reduce

Prevalence of antibodies against Kilham virus in experimental rat colonies of Argentina.

The Kilham rat virus (KRV) is a parvovirus originally isolated from a rat sarcoma in the late 1950s. The clinical signs associated with a natural KRV infection include foetal resorption in dams, runting, ataxia, cerebellar hypoplasia and jaundice in suckling rats, and sudden death, scrotal cyanosis, abdominal swelling and dehydration in juvenile rats. The ability of this virus to produce persistent infections has resulted in a high frequency of contamination of cell cultures and transplantable-tumor system. In addition, the virus may interfere with research in other ways. The remarkable resist

Intraintestinal toxin in infant mice challenged intragastrically with Clostridium botulinum spores.

Conventionally raised suckling mice were injected intragastrically with 10(5) spores of a Clostridium botulinum type A culture. Botulism was not observed, but 80% or more of mice challenged when 8 to 11 days old had botulinum toxin in the large intestine 3 days later. Mice younger than 7 days or older than 15 days were resistant to the challenge. When in vivo toxin production was started by spores given to 9-day-old mice, toxin was present in the intestine at 1 through 7 days postchallenge but with greatest consistency between 1 and 4 days. Total toxin in an intestine ranged up to 1,920 50% le

Role of cholecystokinin in feeding and lactation.

The aim of this investigation was to study the release of cholecystokinin (CCK) in connection with feeding and lactation and to investigate the involvement of CCK in the regulation of food intake. For this purpose a method based on high performance liquid chromatography and subsequent radioimmunoassay (RIA) for the determination of CCK in plasma was developed. CCK was also determined in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) by RIA and is referred to as CCK-like immunoreactivity (CCK-LI). Different molecular forms of CCK in dog and rat plasma have been determined. These were found to differ from those

Contextual Anthropocentrism and Animal Welfare Attitudes Among German Livestock Farmers: Evidence from Survey Data.

Farm animal welfare research increasingly recognizes that farmers' welfare decisions are shaped by ethical orientations. This study examines associations between livestock farmers' contextual anthropocentrism, personality traits, farm structural characteristics, and links to animal welfare attitudes. Survey data from 619 German livestock farmers were analyzed using descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, correlations, and an ordinary least squares regression model. An anthropocentric orientation index (AOI) showed acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.72; mean = 3.68 on a

Molecular identification of Balantioides coli in asymptomatic pigs from Norwegian farms.

Balantioides coli is a ciliated intestinal parasite of pigs with known zoonotic potential. Although Norway maintains high biosecurity standards and restricts live animal imports, the prevalence of B. coli in Norwegian pig herds has not been formally evaluated. We investigated the occurrence of B. coli in faecal samples from 125 pigs across eight commercial farms and one research facility. Microscopic examination revealed trophozoites and cysts in 48 % of wet-mount preparations and 28 % of McMaster flotation samples. PCR targeting the 18S rRNA gene identified B. coli in 70.4 % of animals, with

Tremor tales: A cohort study of general and neurological signs in pigs with atypical porcine pestivirus-induced congenital tremor.

Congenital tremor (CT) caused by atypical porcine pestivirus (APPV) is a widespread disease in the swine industry. It is characterized by tremors in newborn piglets, but tremor description and association to other clinical signs are not well documented. This study's objectives were to characterize general and neurological clinical signs of APPV-induced CT and describe the progression and associations between the different signs. A cohort study was conducted including 37 pigs from litters with APPV-confirmed CT and 27 control pigs from healthy litters. All pigs were examined five times from bir

Neonatal treatment with ovarian hormones and suckling among distinct litter sizes: Differential effects on recognition memory and spreading depression at adulthood.

OBJECTIVES: Ovarian hormones (OH) and early malnutrition may affect the developing brain, with repercussions on behavioral and excitability-dependent processes. However, the possible synergistic effects of both factors have not been analyzed. In this study, we investigated the effect of treatment in early life with OH and suckling among distinct litter sizes on recognition memory, anxiety behavior, and the excitability-dependent phenomenon known as cortical spreading depression (CSD). METHODS: Female Wistar rats were suckled under favorable and unfavorable lactation, corresponding to litters

Influence of Biological Model on the Formation of the Pathogenic Properties of the West Nile Virus Isolate.

Various biological models are used to isolate West Nile virus, but their role as a selection factor that facilitates selection of isolates with certain properties is usually not evaluated. We compared pathogenic properties of three strains of the West Nile virus obtained from one sample of virus-containing material using different models: WNV Volgograd 900m/18 (on the model of suckling mice), WNV Volgograd 900a/18 (on C6/36 cells) and WNV Volgograd 900v/18 (on Vero cells). WNV Volgograd 900m/18 strain demonstrated virulent (LD50 5×103±0.005×104 PFU, p≤0.05) and neuroinvasive properties, induce

Antiviral activity of merimepodib against foot and mouth disease virus in vitro and in vivo.

Foot and mouth disease virus (FMDV), a member of family Picornaviridae, belongs to the genus Aphthovirus, which causes foot and mouth disease (FMD), a highly transmissible disease that affects cloven-hoof animals. In spite of the fact that efficient vaccines are available, effective antiviral molecules for FMD are needed to reduce viral infection during early stages of infection. In this study, merimepodib was found to efficiently inhibit FMDV replication in a dose-dependent manner. The 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of merimepodib antiviral activity against two distinct FMDV strains (O/M

A review of current timed-AI (TAI) programs for beef and dairy cattle.

This is a review of the physiology and endocrinology of the estrous cycle and how ovarian physiology can be manipulated and controlled for timed artificial insemination (TAI) in beef and dairy cattle. Estrus detection is required for artificial insemination (AI), but it is done poorly in dairy cattle and it is difficult in beef cattle. Protocols that synchronize follicle growth, corpus luteum regression and ovulation, allowing for TAI, result in improved reproductive performance, because all animals are inseminated whether they show estrus or not. As result, TAI programs have become an integra

Kinetics of mucosal ileal gamma-interferon response during cryptosporidiosis in immunocompetent neonatal mice.

The kinetics of serum and ileal interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) content were determined during recovery from cryptosporidiosis in NMRI suckling mice. A total of 60 mice aged 4 days were inoculated by intragastric gavage with 10(4) cryptosporidia (n = 30) or phosphate-buffered saline (n = 30). Six animals per group were killed on days 0, 3, 6, 9 and 13 postinoculation. Blood samples and ileum were collected. Experimental infection was followed by a rise in parasite load in the ileum starting on day 3 postinfection, which peaked at day 6 postinoculation. Ileal IFN-gamma levels increased rapidly in

Enumeration of selected leukocytes in the small intestine of BALB/c mice infected with Cryptosporidium parvum.

Neonatal, suckling BALB/c mice inoculated with Cryptosporidium parvum produce an infection characterized by continuous shedding of oocysts that spontaneously clears by the time the animals are three weeks of age. Neonatal mice were used to characterize the leukocyte subgroups present in Peyer's patches from the ileum and jejunum of Cryptosporidium-infected and healthy mice. After infection, ileal Peyer's patches showed a predominant CD8+ response, with abundant monocytes-macrophages (MOMA-2+) and nonlymphoid dendritic cells (NLDC-145+ cells). In contrast, jejunal Peyer's patches showed more T

[Values of a number of blood parameters and body growth of rats subjected to fetal and post-natal protein malnutrition].

Nests of rats, generated by mothers receiving synthetic diets of different protein content during gestation and in post-pregnancy phase, have been kept under observation during suckling and after weaning care being taken that offspring received the same diet as characterised maternal feeding. It was found that in the animals receiving hypoproteic diet (6% proteins), early induced malnutrition extended up to the 40th day of life, namely the term for the cellular subdivision of almost all organs, cuts body growth by about 80% compared to control rats, and is accompanied by a remarkable drop in p

Postpartum infertility in common chimpanzees.

The endocrine profile during normal postpartum amenorrhea in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) closely resembles that of women, and its duration is similarly extended by nursing. However, when infant chimpanzees in our colony were removed at birth, excessively prolonged postpartum amenorrhea (7-26 months duration) occurred in 24% of cases. Our endocrine studies indicate that such prolonged postpartum amenorrhea (PPAm) is a pathological condition associated with chronically elevated serum prolactin levels and galactorrhea. In the absence of nursing, we sought an alternate behavioral basis for PPAm.

A preclinical pig model of Angelman syndrome mirrors the early developmental trajectory of the human condition.

Angelman syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by severe motor and cognitive deficits. It is caused by the loss of the maternally inherited allele of the imprinted ubiquitin-protein ligase E3A (UBE3A) gene. Rodent models of Angelman syndrome do not fully recapitulate all the symptoms associated with the condition and are limited as a preclinical model for therapeutic development. Here, we show that pigs (Sus scrofa) with a maternally inherited deletion of UBE3A (UBE3A-/+) have altered postnatal behaviors, impaired vocalizations, reduced brain growth, motor incoordination, and

Animal models of human disease: severe and mild lead encephalopathy in the neonatal rat.

Inorganic lead produces cerebral dysfunction and clinically definable encephalopathies in man. To date there have been few studies on the biochemical changes in brain following exposure to inorganic lead. Studies correlating toxicity with behavioral and brain neurochemical changes following lead exposure have been hindered because adult laboratory animals are resistant to the central nervous system effects of lead poisoning. Such studies have been impeded by lack of suitable experimental models until Pentschew and Garro showed that brain lesions develop in neonatal rats when a pregnant rat new
