BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that maternal anxiety is associated with adverse pregnancy and delivery outcomes, such as preterm birth, vaginal bleedings and low birth weight.
AIMS: To examine the association of lifetime anxiety disorders and pregnancy-related anxiety and complications during pregnancy and delivery.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective-longitudinal study (MARI).
SUBJECTS: N = 306 pregnant women who were investigated repeatedly during the peripartum period.
OUTCOME MEASURES: Information on lifetime anxiety disorders was assessed using a dimensional score (lifetime anxiety liability ind

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are prevalent in youth and associated with later depressive disorders. A recent model posits three distinct anxiety-depression pathways. Pathway 1 represents youth with a diathesis to anxiety that increases risk for depressive disorders; Pathway 2 describes youth with a shared anxiety-depression diathesis; and Pathway 3 consists of youth with a diathesis for depression who develop anxiety as a consequence of depression impairment. This is the first partial test of this model following cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) for child anxiety.

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety is linked to a number of medical conditions, yet few studies have examined how symptom severity relates to medical comorbidity.
PURPOSE: The current study assessed associations between severity of anxiety and depression and the presence of medical conditions in adults diagnosed with anxiety disorders.
METHOD: Nine-hundred eighty-nine patients diagnosed with panic, generalized anxiety, social anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorders reported on the severity of anxiety and depressive symptoms and on diagnoses of 11 medical conditions.
RESULTS: Severity of anxiety and dep

Anxiety disorders are common in Parkinson's disease (PD), but are not well characterized. This study determined the prevalence and clinical correlates of all DSM-IV-TR anxiety disorder diagnoses in a sample of 127 subjects with idiopathic PD who underwent comprehensive assessments administered by a psychiatrist and neurologist. A panel of six psychiatrists with expertise in geriatric psychiatry and/or movement disorders established by consensus all psychiatric diagnoses. Current and lifetime prevalence of at least one anxiety disorder diagnosis was 43% (n = 55) and 49% (n = 63), respectively.

There has been significant interest in the role of anxiety sensitivity (AS) in the anxiety disorders. In this meta-analysis, we empirically evaluate differences in AS between anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and nonclinical controls. A total of 38 published studies (N = 20,146) were included in the analysis. The results yielded a large effect size indicating greater AS among anxiety disorder patients versus nonclinical controls (d = 1.61). However, this effect was maintained only for panic disorder patients compared to mood disorder patients (d = 0.85). Panic disorder was also associated wit

BACKGROUND: This study examined associations between anxiety and work-related outcomes in an anxiety disorders clinic population, examining both pretreatment links and the impact of anxiety change over 12 weeks of treatment on work outcomes. Four validated instruments were used to also allow examination of their psychometric properties, with the goal of improving measurement of work-related quality of life in this population.
METHODS: Newly enrolled adult patients seeking treatment in a university-based anxiety clinic were administered four work performance measures: Work Limitations Question

This article reviews four separate conceptions of obsessional compulsive disorder (OCD). The first is a movement disorder, the second is part of a wider OCD spectrum including impulsive and compulsive disorders, the third is currently classified in the DSM-IV-TR, as an anxiety disorder, and the fourth and final view that OCD is a belief disorder and forms a continuum with other belief disorders such as delusional ideation. Although there is support for the four viewpoints, and OCD is distinct from movement, anxiety and impulsive disorders, it seems reasonable to conceptualize OCD as a belief d

BACKGROUND: Despite considerable effort, the neurobiological underpinnings of hyper-responsive threat processing specific to patients suffering from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) remain poorly understood. The current functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study aims to delineate GAD-specific brain activity during immediate threat processing by comparing GAD patients to healthy controls (HC), to social anxiety disorder (SAD) and to panic disorder (PD) patients.
METHOD: Brain activation and functional connectivity patterns to threat vs. neutral pictures were investigated using event-

This study examined the relationship between the chronic disorders, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and dysthymic disorder (DD), and the more acute disorders, panic disorder (PD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) in 110 psychiatric outpatients with diagnoses of either PD, MDD, GAD, or DD. Pure, mixed, and early-/late-onset forms of the chronic disorders were compared with each other and then with PD and MDD on clinical measures and psychiatric history. Minimal differences were found between pure GAD and mixed GAD or between pure DD and mixed DD. The chronic disorders, DD and GAD, had dist

Anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and panic anxiety disorder (PAD), are a group of common psychiatric conditions. They are characterized by excessive worrying, uneasiness, and fear of future events, such that they affect social and occupational functioning. Anxiety disorders can alter behavior and cognition as well, yet little is known about the particular domains they affect. In this study, we tested the cognitive correlates of medication-free patients with GAD, SAD, and PAD, along with matched healthy participants using a probabil

OBJECTIVE: To critically review the literature examining the co-morbidity between eating disorders and anxiety disorders.
METHOD: A review of the literature on the co-morbidity between anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and eating disorders not otherwise specified and the anxiety disorders of OCD, PTSD, social anxiety, GAD, panic and agoraphobia.
RESULTS: Of the empirical studies undertaken, it is clear that anxiety disorders are significantly more frequent in subjects with eating disorders than the general community. Researchers have shown that often anxiety disorders pre-date eating disorde

BACKGROUND: The present study's aim was to examine the long-term effects (8 to 13 years post-treatment; M = 9.83 years; SD = 1.71) of the most widely used treatment approaches of exposure-based cognitive behavioral treatment for phobic and anxiety disorders in children and adolescents (i.e., group treatment and two variants of individual treatment). An additional aim was to compare the relative long-term efficacy of the treatment approaches.
METHOD: At long-term follow-up, participants (N = 67) were between 16 and 26 years of age (M = 19.43 years, SD = 3.02). Primary outcome was the targeted

Depressive and anxiety disorders are the most common mental health problems, affecting millions of people worldwide, often leading to negative outcomes in all aspects of life, including work, family, and participation in community activities. These mental health problems exhibit considerable sex- and gender-based variations, with both depressive and anxiety disorders affecting women approximately twice as often as men. The complex etiology of depressive and anxiety disorders highlights the importance of genetic susceptibility and increased sensitivity to early social environment and to later-l

Individuals with a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) anxiety or depressive disorder tend to report a lack of agency in social situations. Agency represents one dimension in the interpersonal circumplex model while communion represents the other dimension. In the present study, we mapped six anxiety and depressive disorders examined within the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA) onto this model. To this end, we used the structural summary method to reduce Inventory of Interpersonal Problems scores of NESDA Wave 6 participants with a current diagnosis (n

Evidence indicates that anxiety disorders arise from an imbalance in the functioning of brain circuits that govern the modulation of emotional responses to possibly threatening stimuli. The circuits under consideration in this context include the amygdala's bottom-up activity, which signifies the existence of stimuli that may be seen as dangerous. Moreover, these circuits encompass top-down regulatory processes that originate in the prefrontal cortex, facilitating the communication of the emotional significance associated with the inputs. Diverse databases (e.g., Pubmed, ScienceDirect, Web of
