BACKGROUND: Oculogyric crisis and other acute dystonic reactions have been reported as a rare adverse effect of aripiprazole, a third-generation antidopaminergic medication used for the treatment of multiple neuropsychiatric conditions, including psychotic disorders, affective disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and neurodevelopmental disorders. CASE DESCRIPTION: We document two cases (two females aged 16 and 22 years) diagnosed with a neurodevelopmental tic disorder (Tourette syndrome), who developed oculogyric crisis while taking medium/high-dose aripiprazole 20-30 mg daily as a first-

Schizophrenia is a complex psychotic disorder characterized by positive symptoms, such as hallucinations and delusions, and negative symptoms, including emotional withdrawal and apathy. Its profound impact on an individual's functioning requires meticulous and sustained management, typically through the use of antipsychotic medications. While these treatments aim to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life, long-term therapy often necessitates careful balancing to mitigate potential side effects. As a result, ongoing monitoring and personalized care are essential for effective management

Ekbom's syndrome (ES), also referred to as delusional parasitosis, is a psychiatric disorder that is relatively uncommon. It is characterized by a robust and unwavering belief in infestation despite the absence of predominant hallucinations or formal thought disorders. Ekbom syndrome presents in 2 main forms: primary, marked by delusions and abnormal tactile sensations; and secondary, where symptoms arise due to another underlying organic condition. In primary ES, the therapeutic approach primarily relies on antipsychotic (AP) medications. This article presents a case with primary ES showing t

INTRODUCTION: Meige syndrome is a segmental form of dystonia where botulinum toxins are the preferred treatment option. However, its invasive nature, treatment costs, partial responsiveness, and benefit duration are some of their limitations.
METHODS: Six consecutive subjects with Meige syndrome were treated only with aripiprazole.
RESULTS: A dramatic response was obtained in all subjects during the first weeks of treatment. Aripiprazole mean ± SD daily dose was 7.9 ± 3.6 mg. Three subjects developed parkinsonism related to aripiprazole treatment; the former improved after reducing the dosag

Hiccups are sudden, repeated, and involuntary contractions of the diaphragm muscle (myoclonic contraction). It involves a reflex arc that, once activated, causes a strong contraction of the diaphragm immediately followed by the closure of the glottis translating into the classic "hic" sound. Hiccups can be short, persistent, and intractable depending on the duration. The most disabling hiccups often represent the epiphenomenon of a medical condition such as gastrointestinal and cardiovascular disorders; central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities; ear, nose, and throat (ENT) conditions or pneum

The binding of drugs to plasma protein is frequently altered in certain types of renal diseases. We recently reported on the effects of oxidation and uremic toxins on the binding of aripiprazole (ARP) to human serum albumin. In our continuing investigations, we examined the binding of ARP to plasma pooled from patients with chronic renal dysfunction. We examined the issue of the molecular basis for which factors affect the changes in drug binding that accompany renal failure. The study was based on the statistical relationships between ARP albumin binding and biochemical parameters such as the

BACKGROUND: Cataplexy is a clinical entity that is characterized by transient muscle tone loss that mostly occurring as a part of narcolepsy. On the other hand, isolated cataplexy (IC) (hereditary cataplexy) is defined as loss of muscle tone that is not accompanied by narcolepsy. Emotional reactions may trigger IC episodes. Additionally, human leukocyte antigen (HLA) DQB1 alleles were shown to be related to IC. Various antidepressants are useful in the treatment of IC; however, there is limited knowledge on the use of antipsychotics in the treatment of IC.

Aripiprazole, a dopamine partial agonist, is a second-generation anti-psychotic that is widely used for the treatment of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. A group of psychiatric experts in Hong Kong developed a set of consensus statements, aiming to facilitate the understanding of clinical properties and usages of aripiprazole among local physicians. Of note, because aripiprazole long-acting injectable has been available locally not long before the establishment of the consensus panel, which limited the discussion on its use in the local context, the consensus statements were focuse

Amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea, galactorrhoea, gynecomastia, infertility, and sexual dysfunction may arise as a consequence of hyperprolactinemia. Hyperprolactinemia is one of major side effects of treatment with antipsychotics, but aripiprazole is known as a dopamine stabilizer antipsychotic which can be used to improve hyperprolactinemia. In this report, it was described that an adolescent patient experienced amenorrhea after adding very low dose aripiprazole to ongoing fluoxetine treatment regime for major depressive disorder. Additionally, this case showed that the patient recovered from the a

Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic that acts as a partial agonist at dopamine D2 receptors. Compared to other atypical antipsychotics, aripiprazole has less metabolic side effects and is less likely to increase prolactin. Moreover, it has been shown to have a unique prolactin lowering effect. While aripiprazole has been associated with subnormal prolactin levels in children, no documented cases of hypoprolactinemia in adults exist thus far. Here we report a case of aripiprazole-induced hypoprolactinemia in an adult male with first-episode psychosis, and the possible effects of abnormall

The atypical antipsychotic agents are felt by many to have a lower risk of inducing the development of dyskinetic movements than the conventional antipsychotic agents agents such as haloperidol and fluphenazine. However, that does not mean that treatment with the atypical antipsychotic agents carries no risk of developing dyskinesias. To the contrary, all of the atypical antipsychotic agents, including aripiprazole, have been associated with the induction of dyskinetic movements. We will present the case of a patient who developed a covert dyskinesia that manifested shortly after the discontin

OBJECTIVE: Aripiprazole is an atypical neuroleptic with agonistic and antagonistic dopaminergic and serotonergic effects. Because preliminary data obtained from uncontrolled studies suggest that aripiprazole may be effective in the treatment of tics, we performed a retrospective study with a large group of patients with Tourette syndrome.
METHODS: One hundred patients (78 men and 22 women; mean ± SD age, 27.1 years (± 11.5) years) who had been treated with daily doses of 5 to 45 mg (mean, 17.0 ± 9.6 mg) aripiprazole at our specialized Tourette syndrome outpatient clinic were included. Ninety-

BACKGROUND: Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic with a pharmacological and clinical profile distinct from other atypical antipsychotics.
SCOPE: A European multidisciplinary advisory panel of university-based experts in bipolar disorders convened in April 2010 to review new clinical guidelines for the management of mania and the role of aripiprazole in its treatment. This report describes the consensus reached on how best to use aripiprazole in the treatment of mania.
FINDINGS: Current guidelines recommending aripiprazole for first-line treatment of mania have not generally translated t

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by absurd, recurrent thoughts (obsessions) followed by certain stereotyped actions (compulsions). 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) abnormalities may be involved in OCD, and further, cause changes in serotonergic transmission that may have direct or indirect effects on the neuronal firing of other neuromodulators affecting thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Serotonin-related genes that are found in OCD include those coding for the 5-HT transporter (5-HTT) and receptors (5-HT(2A), 5-HT(2B), 5-HT(2C) and 5-HT(1B)) as well the 5-HT enzyme tryptophan hy

OBJECTIVE: We report a case-series of seven patients with a medical history of at least two years of tic disorder treated with the partial dopamine agonist aripiprazole to illustrate its efficacy as a treatment alternative for motor and vocal tics in children and adolescents.
METHOD: A case series of five patients with Tourette Syndrome (TS) and two with chronic motor tic disorder (age range 8; 7-18; 1 year), the majority of whom had been refractory to treatment with other neuroleptics or had ceased treatment due to intolerable side effects, were treated for eight weeks with aripiprazole. Dopamine receptor partial agonists have been proposed as potential candidate agents to treat psycho-stimulant abuse. Aripiprazole is a dopamine D2/D3 receptor partial agonist that is currently used as an antipsychotic drug in clinical settings. This study aimed to examine whether aripiprazole can suppress the methamphetamine-induced locomotor response in mice that is used as an indicator for potential clinical use. In ICR mice pre-exposed to methamphetamine (1mg/kg subcutaneous injection once daily for 7 days), we found that mice receiving repetitive treatments with aripiprazole (1, 5, and 10m

Aripiprazole is a second-generation antipsychotic with a unique pharmacologic receptor profile that has efficacy in the treatment and prevention of mania in bipolar I disorder. This article reviews the evidence supporting treatment of adults with bipolar I disorder using aripiprazole as monotherapy or adjunctively during acute mania and its utility as an intramuscular agent for agitation in manic patients. Results from one of the longest bipolar maintenance trials which support aripiprazole as a prophylactic mood stabilizer, specifically against manic relapses, will be discussed as well as a p
