Influence of host biological features on macroparasites of the two European anglerfish species, Lophius piscatorius and Lophius budegassa, off north and northwest Spain.

Two anglerfish species, Lophius piscatorius and Lophius budegassa, caught off the north and northwest coast of Spain in 2007, were examined for parasite infections. Four parasite taxa were chosen for study, i.e., Anisakis larvae Type I (sensu Berland, 1961), Hysterothylacium rigidum (Nematoda), Spraguea lophii (Microsporidia), and Chondracanthus lophii (Copepoda). Prevalence, intensity, and abundance were determined and related to host size and sex. The abundance of Anisakis larvae Type I significantly increased with size in both anglerfish species, and C. lophii was also more abundant in larg

Improved method for recovering ascarid and other helminth eggs from soil associated with epizootics and during survey studies.

Two noncentrifugal and 5 centrifugal flotation methods for the recovery of infective Baylisascaris procyonis eggs from contaminated soil were evaluated after an epizootic of fatal cerebrospinal nematodiasis in bobwhites. All involved the use of inexpensive, readily available materials and routine procedures. In all but 1 of the methods, sizes of the soil samples were 30 g; in 1 centrifugal method, the sample size was 1 g. The centrifugal methods included various combinations of (i) anionic detergent (Tween) pretreatment of the soil, (ii) 3 X washing of the sediment, (iii) NaNO3 or ZnSO4 flotat

First Report of Resistance to Ivermectin in Parascaris univalens in Iceland.

Horses in Iceland have been isolated for more than 1,000 yr but still harbor a similar range of gastrointestinal parasites as do horses across the world. The long isolation of the horses and their parasites presumably means that no resistance genes have been introduced into the Parascaris spp. population. It is therefore of particular interest to investigate the efficacy of ivermectin on Parascaris spp. infecting Icelandic foals. Potential treatment failure of ivermectin in Iceland will add substantial new information on how resistance can arise independently. This study aimed to determine the

Annual and spatial variability in endo- and ectoparasite infections of North Sea cod (Gadus morhua Linnaeus, 1758) larvae, post-larvae and juveniles.

A parasitological investigation was performed on a total of 5380 Atlantic cod larvae, post-larvae and small juveniles sampled from the North Sea during a period of five years. The copepod Caligus elongatus (Von Nordmann, 1832) and the nematode Hysterothylacium aduncum (Rudolphi, 1802) were found at a relatively high prevalence of infection (4.6% and 5.2%, respectively). The infection by both parasites showed annual and spatial variability. C. elongatus showed a higher prevalence in 1992 compared to the following years, whereas the prevalence of H. aduncum increased from 1992 to 2001.We observe

Evaluation of a molecular beacon real-time PCR assay for detection of Baylisascaris procyonis in different soil types and water samples.

Baylisascaris procyonis is a helminth parasite commonly found in North American raccoons (Procyon lotor) that is a cause of clinical neural, ocular, and visceral larva migrans in humans when infective eggs are ingested. Rapid detection of B. procyonis eggs in contaminated soil and water would assist public health analysts in evaluating risks associated with public exposure to areas of known raccoon activity. In this study, a molecular beacon probe-based real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was developed to enable rapid and specific detection of eggs of Baylisascaris spp. The molecul

Natural transfer of helminths of marine origin to freshwater fishes with observations on the development of Diphyllobothrium alascense.

Infective stages of helminths of 5 species that occur as adults in marine mammals were found in burbot, Lota lota (L.) (Gadidae), from the lower Kuskokwim River (southwestern Alaska): Diphyllobothrium alascense Rausch et Williamson, 1958; Pyramicocephalus phocarum (Fabricius, 1780); Corynosoma strumosum (Rudolphi, 1801); Corynosoma semerme (Forsell, 1904); and Pseudoterranova decipiens (Krabbe, 1878). Some larval stages were obtained also from smelt, Osmerus mordax dentex Steindachner, an anadromous fish important as prey of burbot. Burbot, which are freshwater fish, could become paratenic hos

Anisakiasis caused by herring in vinegar: a little known medical problem.

Six cases of intestinal anisakiasis, or herring worm disease, diagnosed over a two year period in a Belgian gastroenterology unit are described. They presented mainly as intestinal obstructions and larvae of this marine nematode were found in the intestinal wall of two of the four patients who were operated on. In two other patients awareness of the diagnosis permitted conservative treatment and spontaneous healing. In five patients symptoms developed after they had eaten herring marinated in vinegar, a hitherto little known source of the herring worm disease.

New Contracaecum species (Nematoda, Anisakidae) parasitizing Ardea cocoi Linnaeus (Aves, Ardeidae) in a mixed infection: morphological and molecular studies in Argentina.

This study provides the description of a new species of Anisakidae, Contracaecum cocoi sp. nov., as well as the record of Contracaecum jorgei, both species parasitizing the Cocoi heron Ardea cocoi (Ardeidae) in a locality from the Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. An integrative taxonomic approach was used, involving phylogenetic analyses and the examination of diagnostic morphological features in the studied specimens. Among other features, the new species can be morphologically distinguished by the papillae arrangement on the male tail: while C. jorgei exhibits a simple morphotype A, C. coco

Evaluation of the immunoprotective effects of eight recombinant proteins from Baylisascaris schroederi in mice model.

BACKGROUND: Baylisascaris schroederi is the most common and harmful intestinal parasitic nematode of giant pandas, causing ascariasis. Although drug deworming is the main measure to control ascariasis in captive giant pandas, prolonged and repeated use of deworming drugs might induce resistance in nematodes and drug residues in giant pandas. Therefore, developing a safe and effective vaccine might provide a novel strategy to prevent ascariasis in captive giant pandas. METHODS: Four highly expressed secretome genes encoding excretory and secretory proteins of B. schroederi, including transthyr

First report of fatal baylisascariasis-induced acute pancreatitis in a giant panda.

A wild adult male giant panda that was rescued from a nature reserve in Sichuan Province, China, has died. The panda had been in poor physical condition: it was wheezing and had increased serum amylase. A pathological examination was performed in order to determine the cause of death. Gross examination revealed 1380 mL of yellowish fluid in the abdominal cavity, 356 nematodes in the digestive tract and one filling the pancreatic duct, contractions and variably-sized dark purple areas in the spleen, a collapsed right lung and consolidation of the left lung. Acute pancreatitis was confirmed hist

Morphological and molecular characterization of Seuratascaris numidica (Seurat, 1917) (Ascaridida: Ascarididae).

Seuratascaris numidica (Seurat, 1917) is a specialized nematode species parasitizing amphibians only. In the present study, the detailed morphology of this poorly known species was studied using light and scanning electron microscopy based on the newly material collected from Hoplobatrachus chinensis (Osbeck) (Amphibia: Anura) in China. We found that the relative length of intestinal caecum in our male specimens (representing 68.4-71.1% of oesophageal length) is slighter longer than the previously reported data (not over 60.0% of oesophageal length). Our SEM observations also revealed the pres

Comparative parasitism of the fish Plagioscion squamosissimus in native and invaded river basins.

Biological invasions are considered a major threat to biodiversity around the world, but the role of parasites in this process is still little investigated. Here, we compared parasite infections of a host species in the areas where it originated and where it was introduced, and in native and introduced species in the same environment, using the endoparasites of the fish Plagioscion squamosissimus (Sciaenidae) in 3 Brazilian basins. Samples were taken in 2 rivers where the species is native, i.e., Solimões River (SO) and Tocantins River (TO), and where the species was introduced, the upper Para

Recombinant antigen-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for diagnosis of Baylisascaris procyonis larva migrans.

Baylisascaris larva migrans is an important zoonotic disease caused by Baylisascaris procyonis, the raccoon roundworm, and is being increasingly considered in the differential diagnosis of eosinophilic meningoencephalitis in children and young adults. Although a B. procyonis excretory-secretory (BPES) antigen-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and a Western blot assay are useful in the immunodiagnosis of this infection, cross-reactivity remains a major problem. Recently, a recombinant B. procyonis antigen, BpRAG1, was reported for use in the development of improved serological ass

Helminths of the black bear, Ursus americanus, in New Brunswick.

Between May 1989 and October 1991, 544 black bears Ursus americanus were collected in New Brunswick and examined for Trichinella spiralis larvae. In addition, 110 of these bears were examined for filarial nematodes, and the entire intestinal tracts of 12 bears were examined for intestinal helminths. Four species of helminths were identified from these bears, including Trichinella spiralis, Dirofilaria ursi, Baylisascaris transfuga, and Taenia krabbei. This represents the first documentation of T. spiralis in Maritime Canada and extends eastward the range of T. krabbei.

Studies on the etiologic mechanism of anisakiasis. --1. Immunological reactions of digestive tract induced by Anisakis larva.

In an attempt to determine the etiological mechanism of anisakiasis, immunological studies were performed using guinea pigs and rabbits. In order to carry out these examinations, we used a specific antigen, hemoglobin of Anisakis larva. We demonstrate that the etiological mechanism of anisakiasis involves anaphylactic reaction as well as Arthus reaction in the digestive tract. Cell-mediated immune reaction also have to consider the relation of establishment of allergic condition in experimental anisakiasis. These results suggest that the three types allergic reaction may play the main role in

Spatio-temporal analysis of genetic diversity in the sibling species Contracaecum osculatum sp. B: a tool for monitoring trophic-web dynamics in Arctic Sea waters.

Global changes in the marine Arctic ecosystem affecting the demography of fish and seal populations may also alter their anisakid parasite populations size, potentially leading to genetic erosion in gene pools. Contracaecum osculatum sp. B, an Arctic member of the C. osculatum (s.l.) species complex, parasitizes Arctic and sub-Arctic seals and fish. This study aimed to compare parasite genetic diversity across the Nordic Seas over time, using historical specimens (1985-1986) and contemporary ones (2021-2022) obtained from seals and fish of the same regions. Parasites were first identified by s

Detection of zoonotic nematodes in brown trout, Salmo trutta, an introduced popular edible freshwater fish in Australia.

Introduced freshwater fish species in Australia, such as brown trout (Salmo trutta), are commonly consumed and play a significant role in recreational fisheries. However, little is known about their potential to act as carriers of zoonotic parasites. This study investigated the presence of zoonotic nematodes in brown trout collected from above and below Winburndale Dam in New South Wales, Australia. Large nematodes were observed in the musculature during visual inspection. Additional nematodes were recovered following overnight incubation of the fish tissue and the gastrointestinal tract. Morp
