Human muscle sympathetic neural and haemodynamic responses to tilt following spaceflight.

Orthostatic intolerance is common when astronauts return to Earth: after brief spaceflight, up to two-thirds are unable to remain standing for 10 min. Previous research suggests that susceptible individuals are unable to increase their systemic vascular resistance and plasma noradrenaline concentrations above pre-flight upright levels. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that adaptation to the microgravity of space impairs sympathetic neural responses to upright posture on Earth. We studied six astronauts approximately 72 and 23 days before and on landing day after the 16 day Neurolab spac

The search for the ultimate exercise countermeasure to preserve crew health and ensure mission success in long-duration spaceflight.

The current understanding of crew health maintenance is founded upon decades of physiological research conducted in terrestrial spaceflight analogues and in low Earth orbit, particularly on the International Space Station. However, as we progress towards the Lunar Gateway and interplanetary missions, it is imperative that the tools employed to maintain crew health are redefined, including the utilisation of exercise countermeasures. The successful implementation of exercise countermeasures for deep space missions must address a number of challenges, including those posed by new environments wi

Carbon Dioxide as a Multisystem Threat in Long Duration Spaceflight.

Elevated partial pressure of carbon dioxide (Pco2) poses a persistent health challenge during spaceflight. Unlike Earth's environment, the International Space Station experiences Pco2 levels that often exceed terrestrial safety thresholds, creating unique physiological risks for astronauts. In microgravity, localized Pco2 "pockets" can form due to lack of convection, exacerbating hypercapnic symptoms such as headaches, visual disturbances, and cognitive impairments. Moreover, microgravity-induced cephalad fluid shifts amplify the impact of CO2-mediated cerebral vasodilation, contributing to el

Muscle stiffness indicating mission crew health in space.

Muscle function is compromised by gravitational unloading in space affecting overall musculoskeletal health. Astronauts perform daily exercise programmes to mitigate these effects but knowing which muscles to target would optimise effectiveness. Accurate inflight assessment to inform exercise programmes is critical due to lack of technologies suitable for spaceflight. Changes in mechanical properties indicate muscle health status and can be measured rapidly and non-invasively using novel technology. A hand-held MyotonPRO device enabled monitoring of muscle health for the first time in spacefli

Selecting Medical Conditions Relevant to Exploration Spaceflight to Create the IMPACT 1.0 Medical Condition List.

INTRODUCTION: Medical conditions occurring in spaceflight pose risks to the crew and the mission and these risks will be exacerbated during exploration-class missions. Probabilistic risk assessment is a method used at NASA to quantify this risk for low-Earth orbit operations. Informing Mission Planning via Analysis of Complex Tradespaces (IMPACT) is a next-generation tool suite that will perform these assessments for exploration-class missions. It will require a robust list of medical conditions of significant likelihood and/or consequence to exploration-class missions to accurately inform the

The Effects of Long Duration Spaceflight on Sensorimotor Control and Cognition.

Astronauts returning from spaceflight typically show transient declines in mobility and balance. Other sensorimotor behaviors and cognitive function have not been investigated as much. Here, we tested whether spaceflight affects performance on various sensorimotor and cognitive tasks during and after missions to the International Space Station (ISS). We obtained mobility (Functional Mobility Test), balance (Sensory Organization Test-5), bimanual coordination (bimanual Purdue Pegboard), cognitive-motor dual-tasking and various other cognitive measures (Digit Symbol Substitution Test, Cube Rotat

Uncertainties in radiation effect predictions for the natural radiation environments of space.

Future manned missions beyond low earth orbit require accurate predictions of the risk to astronauts and to critical systems from exposure to ionizing radiation. For low-level exposures, the hazards are dominated by rare single-event phenomena where individual cosmic-ray particles or spallation reactions result in potentially catastrophic changes in critical components. Examples might be a biological lesion leading to cancer in an astronaut or a memory upset leading to an undesired rocket firing. The risks of such events appears to depend on the amount of energy deposited within critical sensi

Etiological factors in space motion sickness.

We compared susceptibility to motion sickness during exposure to sudden-stop stimulation as a function of gravitoinertial force level. Our findings show that susceptibility is greatly enhanced, both with eyes-closed and eyes-open, for zero-g and 2-g conditions in parabolic flight compared with 1-g test conditions. The change in susceptibility is likely related to three factors: alterations in vestibulo-ocular function which result from variations in gravitoinertial force level (28,29); the altered pattern of otolithic activity resulting during variations in gravitoinertial force level; and the

Noninvasive Brain Stimulation & Space Exploration: Opportunities and Challenges.

As NASA prepares for longer space missions aiming for the Moon and Mars, astronauts' health and performance are becoming a central concern due to the threats associated with galactic cosmic radiation, unnatural gravity fields, and life in extreme environments. In space, the human brain undergoes functional and structural changes related to fluid shift and changes in intracranial pressure. Behavioral abnormalities, such as cognitive deficits, sleep disruption, and visuomotor difficulties, as well as psychological effects, are also an issue. We discuss opportunities and challenges of noninvasive

AIM: Astronauts return to Earth with reduced red cell masses and hypovolaemia. Not surprisingly, when they stand, their heart rates may speed inordinately, their blood pressures may fall, and some may experience frank syncope. We studied autonomic function in six male astronauts (average +/- SEM age: 40 +/- 2 years) before, during, and after the 16-day Neurolab space shuttle mission. METHOD: We recorded electrocardiograms, finger photoplethysmographic arterial pressures, respiration, peroneal nerve muscle sympathetic activity, plasma noradrenaline and noradrenaline kinetics, and cardiac outpu

Immune responses and latent herpesvirus reactivation in spaceflight.

BACKGROUND: Increased frequency and severity of herpesvirus infections are common in individuals with impaired cellular immunity, a phenomenon observed in both the elderly and astronauts alike. This study investigated immune responses and latent herpesvirus reactivation during a 9-d spaceflight. In addition, adrenocortical and immune responses of an elderly astronaut (payload specialist-2, PS2; age 77) who flew on this mission were compared with that of younger crewmembers. HYPOTHESIS: Spaceflight and associated stresses will decrease cellular immunity and reactivate latent herpesviruses. ME

Longitudinal metabolomics profiles reveal increased gut microbial protein fermentation during Spaceflight.

Microgravity is a condition that may affect gastrointestinal function and metabolism during spaceflight. Despite attempts to keep normal dietary habits at the ISS, the food selection and meal timing may also be perturbed during the confinement. To understand the impact of spaceflight on human metabolism, we characterized the plasma metabolome of astronauts (n = 52) before, during, and after missions on board the International Space Station (ISS) using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Here we show that spaceflight affected around 40 circulating compounds. In this longitudin

Impact of Microgravity on Cytoskeletal Dynamics, Protein Transport, and Signaling Networks: Potential Therapeutic Opportunities for Skin Health.

Astronauts encounter several challenges on spaceflight missions, including space radiation and microgravity. Over the past several decades, studies conducted in the field of space medicine have uncovered broad impacts on human physiology, including the integumentary system, which serves as a protective barrier to environmental factors. Dermatological alterations in astronauts are commonly observed during spaceflight missions. Advancing our understanding of the intracellular mechanisms impacted in skin within the context of microgravity may uncover potential therapies for maintaining and improv

Postspaceflight orthostatic hypotension occurs mostly in women and is predicted by low vascular resistance.

About 20% of astronauts suffer postspaceflight presyncope. We studied pre- to postflight (5- to 16-day missions) cardiovascular responses to standing in 35 astronauts to determine differences between 1) men and women and 2) presyncopal and nonpresyncopal groups. The groups were presyncopal women, presyncopal men, and nonpresyncopal men based on their ability to stand for 10 min postflight. Preflight, women and presyncopal men had low vascular resistance, with the women having the lowest. Postflight, women experienced higher rates of presyncope (100 vs. 20%; P = 0.001) and greater losses of pla

Translating genetic findings to epigenetics: identifying the mechanisms associated with aging after high-radiation exposure on earth and in space.

PURPOSE: Exposure to radiation is a health concern within and beyond the Earth's atmosphere for aircrew and astronauts in their respective austere environments. The biological effects of radiation exposure from a multiomics standpoint are relatively unexplored and stand to shed light on tailored monitoring and treatment for those in these career fields. To establish a reference variable for genetic damage, biological age seems to be closely associated with the effect of radiation. Following a genetic-based study, this study explores the epigenetic landscape of radiation exposure along with its

Women in space: A review of known physiological adaptations and health perspectives.

Exposure to the spaceflight environment causes adaptations in most human physiological systems, many of which are thought to affect women differently from men. Since only 11.5% of astronauts worldwide have been female, these issues are largely understudied. The physiological nuances affecting the female body in the spaceflight environment remain inadequately defined since the last thorough published review on the subject. A PubMed literature search yielded over 2200 publications. Using NASA's 2014 review series 'The effects of sex and gender on adaptation to space' as a benchmark, we identifie

Anemia and Spaceflight Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome (SANS).

Spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) is a collection of distinct findings seen in some astronauts following prolonged spaceflight and is characterized by: optic disc edema, globe flattening, and choroidal folds. In this manuscript, we describe the potential mechanisms linking anemia and SANS. Future research aimed at understanding the relationship between these conditions may help to develop countermeasures and mitigation efforts for SANS.

Probabilistic Risk Assessment of Prophylactic Surgery Before Extended-Duration Spaceflight.

Introduction. Prophylactic surgery before spaceflight may eliminate the risk of appendicitis and cholecystitis in astronauts on deep space missions. However, even minimally invasive surgery increases the risk of small bowel obstruction (SBO). Probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) is a method that can be used to estimate the benefits and risks of prophylactic surgery. Methods. Risks of appendicitis and cholecystitis during a 2.5-year Mars mission are compared to the risk of SBO after laparoscopic removal of the appendix, gallbladder, or both. A PRA model using Monte Carlo methodology was used to
