The current study used the self-fitting algorithm to allow listeners to self-adjust hearing-aid gain or compression parameters to select gain for speech understanding in a variety of quiet and noise conditions. Thirty listeners with mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss adjusted gain parameters in quiet and in several types of noise. Outcomes from self-adjusted gain and audiologist-fit gain indicated consistent within-subject performance but a great deal of between-subject variability. Gain selection did not strongly affect intelligibility within the range of signal-to-noise ratios teste

Universal newborn hearing screening will increase the number of very young children requiring care from an otolaryngologist. Although the otolaryngologist is the perceived expert in managing hearing loss, he or she must collaborate with a team of specialists to provide comprehensive treatment for the newly diagnosed child and its family. Working within a team that includes a pediatrician, audiologist, otolaryngologist, speech pathologist, teachers, and care coordinators allows each professional to contribute significantly to the well-being of the child and parents. Group cooperation and parent

This paper discusses the peripheral and central visual and tactile pathways with respect to the diminishing integrity of the ageing nervous system. This discussion is based upon extant data derived from investigators in vision and vibrotactile sensation. The purpose in examining these investigations is to ascertain the problems associated with the use of vision and vibrotactile stimulation in the auditory rehabilitation of older people. Speed of processing and simultaneous use of pathways are factors to be considered carefully in order not to contribute to perceptual confusions. The writers hy

Hemifacial microsomia is evidenced by the clinical spectrum of microtia, mandibular deformities, and middle ear malformations. This constellation of defects suggests that the most efficacious treatment will be multidisciplinary management, which includes the otolaryngologist, audiologist, plastic surgeon, and temporal bone radiologist. In the past, microtia--the most clinically apparent malformation--usually has been studied and treated with respect to the area of special interest of the investigator, whether from an otologic, reconstructive, or radiologic perspective. Newer management, howeve

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly being explored for clinical decision support, but their performance in audiology has not been systematically benchmarked using clinically grounded case materials and rubric-based safety evaluations.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and evaluate AUDIOLOGYBENCH, a 3-tier benchmark for characterizing frontier LLM capability in clinical audiology along (1) curated domain knowledge, (2) literature-derived evidence, and (3) clinical reasoning under multimodal case input, with an explicit human audit of the automated adjudicator on the

Nowadays, several options are available to treat patients with conductive or mixed hearing loss. Whenever surgical intervention is not possible or contra-indicated, and amplification by a conventional hearing device (e.g., behind-the-ear device) is not feasible, then implantable hearing devices are an indispensable next option. Implantable bone-conduction devices and middle-ear implants have advantages but also limitations concerning complexity/invasiveness of the surgery, medical complications, and effectiveness. To counsel the patient, the clinician should have a good overview of the options

BACKGROUND: Electrical stimulation of the cochlea to treat tinnitus has been explored for decades. However, few studies have investigated the most salient programming parameters for tinnitus suppression in cochlear implant (CI) patients.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to review the available CI programming parameters for tinnitus suppression and to consider possible clinical research designs for selecting the optimal programming parameters for CI patients.
RESULTS: Across research studies, the optimal parameters vary significantly and are often based on data fromonly a fewparticipant

This case report describes the audiologic and medical diagnostic evaluations, results, and treatment options in a patient with a classic presentation of immune-mediated sensorineural hearing loss, commonly called autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED). It reviews findings of the basic battery, immittance audiometry, transient otoacoustic emissions, and auditory brainstem response measures and medical findings over more than 2 years. AIED generally causes asymmetric bilateral sensorineural hearing loss with atypical configuration. Although hearing loss is generally fluctuant, the overall pattern i

Audiologists and ENT registrars examined 2,036 children aged 10 years or younger by means of pure-tone audiometry, tympanometry and otoscopic examinations. Twenty per cent of these children had ear pathology and 7.5% had impaired hearing. Forty-three pus swabs taken from patients with suppurative otitis media most often cultured Proteus mirabilis and Pseudomonas species. The prevalence of otitis media with effusion was twice as high in white children as in black children, resulting in a much higher prevalence of hearing loss in the first group. The black children had 7 times more dry perforati

Three electrophysiologic audiologic procedures-aural immittance measurement, auditory brainstem response (ABR), and otoacoustic emissions (OAE)- were first described in the 1970's. Immittance measurement and ABR have contributed importantly for years to the assessment of auditory function in children and adults, whereas OAEs have not yet been incorporated into the everyday audiology test battery. In this article, we argue that the transition from OAE measurement by hearing scientists in laboratory settings to routine application by audiologists in the clinic will be greatly facilitated by (1)

In this chapter, I address the topic of tinnitus in the context of the patient's trajectory of care, with special attention to psychological comorbidities. Although most patients will cope with tinnitus and need no more than information and reassurance from professionals, a proportion of patients will need more supportive management. Assessment of psychological comorbidities is important to determine how urgent they should be seen in the clinic and their specific needs. The most frequent complaints are stress, depression, and anxiety. Although the direction of this relationship is still unclea

People with an acquired hearing loss often have difficulty adjusting to a first hearing aid. Studies have shown that audiological counselling can facilitate adjustment to a first hearing aid. Because of its interactive nature, the internet could be a valuable tool to gain information about the experiences of the new hearing aid user and to address the needs for audiological counselling. An internet-based audiological counselling programme in the form of daily e-mails during the first month after the hearing aid fitting was offered to three new hearing aid users. The data, qualitative in nature

The neurofibromatoses with two subclasses known as NF1 and NF2 are two genetically distinct, autosomal dominantly inherited conditions with significant ramifications in the human auditory system. NF1 is a multisystem progressive disorder that can frequently involve portions of the auditory system in diverse and subtle ways and in which no characteristic audiologic findings can be discerned. NF2 is characterized by the presence of bilateral vestibular schwannomas, sometimes associated with multiple intracranial and spinal tumors. In 43 children with NF1, significant auditory system involvement

The importance of early identification of hearing impairment is well documented. The Joint Committee on Infant Hearing 1982 Position Statement established the goal of identification and habilitation of hearing-impaired infants by age 6 months but did not specify the procedure for initial audiologic screening. In these guidelines, ASHA specifies the recommended procedure for audiologic screening of infants at risk for hearing impairment that includes a) parent/caregiver education; b) audiologic screening by ABR; and c) referral to a comprehensive evaluation, follow-up, and management system for

Goldenhar syndrome is a rare congenital disorder that affects the development of the craniofacial region, spine, and ears. It is characterized by a wide range of symptoms that can vary in severity and may include facial asymmetry, microtia or anotia, cleft lip or palate, vertebral anomalies, and eye abnormalities. Although the cause of Goldenhar syndrome is not fully understood, it is thought to be related to disruptions in the early embryonic development of the affected tissues. The diagnosis is typically made based on physical examination and imaging studies, and management may involve a mul

A total of 1,109 Indian children in five British Columbia communities were surveyed for middle ear disease. Evaluation included a history, pure screening, impedance audiometry, and otolaryngological examination. Of these, 12.7 per cent had middle ear disease requiring treatment, namely serous otitis media, perforated tympanic membrane, or cholesteatoma. Serous otitis media was the commonest disease and it was most prevalent in the 0-4 years age group. Pure tone audiometry and impedance audiometry were both unsatisfactory screening methods in this study. The tests could not be performed in the

OBJECTIVES: The International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) Core Sets for Hearing Loss (CSHL) consists of short lists of categories from the entire ICF classification that are thought to be the most relevant for describing the functioning of persons with hearing loss. A comprehensive intake that covers all factors included in the ICF CSHL holds the promise of developing a tailored treatment plan that fully complements the patient's needs. The Comprehensive CSHL contains 117 categories and serves as a guide for multiprofessional, comprehensive assessment. The Brief
