Implementing Dementia-Friendly Videos in Everyday Care: A Qualitative Study of Frontline Staff Experiences.

Dementia-friendly videos are adapted audiovisual resources designed to support care for people living with moderate to severe dementia. Although evidence suggests these videos can enhance comfort, engagement, and communication, little is known about how frontline healthcare providers integrate them into everyday practice. This qualitative implementation study examined the barriers and facilitators experienced by frontline healthcare providers when implementing dementia-friendly videos in real-world clinical environments. The videos were introduced over an 18-month period in two contrasting car

Impact of verbal explanation and modified consent materials on orthodontic informed consent.

INTRODUCTION: Comprehension of informed consent information has been problematic. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the effectiveness of a shortened explanation of an established consent method and whether customized slide shows improve the understanding of the risks and limitations of orthodontic treatment. METHODS: Slide shows for each of the 80 subject-parent pairs included the most common core elements, up to 4 patient-specific custom elements, and other general elements. Group A heard a presentation of the treatment plan and the informed consent. Group B did not hear the presen

Hearing deficits in young adults who had a history of otitis media in childhood: use of personal stereos had no effect on hearing.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis proposed in a recent French study that a history of recurrent otitis media (OM) in childhood increases susceptibility to hearing loss from frequent exposure to a personal stereo (PS) during development to early adulthood. METHODS: A subcohort of 358 young adults selected from a historic cohort study, all 18 years old and with a well-documented OM history (secretory and acute), provided data on the sound level and length of exposure to PSs. Four contrasting groups were formed: those with the highest or lowest PS exposure combined with a positive or negative hi

A Scoping Review of Audiovisual Integration Methodology: Screening for Auditory and Visual Impairment in Younger and Older Adults.

With the rise of the aging population, many scientists studying multisensory integration have turned toward understanding how this process may change with age. This scoping review was conducted to understand and describe the scope and rigor with which researchers studying audiovisual sensory integration screen for hearing and vision impairment. A structured search in three licensed databases (Scopus, PubMed, and PsychInfo) using the key concepts of multisensory integration, audiovisual modality, and aging revealed 2,462 articles, which were screened for inclusion by two reviewers. Articles wer

A continuing educational initiative to develop nurses' mental health knowledge and skills in rural and remote areas.

At a time of ever increasing mental health problems in Australian society, the nursing profession is beset by problems of an insufficient workforce specialising in this area. Not only is there a shortage of suitable trained specialist mental health nurses, but undergraduate nursing programs inadequately prepare students for practical mental health nursing. Fewer students are enrolling in mental health nursing, and many nurses are leaving the workforce. A particular problem in rural Australia is that there is a lack of specialist mental health services, and nurses are being increasingly relied

Client education levels and the effectiveness of node-link maps.

The primary purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of mapping-enhanced counseling with less educated methadone clients (i.e., clients with no high school diploma or GED). Results indicated that less educated clients exposed to node-link maps during treatment showed better 12-month follow-up outcomes than similar clients exposed to standard methods of counseling. Less educated mapping clients were less likely than their standard counterparts to have used drugs and to have engaged in criminal activities in the 6 months before the follow-up interview.

Assessment of Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices of Indian Subpopulation on Third Molar Impaction, Etiology, and Management: A Questionnaire-Based Study.

Introduction Third molars are the most commonly impacted teeth in the oral cavity. Misconceptions among the general population regarding the complications associated with their removal have resulted in an aversion toward surgical extraction. To understand the current mindset among Indians, we aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) of the Indian subpopulation toward third molar impactions, their associated complications, and management. Materials and methods A total of 716 participants from the outpatient department of a dental college completed a structured questionnaire-

Applying a knowledge-to-action framework for primary prevention of spina bifida in tropical Africa.

Maternal periconceptual folate supplementation reduces the incidence of neural tube defects; however, in settings where population-level food fortification is not available, it is not clear how best to promote this prevention strategy. Guided by a knowledge-to-action methodology, we used mixed quantitative and qualitative methods to define the local disease burden, then designed, implemented and evaluated a culturally tailored educational intervention in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where resource limitations and threats to human security contribute to restricted capacity for the prev

Using video discharge instructions as an adjunct to standard written instructions improved caregivers' understanding of their child's emergency department visit, plan, and follow-up: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies demonstrate that patients often have difficulty understanding their discharge instructions. Video discharge instructions have the potential to mitigate factors such as illiteracy and limited physician time, which may affect comprehension. Our goal is to determine if adding video discharge instructions affects caregivers' understanding of their child's emergency department (ED) visit, plan, and follow-up. METHODS: Caregivers of patients, aged 29 days to 18 years, with a diagnosis of fever, vomiting or diarrhea, and wheezing or asthma were randomized into written or
