Hearing Loss Perceptions in Patients With Subjective Asymmetry: Analysis and Implications.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of self-reported hearing asymmetry in predicting objectively defined asymmetric hearing loss (AHL) and identify patient factors associated with over- or underestimation of individual ear hearing loss severity. METHOD: A cross-sectional survey analysis of consecutive adult patients undergoing audiometric evaluation was conducted at the audiology and otology/neurotology clinics of a single tertiary referral center from 2020 to 2025. Fifty patients reporting hearing asymmetry who had not undergone prior audiometric testing within 5 year

A Cross-Sectional Audiometric Analysis of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in Military Aviators.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to establish a quantitative relationship between the occurrence of certain auditory impairments in Chinese military pilots and their flight hours. The investigation will determine whether the prevalence of left-ear vulnerability necessitates the implementation of cockpit noise control measures. METHODS: Cross-sectional pure-tone audiometry (0.125-8 kHz) was performed in 155 active-duty aviators with an average time of 2241 h in 2024. Hearing loss (HL) was defined as pure tone average (4, 6, 8 kHz) ≥25 dB. Asymmetry was tested with paired t-tests.

The association of auditory function measures with low-level methylmercury from oceanic fish consumption and mercury vapor from amalgam: The Seychelles Child Development Study Nutrition 1 Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Some authors have reported that low-level exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) adversely impacts measures of auditory function. These reports, however, are not consistent in their findings. Consequently, we examined auditory function in a population exposed to low-level methylmercury (MeHg) exposure from fish consumption and to mercury vapor (Hg0) from dental amalgams. We analyzed their associations with the participants hearing acuity, absolute and interwave ABR latencies, and otoacoustic emissions (distortion product/DPOAE and click evoked/CEOAE). DESIGN: We administered an audiomet

[New hearing test for functional deafness--the procedure to estimate the genuine hearing threshold].

This report describes a new procedure for examining functional deafness with binaural sound stimulation. This new hearing test can estimate the genuine pure tone hearing threshold quantitatively at every frequency by using the ordinary audiometer. In the case of the nonorganic deafness, even if the hearing disorders are bilateral or hemilateral, we believe that measuring auditory threshold separately, causes the deterioration of the threshold. Therefore, this procedure is designed so that the subject may not be aware of testing the auditory acuity of each ear, and utilizes the response of the

[Assessment of hearing function within the sensorial domain of intrinsic capacity in the age of 60-74 years.].

The auditory function is one of the components of an eldery person's intrinsic capacity - a set of functional abilities that determine healthy aging. The aim of the study was to assess hearing function as a component of the sensory domain of intrinsic capacity and to determine reference ranges of otological parameters for the age of 60-74 years. In 2023, a cross-sectional study was conducted in Arkhangelsk using a random population sample (n=605). The examination included an assessment of hearing acuity through whisper speech (WS) perception, otoscopy, collection of data on otological history

Event-Related Potentials as Markers of Age-Related Changes of Spatial Hearing in Normal-Hearing Adults.

Previous studies have shown that older adults can witness a decline in the integration of their spatial auditory cues even when they don't present pathological audiometric thresholds. Nonetheless, when spatial hearing in aging is discussed, most of the focus concerns elderly individuals with hearing impairments or presbycusis, rather than those with clinically normal hearing. In fact, auditory aging (even without presbycusis) may still result in a decline in spatial sensitivity, potentially contributing to the deterioration of key binaural functions crucial for speech understanding, such as bi

The relationship between sustained hamstring pain and reorganisation of somatosensory representations: a randomised, controlled study.

Recurrent hamstring injuries are highly prevalent amongst sporting populations. It has been hypothesised that pain from an initial hamstring injury may induce reorganisation of somatosensory representations that could contribute to reinjury. However, because of the cross-sectional nature of existing research, it remains unknown whether somatosensory changes are a cause or effect of pain or if they are driven by other potentially confounding factors. Here, we explored the effect of experimentally induced sustained hamstring pain on tasks that interrogate somatosensory and spatial representation

Distributed abnormalities of brain white matter architecture in patients with dominant optic atrophy and OPA1 mutations.

Using advanced MRI techniques, we investigated the presence and topographical distribution of brain grey matter (GM) and white matter (WM) alterations in dominant optic atrophy (DOA) patients with genetically proven OPA1 mutation as well as their correlation with clinical and neuro-ophthalmologic findings. Nineteen DOA patients underwent neurological, neuro-ophthalmologic and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) evaluations. Voxel-wise methods were applied to assess regional GM and WM abnormalities in patients compared to 20 healthy controls. Visual acuity was reduced in 16 patients. Si

[Clinical features, risk factors and progresses on treatment of recurrent Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease].

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease(VKH) is a bilateral, granulomatous panuveitis associated with central nervous system, auditory, and integumentary manifestations. Clinically, VKH usually responds well to early aggressive glucocorticosteroid treatment and may be cured without any clinically significant sequelae. Some patients, however, may enter the chronic recurrent phase, which may result in marked loss of vision due to complications such as complicated cataract, secondary glaucoma and maculopathy. Recurrent VKH is mainly characterized by anterior uveitis associated with thickening of the choroid

Muckle-Wells cryopyrinopathy: complex phenotyping and response to therapy in a new multiplex kindred.

Muckle-Wells syndrome (MWS) is a member of the cryopyrin-associated periodic syndrome family of auto-inflammatory diseases, originally described as a triad of urticaria, sensorineural deafness and amyloidosis. IL-1 blockade is a proven therapy for MWS. The clinical, laboratory and genotypic characteristics of a novel kindred of five individuals with Muckle-Wells syndrome are described. Response to IL-1 blockade therapy in the proband was evaluated. All five affected family members experienced symptoms of multi-organ inflammation. Lead time between symptom onset and diagnosis was approximately

[Understanding the Relationship Between Hearing and Cognition to Improve Neuropsychological Assessment in Adults Aged 45 Years and Older: A Population-Based Study].

Age-related cognitive changes occur alongside sensory changes, including presbycusis, which notably affects speech understanding in noisy environments. Although typically diagnosed after the age of 60, hearing difficulties may begin insidiously as early as midlife. Given the well-established association between sensorineural hearing loss and cognitive functioning, we aimed to investigate 1) the associations between hearing abilities and cognitive performance in adults aged 45 years and older from the general population; and 2) the cognitive profile of middle-aged adults (45-65 years) with impa

Cochlear Implantation Via Extended Endaural Incision in a Patient With Congenital Ear Malformation.

INTRODUCTION: In our previous report, we described a surgical technique for cochlear implantation in canal wall down (CWD) ears. Specifically, this involved extending the endaural incision superiorly, harvesting a large temporal fascia flap, completely removing the tympanic epithelium, inserting the electrode array, obliterating the middle ear cavity with the temporal fascia flap, and sealing the external auditory canal with a tragal cartilage plug. This report details the safe application of this technique in a patient with severe ear malformation and suspected CHARGE syndrome, supplemented w
