Children with dyslexia show a reduced processing benefit from bimodal speech information compared to their typically developing peers.

During information processing, individuals benefit from bimodally presented input, as has been demonstrated for speech perception (i.e., printed letters and speech sounds) or the perception of emotional expressions (i.e., facial expression and voice tuning). While typically developing individuals show this bimodal benefit, school children with dyslexia do not. Currently, it is unknown whether the bimodal processing deficit in dyslexia also occurs for visual-auditory speech processing that is independent of reading and spelling acquisition (i.e., no letter-sound knowledge is required). Here, we

Basic auditory processing and its relationship with symptoms in patients with schizophrenia: A systematic review.

Processing of basic auditory features, one of the earliest stages of auditory perception, has been the focus of considerable investigations in schizophrenia. Although numerous studies have shown abnormalities in pitch perception in schizophrenia, other basic auditory features such as intensity, duration, and sound localization have been less explored. Additionally, the relationship between basic auditory features and symptom severity shows inconsistent results, preventing concrete conclusions. Our aim was to present a comprehensive overview of basic auditory processing in schizophrenia and its

Probing the Link Between Perception and Oscillations: Lessons from Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation.

Brain oscillations are regarded as important for perception as they open and close time windows for neural spiking to enable the effective communication within and across brain regions. In the past, studies on perception primarily relied on the use of electrophysiological techniques for probing a correlative link between brain oscillations and perception. The emergence of noninvasive brain stimulation techniques such as transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) provides the possibility to study the causal contribution of specific oscillatory frequencies to perception. Here, we review

Results of speech perception and speech production training for three prelingually deaf patients using a multiple-electrode cochlear implant.

Five studies were conducted to measure changes in the perception and production of selected speech targets, with training, in three prelingually deaf patients. The two adults and one adolescent were implanted with the Cochlear (Nucleus) multiple-electrode prosthesis. The studies were perception and production of nasal consonants; perception of syllable-final consonants; perception and production of alveolar consonants; auditory-visual perception of alveolar consonants; and perception and production of vowels. Perceptual data were collected in the audition (implant)-alone condition, except for

Hearing safety of long-term treatment with theta burst stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for the experimental treatment of tinnitus or auditory hallucinations aims at a modulation of cortical activity in areas of auditory perception and processing. Continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) is a patterned rTMS paradigm with lower stimulation intensity and shorter stimulus duration that is increasingly used for the optimization of rTMS-treatment paradigms. Possible interference with physiological brain function and the noise emitted by the rTMS device might induce relevant unwanted impairment of hearing and speech perce

Abnormal auditory neural activity in individuals with spinal muscular atrophy.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by hypotonia, progressive muscle weakness and atrophy caused by progressive loss of motor neurons in the spinal cord and lower cranial nerve nuclei. The disease has also been associated with sensory neuropathies affecting the visual, somatosensory and auditory pathways. This case-control study investigated auditory neural function and perceptual ability in children and young adults with SMA. Twenty individuals with genetically confirmed SMA of varying severity (Types 1-3) participated. Sixteen children/young adults

[Partial acoustic agnosia as a cause of stammering. Possibilities and limits of diagnostic testing methods].

An essential precondition for normal speech development is an intact peripheral and central hearing capacity. Disturbances of auditory perception can be the cause of speech defects. There are many methods to examine sound discriminating capacity. Most of them are statistically not verified or standardized. We developed a testing method which consists of 44 figured word pairs. We suggest how to differentiate between children with impaired auditory perception from children without this disturbance. Visual perception and visuomotor function were examined by the Marianne Frostig Developmental Test

Exploring the McGurk Effect in Cochlear-Implant Users: A Systematic Review.

Speech perception is a neurocognitive process that involves both auditory and visual modalities to interpret the meaning of spoken utterances. The cohesive integration of visual and auditory information (AV integration) improves speech perception. AV integration can also occur even when incongruent auditory and visual information is presented, known as the McGurk effect. The McGurk phenomenon signifies the importance of visual articulatory cues (such as place of articulation) and auditory information for speech perception. The McGurk effect can be decreased or absent in the deaf population eve

Associations of Cognitive Expectancies With Auditory Hallucinations and Hallucinatory-Like Experiences in Patients With Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Various neurocognitive models explore perceptual distortions and hallucinations in schizophrenia and the general population. A variant of predictive coding account suggests that strong priors, like cognitive expectancy, may influence perception. This study examines if stronger cognitive expectancies result in more auditory false percepts in clinical and healthy control groups, investigates group differences, and explores the association between false percepts and hallucinations. STUDY DESIGN: Patients diagnosed with schizophrenia with current auditory hallucinations (n = 51) and w

Cortical representation of pitch perception in mice.

Pitch perception is fundamental to speech and music, yet the neural representation of pitch in auditory cortex remains poorly understood. We hypothesized that mice rely on temporal cues for pitch perception because of their wide auditory filters and high-frequency hearing. To investigate, we developed a mouse auditory filter bank model that estimates the temporal pitch salience of complex tones. We then trained mice to discriminate low vs. high fundamental frequencies (F0s) in complex tones and found that modeled temporal pitch salience was highly correlated with behavioral discrimination sens

Complexin-1 enhances ultrasound neurotransmission in the mammalian auditory pathway.

Unlike megabats, which rely on well-developed vision, microbats use ultrasonic echolocation to navigate and locate prey. To study ultrasound perception, here we compared the auditory cortices of microbats and megabats by constructing reference genomes and single-nucleus atlases for four species. We found that parvalbumin (PV)+ neurons exhibited evident cross-species differences and could respond to ultrasound signals, whereas their silencing severely affected ultrasound perception in the mouse auditory cortex. Moreover, megabat PV+ neurons expressed low levels of complexins (CPLX1-CPLX4), whic

Remediation of Perceptual Deficits in Progressive Auditory Neuropathy: A Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Auditory neuropathy (AN) is a hearing disorder that affects neural activity in the VIIIth cranial nerve and central auditory pathways. Progressive forms have been reported in a number of neurodegenerative diseases and may occur as a result of both the deafferentiation and desynchronisation of neuronal processes. The purpose of this study was to describe changes in auditory function over time in a patient with axonal neuropathy and to explore the effect of auditory intervention. METHODS: We tracked auditory function in a child with progressive AN associated with Charcot-Marie-Tooth

The Resting State Central Auditory Network: a Potential Marker of HIV-Related Central Nervous System Alterations.

OBJECTIVE: HIV positive (HIV+) individuals with otherwise normal hearing ability show central auditory processing deficits as evidenced by worse performance in speech-in-noise perception compared with HIV negative (HIV-) controls. HIV infection and treatment are also associated with lower neurocognitive screening test scores, suggesting underlying central nervous system damage. To determine how central auditory processing deficits in HIV+ individuals relate to brain alterations in the cortex involved with auditory processing, we compared auditory network (AN) functional connectivity between HI

Reward Enhances Online Participants' Engagement With a Demanding Auditory Task.

Online recruitment platforms are increasingly used for experimental research. Crowdsourcing is associated with numerous benefits but also notable constraints, including lack of control over participants' environment and engagement. In the context of auditory experiments, these limitations may be particularly detrimental to threshold-based tasks that require effortful listening. Here, we ask whether incorporating a performance-based monetary bonus improves speech reception performance of online participants. In two experiments, participants performed an adaptive matrix-type speech-in-noise task

Neural Correlates of Modality-Sensitive Deviance Detection in the Audiovisual Oddball Paradigm.

The McGurk effect, an incongruent pairing of visual /ga/-acoustic /ba/, creates a fusion illusion /da/ and is the cornerstone of research in audiovisual speech perception. Combination illusions occur given reversal of the input modalities-auditory /ga/-visual /ba/, and percept /bga/. A robust literature shows that fusion illusions in an oddball paradigm evoke a mismatch negativity (MMN) in the auditory cortex, in absence of changes to acoustic stimuli. We compared fusion and combination illusions in a passive oddball paradigm to further examine the influence of visual and auditory aspects of i

Attentional modulation of neural sound tracking in children with and without dyslexia.

Auditory selective attention forms an important foundation of children's learning by enabling the prioritisation and encoding of relevant stimuli. It may also influence reading development, which relies on metalinguistic skills including the awareness of the sound structure of spoken language. Reports of attentional impairments and speech perception difficulties in noisy environments in dyslexic readers are also suggestive of the putative contribution of auditory attention to reading development. To date, it is unclear whether non-speech selective attention and its underlying neural mechanisms

A study of auditory localization mechanism based on thought experiments.

The focus of this study is auditory localization. Based on wave mechanics and structural mechanics, we analyze the sound field encircling external ear and the function of the soft tissues in middle ear respectively. And then, with the help of two rules, some details of the generation of spatial hearing are revealed. For auditory direction perception, three semicircular canals work as the reference coordinate system, and the cues are the direction of the concentrated force acting on tympanic membrane and the synchronous stress state. For the distance perception, because the distance information

Processing of auditory feedback in perisylvian and insular cortex.

When we speak, we not only make movements with our mouth, lips, and tongue, but we also hear the sound of our own voice. Thus, speech production in the brain involves not only controlling the movements we make, but also auditory and sensory feedback. Auditory responses are typically suppressed during speech production compared to perception, but how this manifests across space and time is unclear. Here we recorded intracranial EEG in seventeen pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients with medication-resistant epilepsy who performed a reading/listening task to investigate how other auditory re

Auditory pathway encoding and neural plasticity in children with learning problems.

An inability to process auditory information, especially speech, characterizes many children with learning and attention problems. Our working hypothesis is that these speech-sound perception problems arise, at least in some cases, from faulty representation of the speech signal in central auditory centers. Preconscious neurophysiologic representation of sound structure by central auditory pathway neurons can be reflected by subcortical and cortical aggregate neural responses. These neurophysiologic responses can be modified by perceptual learning. Our research has shown that some children wit
