Temporary noise-induced underwater hearing loss in an aquatic turtle (Trachemys scripta elegans).

Noise pollution in aquatic environments can cause hearing loss in noise-exposed animals. We investigated whether exposure to continuous underwater white noise (50-1000 Hz) affects the auditory sensitivity of an aquatic turtle Trachemys scripta elegans (red-eared slider) across 16 noise conditions of differing durations and amplitudes. Sound exposure levels (SELs) ranged between 155 and 193 dB re 1 μPa2 s, and auditory sensitivity was measured at 400 Hz using auditory evoked potential methods. Comparing control and post-exposure thresholds revealed temporary threshold shifts (TTS) in all three

Salicylate decreases the spontaneous firing rate of guinea pig auditory nerve fibres.

Tinnitus has similarities to chronic neuropathic pain where there are changes in the firing rate of different types of afferent neurons. We postulated that one possible cause of tinnitus is a change in the distribution of spontaneous firing rates in at least one type of afferent auditory nerve fibre in anaesthetised guinea pigs. In control animals there was a bimodal distribution of spontaneous rates, but the position of the second mode was different depending upon whether the fibres responded best to high (> 4 kHz) or low (≤4 kHz) frequency tonal stimulation. The simplest and most reliable wa

Age-related changes in the auditory evoked brainstem potentials of albino and pigmented guinea pigs.

The auditory evoked brainstem responses of guniea pigs in two age groups were recorded and examined for evidence of age-dependent changes at peripheral stations in the auditory pathway. Because pigmented guinea pigs have been found to be less sensitive to sounds than albinos, both groups were included in this study. Old and young animals did not differ in response latency or in the conduction times associated with the individual potentials. By contrast, the amplitudes of the brainstem responses to high-frequency stimuli were distinctly reduced in old guinea pigs, with no difference in the dyna

Auditory Quality-of-Life Measures in Patients With Traumatic Brain Injury and Normal Pure Tone Audiometry.

Auditory complaints are commonly reported following traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, few studies have examined patient-reported auditory symptomatology and quality-of-life metrics in individuals with TBI. We hypothesize that following TBI, individuals can experience auditory symptoms even with hearing thresholds in the normal range. Adult patients with normal auditory thresholds and a history of TBI were evaluated for subjective hearing loss, tinnitus, aural fullness, hyperacusis, and autophony. Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory, and Hyperacusis Questionn

Auditory processing disorders: relationship to cognitive processes and underlying auditory neural integrity.

BACKGROUND: Auditory processing disorder (APD) in children has been reported and discussed in the clinical and research literature for many years yet there remains poor agreement on diagnostic criteria, the relationship between APD and cognitive skills, and the importance of assessing underlying neural integrity. PURPOSE: The present study used a repeated measures design to examine the relationship between a clinical APD diagnosis achieved with behavioral tests used in many clinics, cognitive abilities measured with standardized tests of intelligence, academic achievement, language, phonology

[Presbyacusis].

Presbyacusis is senescence in the auditory system. Currently, the etiology of presbyacusis is thought to be mainly due to environmental noise and arterial sclerosis. Cumulative effects of social noise influence the auditory function gradually. Sclerotic change of arteries in the brain occurs along the total auditory pathway. Histopathological findings reveal characteristic changes in all parts of the auditory pathway in elderly persons. Alterations include thickening of the ear drum, sclerotic change of the ossicles joint, decreasing number of hair cells, degeneration of the eighth nerve and o

Threshold changes of ABR results in toddlers and children.

INTRODUCTION: Auditory brainstem response (ABR) is a clinically established method to identify the hearing threshold in young children and is regularly performed after hearing screening has failed. Some studies have shown that, after the first diagnosis of hearing impairment in ABR, further development takes place in a spectrum between progression of hearing loss and, surprisingly, hearing improvement. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate changes over time of auditory thresholds measured by ABR among young children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: For this retrospective study, 459 auditory

Intraoperative determination of coupling efficiency of Carina® middle ear implant by means of auditory evoked potentials.

OBJECTIVE: The Carina® implant system is a fully implantable active middle ear implant, which can be coupled to various structures in the middle ear, depending on the nature of the hearing loss and the middle ear anatomy. Currently, there is only one method for determining the coupling efficiency of the actuator of this implant system, and this is limited to incus coupling. DESIGN: The proposed method is based on the intraoperative recording and evaluation of auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) while directly stimulating the hearing system via the actuator. The acoustic stimulation was achiev

Integrated In-Ear Device for Auditory Health Assessment.

Clinical assessment of the human auditory system is an integral part of evaluating the health of a patient's cognitive processes. Conventional tests performed by audiologists include the Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR) and the Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR), both of which present an audio stimulus to the patient in order to elicit a change in brain state measurable by electroencephalography (EEG) techniques. Spatial monitoring of the electrophysiological activity in the auditory cortex, temporal cortex, and brain stem during auditory stimulus evaluation can be used to pinpoint to loca

The effects of reverberant blast waves on the auditory system.

Chinchillas were exposed to 1, 10, or 100 reverberant impulses at 150, 155, or 160 dB peak SPL. The impulses were generated by one of two different shock tubes, each producing blast waves having a different spectral composition, with one emphasizing low frequencies (< 0.5 kHz) and the other midfrequencies (2-4 kHz). Impulses were presented at the rate of one per minute. This parametric paradigm yielded 18 exposure conditions with 15 animals/condition. Hearing thresholds were measured using auditory-evoked potentials and the sensory epithelium was evaluated with the surface preparation. In gene

Impact noise: the importance of level, duration, and repetition rate.

The applicability of the equal energy hypothesis (EEH) to impact noise exposures was studied using chinchillas. Hearing thresholds were estimated by recording the evoked potentials from a chronic electrode implanted in the inferior colliculus. The animals were exposed to broadband impacts of 200-ms duration. The study was carried out in two parts. In experiment I, six exposure levels (107, 113, 119, 125, 131, and 137 dB SPL) and three repetition rates (4/s, 1/s and 1/4s) were employed. In the second experiment, the total duration of the exposure as well as the total energy were kept constant b

Age-Related Deficits in Binaural Hearing: Contribution of Peripheral and Central Effects.

Pure-tone audiograms often poorly predict elderly humans' ability to communicate in everyday complex acoustic scenes. Binaural processing is crucial for discriminating sound sources in such complex acoustic scenes. The compromised perception of communication signals presented above hearing threshold has been linked to both peripheral and central age-related changes in the auditory system. Investigating young and old Mongolian gerbils of both sexes, an established model for human hearing, we demonstrate age-related supra-threshold deficits in binaural hearing using behavioral, electrophysiologi

Cochlear morphology in relation to loss of behavioural, electrophysiological, and middle ear reflex thresholds after exposure to noise.

Loss of auditory function was correlated with different pathological findings in the inner ear of the rabbit after 15 or 30 min exposure to high level broad band (2-7 kHz) noise. The ears from animals with post-exposure times ranging from 1 to 23 months were analysed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Complete cochleograms with quantification of loss of hair cells and damage to stereocilia were produced. Loss of function was defined by determining behavioural threshold, threshold of auditory brainstem response (ABR) to narrow-band stimuli and threshold of the middle ear muscle reflex (MER)

Using Thresholds in Noise to Identify Hidden Hearing Loss in Humans.

OBJECTIVES: Recent animal studies suggest that noise-induced synaptopathy may underlie a phenomenon that has been labeled hidden hearing loss (HHL). Noise exposure preferentially damages low spontaneous-rate auditory nerve fibers, which are involved in the processing of moderate- to high-level sounds and are more resistant to masking by background noise. Therefore, the effect of synaptopathy may be more evident in suprathreshold measures of auditory function, especially in the presence of background noise. The purpose of this study was to develop a statistical model for estimating HHL in human

Factors that influence the benefit from amplification in the elderly.

Many factors have been proposed as potential determinants of the benefit that an individual receives from wearing a hearing aid. In this study, to quantify their relative importance, 54 individuals with symmetrical sensorineural hearing impairment were presented with and without simulated hearing aid characteristics on two measures of disability that were based on identifying words in sentences. Benefit was defined as the difference between the percentage of correct scores with and without the aid characteristics switched into the audio circuit. The factors investigated were age, various perip

Characterizing subcutaneous cortical auditory evoked potentials in mice.

Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABRs) are a reliably robust measure of auditory thresholds in the mammalian hearing system and can be used to determine deficits in the auditory periphery. However, because these measures are limited to the lower stages of the auditory pathway, they are insensitive to changes or deficits that occur in the thalamic and cortical regions. Cortical Auditory Evoked Potentials (CAEPs), as longer latency responses, capture information from these regions. However they are less frequently used as a diagnostic tool, particularly in rodent models, due to their inherent varia

Noise-induced and age-related hearing loss:  new perspectives and potential therapies.

The classic view of sensorineural hearing loss has been that the primary damage targets are hair cells and that auditory nerve loss is typically secondary to hair cell degeneration. Recent work has challenged that view. In noise-induced hearing loss, exposures causing only reversible threshold shifts (and no hair cell loss) nevertheless cause permanent loss of >50% of the synaptic connections between hair cells and the auditory nerve. Similarly, in age-related hearing loss, degeneration of cochlear synapses precedes both hair cell loss and threshold elevation. This primary neural degeneration

Electrophysiological Evidence for the Sources of the Masking Level Difference.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this review article is to review evidence from auditory evoked potential studies to describe the contributions of the auditory brainstem and cortex to the generation of the masking level difference (MLD). METHOD: A literature review was performed, focusing on the auditory brainstem, middle, and late latency responses used in protocols similar to those used to generate the behavioral MLD. RESULTS: Temporal coding of the signals necessary for generating the MLD occurs in the auditory periphery and brainstem. Brainstem disorders up to wave III of the auditory brainstem r

A predicted humpback whale hearing curve based on modified behavioral observation audiometry data.

Despite decades of research, little capability exists to reliably predict the impact of ocean noise on marine mammals.1 Noise impact predictions require knowing the frequencies marine mammals can hear and their sensitivity to those sounds (e.g., the hearing threshold, or the susceptibility to noise-induced hearing loss). For odontocetes and pinnipeds, these are well documented using behavioral methods, where the animal is trained to respond to an audible signal,2 or auditory evoked potential (AEP) methods, where the neural response of the brain is measured.2 Both the hearing range and sensitiv
