The antibiotic susceptibility of pneumococci isolated from clinical specimens from 1991 through 1994 was investigated. Of 305 strains tested by the agar dilution method, 16 (5.2%) were resistant to penicillin (MICs > or = 0.12 mg/l). Of the resistant strains, 0.3% showed high-level resistance (MIC > or = 2 mg/l). The rate of resistance to erythromycin (MIC > or = 4 mg/l) was 2.3%, to tetracycline (MIC > or = 8 mg/l) 8.5%, to chloramphenicol (MIC > or = 8 mg/l) 1.0%, and to trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole (MIC > or = 3.2/64 mg/l) 3.3%. In an 8 month period, 20 cases of listeriosis among neonates were seen in the Federal District of Upper Austria. The majority of mothers reported influenza-like symptoms at the end of pregnancy. 19 cases were early-onset-infections, 6 infants developed meningitis. Serotype 1/2a was isolated in 7 cases. West Nile virus (WNV) is becoming more widespread and markedly effecting public health. We sequenced the complete polyprotein gene of a divergent WNV strain newly detected in a pool of Uranotaenia unguiculata mosquitoes in Austria. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that the new strain constitutes a ninth WNV lineage or a sublineage of WNV lineage 4.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy and delivery outcomes in women with Fabry disease are not well described.
METHODS: Retrospective cohort-study of women with Fabry disease in Austria using a specific questionnaire and the Austrian Mother-Child Health Passport.

A cohort of the first 50 COVID-19 patients in East Tyrol, a region in the southwest of Austria, were monitored in home quarantine. Specific viral ribonucleic acid was detected in throat swabs and stool samples. Analysis indicated a median virus shedding duration of 13 days; however, statistical outliers highlight the importance of consequent testing. From a pool of 147 reliable recommendations, ten experts from the Austrian Society of General Practice and Family Medicine selected 21 relevant recommendations as the basis for the Delphi process. We report the successful management of a patient with severe respiratory failure due to COVID-19 admitted to an intensive care unit complicated by secondary catheter-related infection of Candida glabrata. We are discussing some of the clinical challenges and the pitfalls in molecular diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2, including the fact that a positive PCR result may not always reflect infectiousness.

OBJECTIVES: Although substantial progress in the treatment of stable angina pectoris (sAP) has been made, little is known about the functional status and quality of life (QoL) of patients in different healthcare systems.
DESIGN AND METHODS: We undertook a survey using the Seattle Angina Questionnaire (SAQ) (five domains scored form 0-worst assessment to 100-best assessment) to assess symptoms, QoL (including limitation of activities), demographics, geographic distribution and individual disease data in patients with stable coronary artery disease in Austrian cardiology practices.
