ARMOR: Pareto-Aware Dynamic Routing for Energy-Efficient Heterogeneous Multimodal Perception in Autonomous Driving.

Modern autonomous driving systems are constrained by the tension between high-fidelity perception and stringent onboard energy conservation. We propose adaptive routing of multimodal onboard reasoning (ARMOR), an end-to-end heterogeneous mixture-of-experts framework that dynamically routes inputs between computationally efficient pure-vision experts and robust radar-vision fusion experts. A lightweight context-aware gating network, the multimodal adaptive routing sentinel (MARS), integrates temporal context and environmental priors to select appropriate experts. ARMOR was optimized using a uni

Evaluation of adaptive sampling methods in scenario generation for virtual safety impact assessment of pre-crash safety systems.

INTRODUCTION: Virtual safety assessment plays a vital role in evaluating the safety impact of pre-crash safety systems such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and automated driving systems (ADS). However, as the number of parameters in simulation-based scenario generation increases, the number of crash scenarios to simulate grows exponentially, making complete enumeration computationally infeasible. Efficient sampling methods, such as importance sampling and active sampling, have been proposed to address this challenge. However, a comprehensive evaluation of how domain knowledge, str

[Research on a dynamic evolution model of driving fatigue-induced musculoskeletal disorders risk].

Objective: To analyze the temporal changes of pressure distribution at the driver's buttock-thigh interface during prolonged driving, and to construct a dynamic progression model of driving fatigue-induced musculoskeletal injury risk, thereby provide a theoretical basis for early warning of work related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) . Methods: From September to October 2024, sixteen healthy adult male drivers were recruited to complete a 2-hour simulated driving task. Seat-body interface pressure data were collected using a BodiTrak®array pressure sensing cushion system, divided into seque

Medical conditions affecting physical capabilities and adverse driving outcomes: An evidence and gap map.

INTRODUCTION: Some medical conditions may be associated with increased risks of collision and poor performance while driving. Traffic crashes could result in fatalities and injuries. The Australian national medical guidelines do not provide specific instructions for all medical conditions. Clear and high levels of evidence are needed to guide health practitioners' decision-making processes on medical fitness to drive. OBJECTIVE: An Evidence and Gap Map (EGM) was conducted to synthesize recent evidence on medical conditions and adverse driving outcomes, which aims to identify available evidenc

Visual field requirements for driving across various jurisdictions and their rationale.

An intact visual field is essential for safe driving and therefore is a requirement for driving in many jurisdictions. There is significant variation in the standards applied. Using an online search, guidelines and policy statements were obtained regarding driving vision standards from jurisdictions who used English as an official language and included visual field requirements. Scientific research cited in these documents was reviewed. The evidence base for vision standards was heterogenous with visual field requirements for the horizontal meridian, the vertical meridian and fixation varying

A neuroergonomics approach to driver's cooperation with Lane Departure Warning Systems.

Lane Departure Warning Systems (LDWS) are automation that warn drivers in case of immediate lane departure. While LDWS are associated with increased road safety, little is known about the neural aspects of the cooperation between an LDWS and the driver behind the wheel. The present study addresses this issue by combining fMRI and driving simulation for experienced and novice drivers. The results reveal brain areas activated immediately after warning: it involves areas linked to the alertness network (midbrain, thalamus, anterior cingulate cortex), to motor actions and planning (motor and premo

Potential of auxiliary strobe lights on train locomotives to improve level crossing safety.

Inattentiveness of road users on approach to passive railway crossings represents a major threat to level crossing safety. An auxiliary strobe light system installed on trains in addition to existing headlights may help address this issue by providing an ergonomic way of attracting human attention to the level crossing and to the train. The objective of this paper was to investigate the ergonomics and safety potential of auxiliary strobe light systems. A system was implemented on a real railway vehicle and in the virtual environment of a driving simulator. Acceptance of the system, including i

Working Conditions Influencing Drivers' Safety and Well-Being in the Transportation Industry: "On Board" Program.

The conditions of work for professional drivers can contribute to adverse health and well-being outcomes. Fatigue can result from irregular shift scheduling, stress may arise due to the intense job demands, back pain may be due to prolonged sitting and exposure to vibration, and a poor diet can be attributed to limited time for breaks and rest. This study aimed to identify working conditions and health outcomes in a bussing company by conducting focus groups and key informant interviews to inform a Total Worker Health® organizational intervention. Our thematic analysis identified three primary

Real-time lane detection model based on non bottleneck skip residual connections and attention pyramids.

The security of car driving is of interest due to the growing number of motor vehicles and frequent occurrence of road traffic accidents, and the combination of advanced driving assistance system (ADAS) and vehicle-road cooperation can prevent more than 90% of traffic accidents. Lane detection, as a vital part of ADAS, has poor real-time performance and accuracy in multiple scenarios, such as road damage, light changes, and traffic jams. Moreover, the sparse pixels of lane lines on the road pose a tremendous challenge to the task of lane line detection. In this study, we propose a model that f

The role of off-path glances: A quantitative analysis of rear-end conflicts involving Chinese professional truck drivers as the striking partners.

INTRODUCTION: Rear-end crashes are one of the most frequent crash types in China, leading to significant economic and societal losses. The development of active safety systems - such as Automatic Emergency Braking System (AEBS) - could avoid or mitigate the consequences of these crashes in Chinese traffic situations. However, a clear understanding of the crash causation mechanisms is necessary for the design of these systems. METHOD: Manually coded variables were extracted from a naturalistic driving study conducted with commercial vehicles in Shanghai. Quantitative analyses of rear-end crash

Monitoring driver health status in real time.

Nowadays, surveillance systems have evolved significantly; hence, in order to meet the specific needs of the health sector and to monitor the patients' health conditions, intelligent systems have been proposed. These innovations represent a primordial role in road safety, which reduce the risk of traffic accidents. This paper describes an intelligent system design for remote monitoring (tele-monitoring) of a driver's health condition in real time. The measurement using new hardware and software devices is made possible through the contact between the driver contact and an intelligent steering

Efficacy of augmented visual environments for reducing sickness in autonomous vehicles.

The risk of motion sickness is considerably higher in autonomous vehicles than it is in human-operated vehicles. Their introduction will therefore require systems that mitigate motion sickness. We investigated whether this can be achieved by augmenting the vehicle interior with additional visualizations. Participants were immersed in motion simulations on a moving-base driving simulator, where they were backward-facing passengers of an autonomous vehicle. Using a Head-Mounted Display, they were presented either with a regular view from inside the vehicle, or with augmented views that offered a

Vision screening of older drivers for preventing road traffic injuries and fatalities.

BACKGROUND: Demographic data in North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand suggest a rapid growth in the number of persons over the age of 65 years as the baby boomer generation passes retirement age. As older adults make up an increasing proportion of the population, they are an important consideration when designing future evidence-based traffic safety policies, particularly those that lead to restrictions or cessation of driving. Research has shown that cessation of driving among older drivers can lead to negative emotional consequences such as depression and loss of independenc

Egocentric framing - one way people may fail in a switch dilemma: evidence from excessive lane switching.

To study switching behavior, an experiment mimicking the state of a driver on the road was conducted. In each trial participants were given a chance to switch lanes. Despite the fact that lane switching had no sound rational basis, participants often switched lanes when the speed of driving in their lane on the previous trial was relatively slow. That tendency was discerned even when switching behavior had been sparsely reinforced, and was especially marked in almost a third of the participants, who manifested it consistently. The findings illustrate a type of behavior occurring in various con
