Cutaneous sensory and autonomic denervation in progressive supranuclear palsy.

AIM: Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) is a progressive neurodegenerative tauopathy characterised by motor, behavioural and cognitive dysfunction. While in the last decade, sensory and autonomic disturbances as well as peripheral nerve involvement are well-recognised in Parkinson's Disease (PD), little is known in this regard for PSP. Herein, we aim to assess peripheral sensory and autonomic nerve involvement in PSP and to characterise possible differences in morpho-functional pattern compared to PD patients. METHODS: We studied 27 PSP and 33 PD patients without electrophysiological signs

[Evaluation of autonomic nervous function by assessing baroreceptor reflex].

The autonomic nervous functional tests assessing baroreceptor reflex (BR) were described. I. Head-up tilt test: Sympathetic nervous function is activated and alginine-vasopressin is secreted through the BR. Orthostatic hypotension is induced by BR dysfunction. II. Spectral analysis of heart and blood pressure: High-frequency power in R-R interval variability indicates parasympathetic function and low-frequency power may reflect BR function. Low-frequency power in blood pressure may indicate sympathetic nervous function. However, spectral analysis of them can not detect a sympathetic nervous hy

The autonomic effects of deep brain stimulation--a therapeutic opportunity.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an expanding field in neurosurgery and has already provided important insights into the fundamental mechanisms underlying brain function. One of the most exciting emerging applications of DBS is modulation of blood pressure, respiration and micturition through its effects on the autonomic nervous system. DBS stimulation at various sites in the central autonomic network produces rapid changes in the functioning of specific organs and physiological systems that are distinct from its therapeutic effects on central nervous motor and sensory systems. For example, DBS

Cardiorenal Syndrome: The Role of Neural Connections Between the Heart and the Kidneys.

The maintenance of cardiovascular homeostasis is highly dependent on tightly controlled interactions between the heart and the kidneys. Therefore, it is not surprising that a dysfunction in one organ affects the other. This interlinking relationship is aptly demonstrated in the cardiorenal syndrome. The characteristics of the cardiorenal syndrome state include alterations in neurohumoral drive, autonomic reflexes, and fluid balance. The evidence suggests that several factors contribute to these alterations. These may include peripheral and central nervous system abnormalities. However, accumul

To stand on one's own legs.

A fundamental human expectation is to stand upright. This exposes the cardiovascular system to gravitational forces, with a fall in pressure above heart level exposing organs such as the brain to impaired perfusion if adequate adaptive mechanisms are not activated. The autonomic nervous system plays an important role in the initial response to standing upright, and can be affected by several disorders, some rare, some common. Autonomic failure can result in orthostatic hypotension with hypoperfusion of vital organs, causing a variety of symptoms including syncope. Thus, it is important to reco

Mechanisms underlying the neuronal-based symptoms of allergy.

Persons with allergies present with symptoms that often are the result of alterations in the nervous system. Neuronally based symptoms depend on the organ in which the allergic reaction occurs but can include red itchy eyes, sneezing, nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, coughing, bronchoconstriction, airway mucus secretion, dysphagia, altered gastrointestinal motility, and itchy swollen skin. These symptoms occur because mediators released during an allergic reaction can interact with sensory nerves, change processing in the central nervous system, and alter transmission in sympathetic, parasympathe

Autonomic nerves in myocardial sleeves around caval veins: Potential role in cardiovascular mortality?

BACKGROUND: Quantitative changes in the cardiac autonomic nervous system may play an important role in the pathogenesis of various cardiovascular diseases. In the present morphological analysis, we aimed to study autonomic nerve density in myocardial sleeves and surrounding fibro-fatty tissue around caval veins. We correlated the nerve distribution with cardiovascular mortality and a history of atrial fibrillation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 24 autopsied adult hearts were excised together with the superior and inferior vena cava and grouped according to the immediate and underlying cau

Sympathetic Nerve Traffic Activation in Essential Hypertension and Its Correlates: Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses.

Muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) has shown that sympathetic activation may occur in essential hypertension (EHT). However, the small sample size of the studies, the heterogeneity of the patients examined, and the presence of confounders represented major weaknesses not allowing to draw definite conclusions. Among the 432 studies identified providing information in EHT on MSNA, 63 were eligible (1216 patients) and meta-analyzed grouping them on the basis of clinically relevant questions: (1) Is MSNA increased in hypertension of mild/moderate-to-severe degree? (2) Does sympathetic activa

Insulin-responsive autonomic neurons in rat medulla oblongata.

Low blood glucose activates brainstem adrenergic and cholinergic neurons, driving adrenaline secretion from the adrenal medulla and glucagon release from the pancreas. Despite their roles in maintaining glucose homeostasis, the distributions of insulin-responsive adrenergic and cholinergic neurons in the medulla are unknown. We fasted rats overnight and gave them insulin (10 U/kg i.p.) or saline after 2 weeks of handling. Blood samples were collected before injection and before perfusion at 90 min. We immunoperoxidase-stained transverse sections of perfused medulla to show Fos plus either phen

[Progress of Researches on Relationship between Acu-moxibustion Induced Modulation of Small Intestinal Motility and Autonomic Nervous Activity ].

A large body of evidence of clinical and experimental outcomes showed that acupuncture and moxibustion can effectively treat disorders of small intestinal motility. The present articJe collected related literatures and made an analysis on the correlation between the effect of acupuncture-moxibustion intervention and needle-manipulation techniques, stimulating quantities, acupoint recipes, and the body functional states, as well as the corresponding mechanisms. Results indicate that acupuncture stimulation of acupoints of the limbs mainly enhance the motility of the small intestine, while acupu

Regulation of blood pressure by the arterial baroreflex and autonomic nervous system.

Mean arterial pressure (MAP) is a critical hemodynamic factor. The absence of proper regulation of MAP can have important pathophysiological consequences. Low MAP can cause inadequate blood flow to organs, syncope, and shock. On the other hand, elevated MAP contributes to increased oxygen demand by the heart, ventricular remodeling, vascular injury, end organ damage, and stroke. The arterial baroreflex system is a key controller of MAP and is a complex system. It can be considered in its entirety as an integrative physiological system or in terms of its regulated component parts. Those compone

Progress in pelvic anatomy from the viewpoint of radical prostatectomy.

The procedure of radical prostatectomy has changed rapidly since the introduction of laparoscopic and robotic surgery, which allows for clear, highly magnified visualization. The da Vinci surgical system enables three-dimensional visualization and makes use of instruments with seven degrees of freedom. Since its introduction, the use of robot-assisted radical prostatectomy has spread rapidly worldwide. However, adaptation to changes in surgical techniques using knowledge of classical pelvic anatomy has been difficult. In this report, we reviewed the progress in knowledge of pelvic anatomy, par

Autonomic nerve changes in the mouse pancreas after pancreatic duct ligation.

INTRODUCTION: The mouse pancreas exhibits distinct atrophy of the exocrine tissue following pancreatic duct ligation. AIM: To investigate changes of innervation in the whole pancreas after pancreatic duct ligation. METHODOLOGY: The mouse pancreatic duct was ligated at 6 weeks of age. Pancreatic tissues were removed 7 days and 14 days after the ligation, fixed by perfusion and immersion with Zamboni solution, and embedded in gelatin. The whole organ was serially sectioned at a thickness of 100 microm, histochemically stained for cholinesterase, and observed by light microscopy. The number and

Autonomic nerves terminating on smooth muscle cells of vessels in the pineal organ of various mammals.

The significance of autonomic nerves reaching the pincal organ was already investigated in connection to the innervation of pinealocytes and mediating light information from the retina for periodic melatonin secretion. In earlier works we found that some autonomic nerve fibers are not secretomotor but terminate on arteriolar smooth muscle cells in the pineal organ of the mink (Mustela vison). Studying in serial sections the pineal organ of the mink and 15 other mammalian species in the present work, we investigated whether similar axons of vasomotor-type are generally present in the wall of pi

Vesical dysfunctions after radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer: a critical review.

Functional disorders of the lower urinary tract are the most common long-term complications following radical surgery for cancer of the uterine cervix (8-80%). These disturbances were associated to the partial interruption of the autonomic fibers innervating the bladder during the resection of anterior, lateral and posterior parametrium and vaginal cuff. The pathophysiology of these changes is actually debated. The nature of the surgical damage appears to be a decentralization rather than a complete denervation and bladder dysfunctions may be either the unmasking of intrinsic detrusor activity

Nerve sparing radical hysterectomy: latest developments and historical perspective.

Autonomic nerve damage during surgery is thought to play a crucial role in the aetiology of bladder dysfunction, sexual dysfunction and colorectal motility disorders which are seen in patients after radical hysterectomy. In order to prevent these complications, Japanese gynaecologists introduced a surgical technique with preservation of the pelvic autonomic nerves in the 1960s. In the 1980s the first English paper was published. Since then several surgical approaches have been described, i.e. liposuction, electrical stimulation to locate nerves intra-operatively and laparoscopically assisted t

Vestibular nucleus projections to the parabrachial nucleus in rabbits: implications for vestibular influences on the autonomic nervous system.

Acute vestibular dysfunction and motion sickness are characterized by autonomic effects such as pallor, nausea, and vomiting. Previous anatomic and physiologic studies suggest that one potential mediator of these effects may be light, direct vestibular nuclear projections to the nucleus tractus solitarius and the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve. This study presents evidence for relatively dense, direct projections from the vestibular nuclei to the parabrachial nucleus. Male albino rabbits received injections of Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin into the vestibular nuclei. The tracer w
