Short-Term Exposure to Blue Light Shows an Inhibitory Effect on Axial Elongation in Human Eyes Independent of Defocus.

PURPOSE: Given the potential role of light and its wavelength on ocular growth, we investigated the effect of short-term exposure to the red, green, and blue light on ocular biometry in the presence and absence of lens-induced defocus in humans. METHODS: Twenty-five young adults were exposed to blue (460 nm), green (521 nm), red (623 nm), and white light conditions for 1-hour each on 4 separate experimental sessions conducted on 4 different days. In each light condition, hyperopic defocus (3D) was induced to the right eye with the fellow eye experiencing no defocus. Axial length and choroidal

Ocular rigidity in eyes with experimental myopia.

PURPOSE: To evaluate ocular rigidity in experimentally induced myopic eyes compared to contralateral control eyes in young rhesus monkeys. METHODS: Eight rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were reared with monocular form-deprivation from 24 days to 150 days of age. Refraction, axial length, and intraocular pressure (IOP) were measured biweekly. After 150 days, ocular rigidity was assessed in both eyes via anterior chamber cannulation, in which controlled changes in anterior chamber volume were used to calculate the coefficient of ocular rigidity using Friedenwald's equation. Paired t-tests were

Vitreous collagen cross-linking and maturation and interactions with internal limiting membrane (ILM) collagen may have a potential role in modulating postnatal growth of the eyeball.

At birth, the eye is moderately hypermetropic but achieves emmetropia by the age of 5-6 years in a large majority (Chakraborty et al., 2020; Gwiazda et al., 1993). The process of emmetropization is attributed to changes in several components of the eye structure, predominantly cornea, crystalline lens and axial length. Emmetropization is possible only when there is a fine balance between the optical power of the eye and its focal length. The former is determined by the combined dioptric power of the cornea and crystalline lens and the latter by the axial length of the eyeball. Increase in axia

Meta-analysis of ocular axial length in newborns and infants up to 3 years of age.

In pediatric ophthalmology it is often necessary to obtain axial length in young children. For children older than 3 years, noncontact biometry can be used. For younger children this is usually not an option, and the clinician needs to rely on other imaging modalities. Depicted data curves in textbooks elaborate on few studies and limited number of subjects. The existing literature regarding normal axial length for preterm infants and term newborns is summarized and critically appraised for number of subjects, relevance, measurement method and error, gender and retinopathy of prematurity. Intraocular pressure and axial length in children.

The intraocular pressure and the anteroposterior length of the eye are of great clinical importance for the diagnosis and management, before and after surgery, of congenital glaucoma. It is well-known that normal intraocular pressure in children is different from the normal levels in adults. We performed measurements of intraocular pressure and axial length in 141 children who had been admitted for eye problems other than glaucoma. The intraocular pressures were measured with the Perkins hand-held applanation tonometer at the beginning of general anesthesia. Simultaneously, A-scan ultra-sound

Effect of short-term peripheral myopic defocus on ocular biometrics using Fresnel "press-on" lenses in humans.

This study assessed axial length and choroidal thickness changes following short-term peripheral myopic defocus in normal adult subjects. Twenty subjects underwent defocus sessions by viewing a full-field projected movie 4 m away for 4 h in the morning, while wearing spectacle lenses, corrected for distance vision in both eyes. The right eye, serving as the test eye, was peripherally defocused using a Fresnel lens overlay of + 3.50 D with a central clear aperture of 11.5 mm (correlating to a clear central visual field of approximately 23°), while the left eye served as the control (with no Fre

A shared mechanism in eye optical development: Lens nucleus centralization in Xenopuslaevis.

Developing eye optics, determined by the lens and cornea, must coordinate with the axial length of growing eyes to focus light onto the retina to form an image. It was found that the lens nucleus in zebrafish (Danio rerio)y initially localized anteriorly in the optical axis of larvae, then centralized at older stages. An anteriorly placed lens nucleus is thought to enable a functional optical system in larvae, where eye axial length is short. To determine if a similar mechanism occurs in other aquatic animals, we studied the clawed frog, Xenopus laevis, a fully aquatic species that similarly r
