Acute Impacts of Ionizing Radiation Exposure on the Gastrointestinal Tract and Gut Microbiome in Mice.

Radiation therapy for abdominopelvic malignancies often results in damage to the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and permanent changes in bowel function. An overlooked component of the pathophysiology of radiation-induced bowel injury is the role of the gut microbiome. The goal of this research was to identify the impacts of acute radiation exposure on the GIT and gut microbiome. C57BL/6 mice exposed to whole-body X-rays (0.1-3 Gy) were assessed for histological and microbiome changes 48 h post-radiation exposure. Within the ileum, a dose of 3 Gy significantly decreased crypt depth as well as the

Understanding antimicrobial susceptibility profile of Finegoldia magna: an insight to an untrodden path.

BACKGROUND: Finegoldia magna (formerly known as Peptococcus magnus or Peptostreptococcus magnus) belonging to phylum Firmicutes, class Clostridia and genus Finegoldia, is the only species known to cause infections in human beings. Amongst Gram positive anaerobic cocci, F. magna is known to be the most virulent with a high pathogenic potential. Significant upsurge in antimicrobial resistance among anaerobes has been documented by various studies. F. magna is known to be susceptible to most of the anti-anaerobic antimicrobials, however, multidrug resistant strains are being reported in literatur

Gut Microbiota in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: A Complex Interplay.

The intestinal microbiota represents the microbial community that colonizes the gastrointestinal tract and constitutes the most complex ecosystem present in nature. The main intestinal microbial phyla are Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Fusobacteria, and Verrucromicrobia, with a clear predominance of the two phyla Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes which account for about 90% of the intestinal phyla. Intestinal microbiota alteration, or dysbiosis, has been proven to be involved in the development of various syndromes, such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, Crohn's dise

Lower systemic inflammation is associated with gut firmicutes dominance and reduced liver injury in a novel ambulatory model of parenteral nutrition.

BACKGROUND: Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) provides lifesaving nutritional support to patients unable to maintain regular enteral nutrition (EN). Unfortunately, cholestasis is a significant side effect affecting 20-40% of paediatric patients. While the aetiology of TPN-associated injury remains ill-defined, an altered enterohepatic circulation in the absence of gut luminal nutrient content during TPN results in major gut microbial clonal shifts, resulting in metabolic endotoxemia and systemic inflammation driving liver injury and cholestasis. HYPOTHESIS: To interrogate the role of gut micro

Characterization of biliary microbiota dysbiosis in extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

Extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) accounts for 3% of digestive cancers. The role of biliary microbiota as an environment-related modulator has been scarcely investigated in CCA, and the putative impact of associated diseases has not been yet assessed. We characterized the biliary microbiota in CCA patients in order to identify a specific CCA-related dysbiosis. The biliary effluents were collected through an endoscopic retrograde pancreatic cholangiography (ERCP) examination involving 28 CCA and 47 patients with gallstones, herein considered as controls. The biliary effluents were submitted

Bacteria from the rhizosphere and tissues of As-hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata and their role in arsenic transformation.

Arsenic (As)-resistant bacteria are abundant in the rhizosphere and tissues of As-hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata. However, little is known about their roles in As transformation and As uptake in P. vittata. In this study, the impacts of P. vittata tissue extracts with or without surface sterilization on As transformation in solutions containing 100 μg L-1 AsIII or AsV were investigated. After 48 h incubation, the sterilized and unsterilized root extracts resulted in 45% and 73% oxidation of AsIII, indicating a role of both rhizobacteria and endobacteria. In contrast, AsV reduction was only fo

The Microbiota of the Human Skin.

The aim of this chapter is to sum up important progress in the field of human skin microbiota research that was achieved over the last years. The human skin is one of the largest and most versatile organs of the human body. Owing to its function as a protective interface between the largely sterile interior of the human body and the highly microbially contaminated outer environment, it is densely colonized with a diverse and active microbiota. This skin microbiota is of high importance for human health and well-being. It is implicated in several severe skin diseases and plays a major role in wo

Biochemical and molecular mechanisms of resilience in the response of prokaryotes of an active volcano to cadmium-induced stress.

The crater lake of the active volcano "El Chichón" in Mexico, represents an ecosystem characterized by changing conditions of salinity, acidity, temperature, and the concentration of different heavy metals, posing significant challenges to the abundance and diversity of microorganisms. In this study, anaerobic mesophilic and hyperthermophilic prokaryotic microbiomes isolated from the volcano-lake were evaluated to elucidate the molecular and biochemical mechanisms involved in Cd2+ bioremoval. Cultures consumed actively carbohydrates, triacetylglycerol, acetate and methanol; the hyperthermophil

Management of Finegoldia magna-associated non-puerperal breast abscess in an adolescent: Integration of surgical source control and targeted antimicrobial therapy.

Finegoldia magna is an opportunistic anaerobic pathogen rarely causing non-puerperal breast abscess (NPBA) in adolescents. Its biofilm-forming capacity often complicates standard treatments. We report a 17-year-old female who presented with NPBA following influenza A and the rupture of an epidermal cyst. Anaerobic culture identified F. magna alongside Staphylococcus simulans. Guided by the patient's penicillin allergy and anaerobic resistance trends, systemic cefmetazole was administered. Concurrently, ultrasound-guided mechanical cavity debridement was performed, followed by percutaneous indw

Whey protein and xylitol complex alleviate type 2 diabetes in C57BL/6 mice by regulating the intestinal microbiota.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a metabolic disorder that has become a major threat to public health. Epidemiological and experimental studies have suggested that whey protein isolate (WPI) and xylitol (XY) play an important role on T2D. This manuscript hypothesizes the supplementation of whey protein and xylitol complex (WXY) has the hypoglycemic and hyperlipidemia effect of T2D mice induced by the conjoint action of a high-fat diet and streptozotocin (STZ) by modulating of intestinal microbiota. The mice with diabetes displayed higher levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG), insulin, glycosylated hem

Development of Electrochemical DNA Biosensor for Equine Hindgut Acidosis Detection.

The pH drop in the hindgut of the horse is caused by lactic acid-producing bacteria which are abundant when a horse's feeding regime is excessively carbohydrate rich. This drop in pH below six causes hindgut acidosis and may lead to laminitis. Lactic acid-producing bacteria Streptococcus equinus and Mitsuokella jalaludinii have been found to produce high amounts of L-lactate and D-lactate, respectively. Early detection of increased levels of these bacteria could allow the horse owner to tailor the horse's diet to avoid hindgut acidosis and subsequent laminitis. Therefore, 16s ribosomal ribonuc

Compound probiotics alleviating aflatoxin B1 and zearalenone toxic effects on broiler production performance and gut microbiota.

In order to alleviate toxic effects of aflatoxins B1 (AFB1) and zearalenone (ZEA) on broiler production performance and gut microbiota, three kinds of compound probiotics (CP) were selected. The optimal ratios of Bacillus subtilis, Lactobacillus casei and Candida utilis in broiler diets were 7, 5 and 6 log CFU/g for ZEA biodegradation (CP1); 6, 7 and 7 log CFU/g for AFB1 biodegradation (CP2); 7, 6 and 7 log CFU/g for ZEA + AFB1 biodegradation (CP3). A total of 350 1-day-old Ross broilers were randomly divided into 7 groups. Group A was the basal diet, group B-G contained ZEA, AFB1, ZEA + AFB1,

Effect of Ligilactobacillus salivarius and Other Natural Components against Anaerobic Periodontal Bacteria.

In this present study, the bacteriostatic effect of Salistat SGL03 and the Lactobacillus salivarius strain contained in it was investigated in adults in in vivo and in vitro tests on selected red complex bacteria living in the subgingival plaque, inducing a disease called periodontitis, i.e., chronic periodontitis. Untreated periodontitis can lead to the destruction of the gums, root cementum, periodontium, and alveolar bone. Anaerobic bacteria, called periopathogens or periodontopathogens, play a key role in the etiopathogenesis of periodontitis. The most important periopathogens of the oral

Consistent responses of soil microbial taxonomic and functional attributes to mercury pollution across China.

BACKGROUND: The ecological consequences of mercury (Hg) pollution-one of the major pollutants worldwide-on microbial taxonomic and functional attributes remain poorly understood and largely unexplored. Using soils from two typical Hg-impacted regions across China, here, we evaluated the role of Hg pollution in regulating bacterial abundance, diversity, and co-occurrence network. We also investigated the associations between Hg contents and the relative abundance of microbial functional genes by analyzing the soil metagenomes from a subset of those sites. RESULTS: We found that soil Hg largely

Comparative analysis of the fecal bacterial community of five harbor seals (Phoca vitulina).

The gut microbiota has many beneficial effects on host metabolism and health, and its composition is determined by numerous factors. It is also assumed that there was a co-evolution of mammals and the bacteria inhabiting their gut. Current knowledge of the mammalian gut microbiota mainly derives from studies on humans and terrestrial animals, whereas those on marine mammals are sparse. However, they could provide additional information on influencing factors, such as the role of diet and co-evolution with the host. In this study, we investigated and compared the bacterial diversity in the fece

Characteristics of Microbiota in Different Segments of the Digestive Tract of Orange-Collared Keelback (Rhabdophis himalayanus).

The gastrointestinal tract of animals plays an essential role in digestion and nutrient absorption. The diversity of gut microbiota is critical for maintaining the physiological functions of animals. However, current research has focused primarily on mammals; research on the gut microbiota of reptiles, particularly snakes, remains limited. This study utilized metagenomic sequencing and untargeted metabolomics to investigate the microbial community composition and functional potential in the stomach, large intestine, and small intestine of the Orange-collared Keelback (Rhabdophis himalayanus).
