Relationship of back muscle and knee extensors with the compensatory mechanism of sagittal alignment in a community-dwelling elderly population.

Compensatory mechanisms, such as a decrease in thoracic spine kyphosis and posterior tilting or rotation of the pelvis, aim to achieve optimal alignment of the spine. However, the effect of muscle strength on these compensatory mechanisms has not been elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the impact of back muscle and lower extremity strength on compensatory mechanisms in elderly people. Overall, 409 community-dwelling elderly participants (164 men, 245 women) were included. Age, disc degeneration, and 2 or more vertebral fractures showed a significant increase of risk for sagittal verti

Reverse turnover pedicled latissimus dorsi muscle flap for lower back reconstruction: Two case reports.

RATIONALE: Large soft tissue defects on the lower back represent a treatment challenge. Among a variety of reconstructive procedures, the latissimus dorsi (LD) muscle or musculocutaneous flap is one of most frequently used pedicled flaps. However, the pedicled LD flap carries a bulky pivot point and a short arc of rotation. If a pedicled LD muscle flap is transferred using a reverse turnover pattern, theses drawbacks can be avoided. PATIENT CONCERNS: The first patient was a 56-year-old man with hepatocellular carcinoma and multiple bone metastases involving D11-L4 vertebral bodies. A chronic

Changes in multifidus and abdominal muscle size in response to microgravity: possible implications for low back pain research.

PURPOSE: In microgravity, muscle atrophy occurs in the intrinsic muscles of the spine, with changes also observed in the abdominal muscles. Exercises are undertaken on the International Space Station and on Earth following space flight to remediate these effects. Similar effects have been seen on Earth in prolonged bed rest studies and in people with low back pain (LBP). The aim of this case report was to examine the effects of microgravity, exercise in microgravity and post-flight rehabilitation on the size of the multifidus and antero-lateral abdominal muscles. METHODS: Ultrasound imaging w

A new concept for evaluating muscle function in the lower extremities in cases of low back pain syndrome in anamnesis.

INTRODUCTION: There are difficulties in objective evaluation of activity of the muscles in the lower extremities of patients after successful treatment of sciatica and pseudosciatica, when no clear clinical symptoms are detected. However, the existence of some muscle dysfunction can be hypothesised and its detection was the aim of the study. OBJECTIVE: Recordings from chosen lower extremity muscles during standing were performed as supplementary differential diagnosis in evaluation of these patients. EMG in standing positions constitutes a new methodological approach not described in detail.

Assessing the impact of oar blade angle on lower back muscle activation during on-water rowing, a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Rowing is a sport that places significant stress on the lower back, often leading to low back pain (LBP) injuries among athletes. Laboratory studies have shown that rowing with an oar blade under an angle is more efficient compared to a traditional blade. The effect of blade angle on the lower back is unknown. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the effect of different oar blade angles on the muscle activation of the lower back muscles during on-water rowing. METHODS: Seven collegiate (five males, two females) athletes row 500 m on water twice, once with a tradition

Muscle Thickness and Function of Transversus Abdominis and Gluteus Medius in Individuals with Chronic Non-Specific Low Back Pain.

Background: Non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) is associated with altered neuromuscular control of the lumbopelvic-hip complex (LPHC). However, the functional behavior of the transversus abdominis (TrA) and gluteus medius (GM) during upright postural tasks, with and without the abdominal drawing-in maneuver (ADIM), remains unclear. This study aimed to compare TrA and GM activation between individuals with NSLBP and asymptomatic controls during standing and single-leg stance using rehabilitation ultrasound imaging (RUSI). Methods: Thirty-two participants (16 with NSLBP and 16 asymptomatic contr

Lower Back Muscle Fatigue Recognition Based on the Fusion-Information of Multi-Channel sEMG and NIRS Simultaneous Recordings.

Accurate recognition of muscle fatigue in the lower back is essential for preventing low back pain and reducing the risk of occupational injuries. However, current recognition accuracy remains unsatisfactory due to limitations in both measurement tools and recognition algorithms. This study proposes a novel recognition framework for muscle fatigue based on a 60-channel hybrid physiological sensor array and a deep learning algorithm. The sensor array, which integrated surface electromyography (sEMG) electrodes and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) probes, enabled simultaneous, co-located record
