Pneumonia caused by Chlamydia psittaci likely occurs considerably more frequently than is suggested by the mere 100 to 200 cases reported annually to public health authorities. Parrots and other psittacine birds still are regarded as the major reservoir of the infectious agent and most recognized cases are associated with owning pet birds or working in a pet store. It was once thought that birds imported from abroad, often illegally, were a principal source, but many domestic breeder flocks of pet birds now have become infected. There is little that is distinctive in the clinical presentation

Leptospirosis, also known as "rat-urine disease", is a neglected zoonotic and waterborne disease that is caused by Leptospira spp. This disease is transmitted by direct and indirect exposure to the urine and stool of infected animals. The current estimate has highlighted that leptospirosis has caused at least one million cases and 60,000 deaths, with high endemicity in tropical regions. With climate change, urbanisation, and increasing human-animal interaction, the threat of leptospirosis and other zoonotic diseases will continue to emerge. Investing in multidisciplinary research, technology,

Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a slow-growing, Gram-negative bacterium commonly found as a part of the normal oral flora of dogs and cats, and it is associated with severe systemic infections following dog bites, especially in immunocompromised patients. Although spondylodiscitis due to Capnocytophaga species has been reported in the literature, cases involving previously operated spinal segments are extremely rare. A 52-year-old woman working as a dog trainer presented with fever, headache, photophobia, and lumbar back pain. Her medical history included an L5-S1 hemilaminectomy performed 9-year

OBJECTIVES: Streptococcus suis is an emerging zoonotic porcine pathogen and a leading cause of adult bacterial meningitis in Southeast Asia, associated with raw pork consumption. Most zoonotic S. suis infections globally are caused by strains from lineage CC1 carrying a serotype 2 capsule. However, in Thailand, ∼40% of the reported zoonotic infections are caused by 2 endemic lineages, CC104 and CC233, which also have a serotype 2 capsule. In this study, we aimed to identify the drivers of the emergence and recent evolution of these two lineages.
METHODS: We sequenced the whole genomes of 141

Brucella melitensis is a major livestock bacterial pathogen and zoonosis, causing disease and infection-related abortions in small ruminants and humans. A considerable burden to animal-based economies today, the presence of Brucella in Neolithic pastoral communities has been hypothesised but we lack direct genomic evidence thus far. We report a 3.45X B. melitensis genome preserved in an ~8000 year old sheep specimen from Menteşe Höyük, Northwest Türkiye, demonstrating that the pathogen had evolved and was circulating in Neolithic livestock. The genome is basal with respect to all known B. meli

Antimicrobial resistance, an escalating problem worldwide, affects a broad range of human diseases. Excessive and inappropriate drug usage is the key driver for the emergence of resistant organisms. Travel, trade and mass migration form an important mode for their spread. The use of molecular biology provides the means of understanding the genesis and spread of the genes for drug resistance. Antimicrobial use in veterinary practice as food additives causes selection of resistant zoonotic pathogens that may spread to humans. Comprehensive surveillance systems should be designed and implemented

Streptococcus agalactiae, or Group B Streptococcus (GBS) sequence type 283 (ST283), has emerged as a foodborne zoonotic pathogen of increasing concern, particularly in Southeast Asia. It gained global recognition following a major outbreak in Singapore in 2015, where it caused severe invasive infections such as meningitis, septic arthritis, and bacteremia, even in previously healthy adults, and was linked to the consumption of raw freshwater fish. Since then, outbreaks and sporadic cases of ST283 have been reported in China and Southeast Asia, with incidental reports in a growing number of cou

Campylobacter infections sourced mainly to poultry products, are the most important bacterial foodborne zoonoses worldwide. No effective measures to control these infections in broiler production exist to date. Here, we used passive immunization with hyperimmune egg yolks to confer broad protection of broilers against Campylobacter infection. Two novel vaccines, a bacterin of thirteen Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni) and C. coli strains and a subunit vaccine of six immunodominant Campylobacter antigens, were used for the immunization of layers, resulting in high and prolonged levels of specifi

Wild birds have been considered to be reservoirs of enteric human pathogens and vectors of resistance dissemination to the environment. During annual migration, they potentially play a role in the epidemiology of human associated zoonoses. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of isolation and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Enterobacteriaceae members isolated from cloacal swabs of common European wild birds. Fifty-five cloacal swabs were taken during birds' entrance evaluation in a rescue centre for injured wild birds in the Province of Messina (Sicily, Italy). All s

The aim of this study was to investigate seroprevalences to zoonotic pathogens in hunters, to compare the results with other predisposed occupational groups already investigated and to propose preventive measures. Blood samples were taken from 146 male and 3 female hunters from the provinces of Styria and Burgenland in the south-east of Austria and anamnestic data were obtained using a questionnaire. The serological investigations included the following bacterial, viral and parasitic zoonotic agents or zoonoses, respectively (antibody prevalence rates in brackets): borreliosis (IgG 42%, IgM 7%

Secondary infectious diseases contribute substantially to morbidity and mortality of people infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The authors developed comprehensive, practical recommendations for prevention of infectious complications in HIV-infected people. Recommendations are concerned with the pathogens that are more common or more severe in HIV-infected people. Several infectious complications can be prevented by avoiding ingestion of contaminated food or water. Zoonoses can be prevented by precautions to be taken in contacts with animals. The risk of several fungal diseases c

Wild animals often serve as reservoirs for vector-borne zoonoses, which are on the rise worldwide but have not yet been sufficiently researched. Vector-borne zoonoses, such as those caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, and Dirofilaria immitis, are a growing public health concern due to their increasing incidence and broad host range. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors for vector-borne bacterial (borreliosis, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis) and parasitic (dirofilariasis) pathogens and to detect some of these pathogens in the red f

BACKGROUND: The interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health drives emerging threats, such as antimicrobial-resistant pathogens. The widespread use of the same antimicrobials in both human and livestock may play a role in interspecies bacterial transmission by disrupting natural microbial communities and creating an environment favouring resistant bacteria. Pigs and poultry receive high levels of antimicrobials and are reservoirs of multidrug-resistant bacteria, including Streptococcus suis, a zoonotic pig pathogen. S. suis detection in non-porcine hosts, particularly poultry,

Zoonotic diseases have become a significant public health concern due to their capacity to cross species barriers and cause widespread outbreaks. Conventional diagnostic and therapeutic strategies often lack the specificity, sensitivity, and rapid adaptability required for effective disease management. Therefore, aptamers, single-stranded oligonucleotides, have emerged as powerful tools in detection and therapeutics. This review elucidates the role of aptamer-based technologies in diagnosing and treating bacterial, viral, and parasitic zoonoses, including Leptospira, Helicobacter pylori, rabie
