Changes in Serum Electrolytes, ECG, and Baroreflex Sensitivity during Combined Pituitary Stimulation Test.

The mechanisms by which hypoglycemia increases cardiovascular mortality remain unclear. The aim of the study is to investigate changes in serum electrolytes, norepinephrine concentrations, electrocardiography, and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) and associations between corrected QT (QTc) intervals and the changes in serum electrolytes during combined pituitary stimulation test (CPST). We recruited the subjects who were admitted to the Gyeongsang National University Hospital to undergo CPST between September 2013 and December 2014. Participants were 12 patients suspected of having hypopituitarism

Acute effects of arterial baroreflex on sympathetic nerve activity and plasma norepinephrine concentration.

Arterial pressure (AP) elevates as a logarithmic function of exogenously administered dose of norepinephrine (NE). In contrast, AP is nearly linearly correlated with efferent sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) during acute baroreflex intervention. The present study aimed at quantifying the relationship between SNA and plasma NE concentration during acute baroreflex intervention. Carotid sinus regions were isolated from systemic circulation in five Wistar Kyoto rats, and carotid sinus pressure was changed among 60, 100, 120, 140, and 180 mm Hg every 2 min. Arterial blood (0.2 ml) was obtained at

Baroreceptor stimulation enhanced nitric oxide vasodilator responsiveness, a new aspect of baroreflex physiology.

OBJECTIVE: Increasing evidence suggests that endothelial nitric oxide (NO) deficit and baroreflex dysfunction are associated with a variety of cardiovascular conditions, ranging from arterial hypertension to stroke and coronary heart disease, importantly appearing even in preclinical stages of the disease. To test the hypothesis that the arterial baroreflex has a modulatory effect on NO-dependent vasodilation, sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a spontaneous NO-donor, vasodilatory effect was studied in conjunction with sinocarotid baroreceptor magnetic stimulation and potential implementation in NO d

α-lipoic acid reduces hypertension and increases baroreflex sensitivity in renovascular hypertensive rats.

Renovascular hypertension has robust effects on control of blood pressure, including an impairment in baroreflex mechanisms, which involves oxidative stress. Although α-lipoic acid (LA) has been described as a potent antioxidant, its effect on renovascular hypertension and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) has not been investigated. In the present study we analyzed the effects caused by chronic treatment with LA on blood pressure, heart rate and baroreflex sensitivity (sympathetic and parasympathetic components) in renovascular hypertensive rats. Male Wistar rats underwent 2-Kidney-1-Clip (2K1

Central angiotensin (1-7) enhances baroreflex gain in conscious rabbits with heart failure.

In chronic heart failure (CHF), arterial baroreflex function is impaired, in part, by activation of the central renin-angiotensin system. A metabolite of angiotensin (Ang) II, Ang-(1-7), has been shown to exhibit cardiovascular effects that are in opposition to that of Ang II. However, the action of Ang-(1-7) on sympathetic outflow and baroreflex function is not well understood, especially in CHF. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of intracerebroventricular infusion of Ang-(1-7) on baroreflex control of heart rate and renal sympathetic nerve activity in conscious rabbits with C

Arterial blood pressure and baroreflex sensitivity 1-18 years after completing anthracycline therapy.

UNLABELLED: The analysis of short-term blood pressure regulation in children, adolescents and young adults 1 to 18 years after the treatment with anthracyclines known to have cardiotoxic side effects for oncological diseases was the aim of the present study. Thirty-one subjects treated with anthracyclines (PA) and 11 subjects treated with different antitumour drugs (P0) were investigated twice (the interval between two investigations 1-9 years). Three hundred and thirty-nine healthy subjects served as controls (C). Systolic (SBP), diastolic blood pressures (DBP) in the finger arteries and inte

The cold face test: a non-baroreflex mediated test of cardiac vagal function.

Application of cold to the face evokes potent bradycardia and a pressor response, similar to the diving reflex. However, the role of the baroreceptors in this response is unclear. Ten healthy controls and two patients with baroreflex impairment were recruited. A cold face test (CFT) was induced by the application of three cold packs (0.5 degrees C) to the face. Heart rate (ECG), blood pressure (Finapres) and skin temperature (forehead electrode) were recorded continuously. All data were analyzed using unpaired Students t-tests, and expressed as mean +/- SD. In all controls, CFT induced bradyca

Augmented input from cardiac sympathetic afferents inhibits baroreflex in rats with heart failure.

It has been established that the baroreflex is markedly decreased in chronic heart failure (CHF). Our recent study has indicated that activation of the cardiac sympathetic afferent reflex (CSAR) inhibits the baroreflex in normal rats, and in the rats with CHF the CSAR is significantly enhanced, which is related to augmented central angiotensin II (Ang II) mechanism. Therefore, the hypothesis is that the augmented CSAR in the CHF state tonically inhibits the baroreflex via central AT1 receptor. To test the hypothesis, the rats with myocardial infarction-induced CHF or sham surgery were anesthet

Simulated microgravity produces attenuated baroreflex-mediated pressor, chronotropic, and inotropic responses in mice.

Whether myocardial contractile impairment contributes to orthostatic intolerance (OI) is controversial. Accordingly, we used transient bilateral carotid occlusion (TBCO) to compare the in vivo pressor, chronotropic, and inotropic responses (parts 1 and 2) to open-loop selective carotid baroreceptor unloading in anesthetized mice. In part 3, in vitro myocyte responses to isoproterenol in mice exposed to hindlimb unweighting (HLU) for approximately 2 wk were determined. Heart rate (HR) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) responses to TBCO were measured. In control mice, TBCO increased HR (15 +/- 2

Slow breathing improves arterial baroreflex sensitivity and decreases blood pressure in essential hypertension.

Sympathetic hyperactivity and parasympathetic withdrawal may cause and sustain hypertension. This autonomic imbalance is in turn related to a reduced or reset arterial baroreflex sensitivity and chemoreflex-induced hyperventilation. Slow breathing at 6 breaths/min increases baroreflex sensitivity and reduces sympathetic activity and chemoreflex activation, suggesting a potentially beneficial effect in hypertension. We tested whether slow breathing was capable of modifying blood pressure in hypertensive and control subjects and improving baroreflex sensitivity. Continuous noninvasive blood pres

Arterial baroreflex function determines the survival time in lipopolysaccharide-induced shock in rats.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) mimics many of the effects of septic shock. LPS-induced death has been attributed to systemic hypotension, hyporeactiveness to vasoconstrictors, metabolic acidosis, and organ damage. However, there is no research directed to the involvement of the baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) in LPS-induced death. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of BRS on the survival time after lethal LPS challenge. Four groups of rats were used. Each rat received an equivalent dose of intravenous LPS (50 mg/kg). It was found that the anesthetized sinoaortic-denervated (SAD) rats

Hyperventilation alters arterial baroreflex control of heart rate and muscle sympathetic nerve activity.

Interactions between mechanisms governing ventilation and blood pressure (BP) are not well understood. We studied in 11 resting normal subjects the effects of sustained isocapnic hyperventilation on arterial baroreceptor sensitivity, determined as the alpha index between oscillations in systolic BP (SBP) generated by respiration and oscillations present in R-R intervals (RR) and in peripheral sympathetic nerve traffic [muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA)]. Tidal volume increased from 478 +/- 24 to 1,499 +/- 84 ml and raised SBP from 118 +/- 2 to 125 +/- 3 mmHg, whereas RR decreased from 9

Preoptic recess ablation selectively increases baroreflex sensitivity to angiotensin II in conscious rats.

Angiotensin II (ANG II) attenuates baroreflex sensitivity through central pathways. However, the specific CNS sites where ANG II inhibits baroreflexes are not completely understood. The periventricular tissue of the anteroventral third cerebral ventricle (AV3V) mediates several responses to centrally and peripherally administered ANG II. Therefore, these studies determined the effects of bilateral electrolytic ablation of AV3V periventricular tissue on reflex-induced changes in heart rate during pressor and depressor responses evoked by IV administration of phenylephrine (PE), ANG II, and nitr

Spontaneous indices correlate with baroreflex gain only in adults with spinal cord injury.

PURPOSE: Spontaneous indices have been widely used to assess baroreflex gain despite their numerous limitations and concerns regarding their validity, reliability, and reproducibility. In this retrospective study, we investigated whether spontaneous baroreflex indices reflect cardiovagal baroreflex gain assessed by the neck-chamber technique in those with spinal cord injury (SCI) and in uninjured individuals. SCI represents a model of preserved cardiovagal baroreflex control coupled with impaired sympathetic effects on the vasculature. METHODS: We derived three spontaneous indices of barorefl

Baroreflex-sympathoneural dysfunction characterizes at-risk individuals with preclinical central Lewy body diseases.

PURPOSE: In central Lewy body diseases (LBDs) such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), by the time parkinsonism or cognitive dysfunction becomes manifest, substantial central neurodegeneration has already occurred. Cardiovascular autonomic biomarkers might detect preclinical central LBDs in at-risk individuals, enabling possibly effective disease-modifying treatment. METHODS: In the prospective, longitudinal PDRisk study, 59 participants provided information about family history of PD, olfactory dysfunction, dream enactment behavior, and orthostatic intolerance or

Blood Pressure Management in Afferent Baroreflex Failure: JACC Review Topic of the Week.

Afferent baroreflex failure is most often due to damage of the carotid sinus nerve because of neck surgery or radiation. The clinical picture is characterized by extreme blood pressure lability with severe hypertensive crises, hypotensive episodes, and orthostatic hypotension, making it the most difficult form of hypertension to manage. There is little evidence-based data to guide treatment. Recommendations rely on understanding the underlying pathophysiology, relevant clinical pharmacology, and anecdotal experience. The goal of treatment should be improving quality of life rather than normali

AltitudeOmics: Spontaneous Baroreflex Sensitivity During Acclimatization to 5,260 m: A Comparison of Methods.

INTRODUCTION: Baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) is essential to ensure rapid adjustment to variations in blood pressure (BP). Spontaneous baroreflex function can be assessed using continuous recordings of blood pressure. The goal of this study was to compare four methods for BRS quantification [the sequence, Bernardi's (BER), frequency and transfer function methods] to identify the most consistent method across an extreme range of conditions: rest and exercise, in normoxia, hypoxia, hypocapnia, and hypercapnia. METHODS: Using intra-radial artery BP in young healthy participants, BRS was calculated

Resting spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity and cardiac autonomic control in anabolic androgenic steroid users.

OBJECTIVES: Misuse of anabolic androgenic steroids in athletes is a strategy used to enhance strength and skeletal muscle hypertrophy. However, its abuse leads to an imbalance in muscle sympathetic nerve activity, increased vascular resistance, and increased blood pressure. However, the mechanisms underlying these alterations are still unknown. Therefore, we tested whether anabolic androgenic steroids could impair resting baroreflex sensitivity and cardiac sympathovagal control. In addition, we evaluate pulse wave velocity to ascertain the arterial stiffness of large vessels. METHODS: Fourtee

Baroreflex autonomic control in human spinal cord injury: Physiology, measurement, and potential alterations.

The arterial baroreflex is a primary regulator of autonomic outflow to effectively regulate acute changes in blood pressure. After a spinal cord injury (SCI), regulation of autonomic function is disrupted, although the damage of the autonomic pathways may not necessarily be related to the severity of injury (i.e. level and completeness). Nonetheless, it can be assumed that there would be greater loss of sympathetic innervation with higher level of injury and that cardiac parasympathetic control would remain intact regardless of injury level. In those with SCI, impaired baroreflex regulation ha
