A Rhesus Monkey With a Naturally Occurring Impairment of Disparity Vergence. I. Behavioral Comparisons to Vergence in a Normal Animal.

PURPOSE: Human children with disorders affecting vergence eye movements have difficulty during close work, such as reading. Patients with convergence insufficiency show a receded near point and an exophoria that is greater at near than at far. Neurologic abnormalities may underlie these symptoms, but it is difficult to test this idea directly because there is no animal model for this disorder. In the present case report, we describe behavioral testing in a rhesus monkey with a naturally occurring impairment of vergence eye movements (monkey CI). METHODS: Three monkeys were trained to perform

Prenatal alcohol exposure and sleep-wake behaviors: exploratory and naturalistic observations in the clinical setting and in an animal model.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical research and studies using animal models have revealed a complex and relatively under-explored interaction between prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and alterations in sleep-wake behaviors. OBJECTIVES: To utilize a structured naturalistic observation-based methodology, consisting of descriptive elements, to provide insight into possible links between altered sleep and disruptive daytime presentations in children and adolescents with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). To apply a similar structured behavioral observation protocol in a PAE animal model to compare outcom

Effects of lithium on oxidative stress and behavioral alterations induced by lisdexamfetamine dimesylate: relevance as an animal model of mania.

Lisdexamfetamine dimesylate (LDX) is a prodrug that requires conversion to d-amphetamine (d-AMPH) for bioactivity. Treatment with d-AMPH induces hyperlocomotion and is regarded as a putative animal model of bipolar mania. Therefore, we sought to determine the behavioral and oxidative stress alterations induced by sub-chronic LDX administration as well as their reversal and prevention by lithium in rats. A significant increment in locomotor behavior was induced by LDX (10 and 30 mg/kg). To determine Li effects against LDX-induced alterations, in the reversal protocol rats received LDX (10 or 30

Hyper-phosphorylation of GSK-3β: possible roles in chlorpyrifos-induced behavioral alterations in animal model of depression.

In recent years, the widespread use of chlorpyrifos (CPF) has aroused concerns regarding its potential neurotoxic effects, especially in developing individuals. One of the major consequences of CPF exposure is mood disorders such as depression. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated susceptibility to depression in populations with a history of CPF exposure. Our previous study indicated that repeated CPF exposure in doses from 10 to 160 mg/kg elicits depression- and anxiety-like alterations. However, whether this alteration is due to persistent inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was n

A behavioral route to dysfunctional representations: the effects of training approach or avoidance tendencies towards novel animals in children.

We examined the effects of training to approach or avoid novel animals on fear-related responses in children. Ninety-five primary school children (9-13 years old) were instructed to repeatedly push away or pull closer pictures of novel animals. We tested whether this manipulation would lead to changes in self-reported attitudes, implicit attitudes, fear beliefs, and avoidance behaviors towards these animals. The training produced more positive self-reported attitudes towards the pulled animal and more negative attitudes towards the pushed animal. After the training, girls reported more fear an

Behavioral and genetic evidence for a novel animal model of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Predominantly Inattentive Subtype.

BACKGROUND: According to DSM-IV there are three subtypes of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, namely: ADHD predominantly inattentive type (ADHD-PI), ADHD predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type (ADHD-HI), and ADHD combined type (ADHD-C). These subtypes may represent distinct neurobehavioral disorders of childhood onset with separate etiologies. The diagnosis of ADHD is behaviorally based; therefore, investigations into its possible etiologies should be based in behavior. Animal models of ADHD demonstrate construct validity when they accurately reproduce elements of the etiology, bioch

Using an animal model to assess the long-term behavioral and biological consequences of adolescent abuse and exposure to alcohol.

During adolescence or adulthood, male hamster siblings were divided into control and experimental groups and exposed to periods of either mild or traumatic stress outside their individual nests. Mild stress is the simple exposure to a novel environment while the traumatic stressor is repeated daily subjugation by a dominant hamster. Over adolescence and adulthood, animals had free access to alcohol. The behavior and neuroendocrinology were assessed over these developmental periods in response to these environmental conditions. As adults, animals with a history of traumatic stress in adolescenc

Sex differences in the effects of calcitonin gene-related peptide signaling on migraine-like behavior in animal models: a narrative review.

Migraine is a common neurological disorder with a typical onset in adolescence or early adulthood. Migraine is three times more common in women than men, but the definitive cause underlying the observed disparity is not fully understood. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a neuropeptide and potent vasodilator that is now clearly linked to migraine based on the efficacy of drugs targeting its signaling. While the efficacy and safety of drugs targeting CGRP are now well established, there is a shortage of studies exploring sex differences between CGRP and CGRP-based therapy related to mig

Chicken or the Egg: The Reciprocal Association Between Feeding Behavior and Animal Welfare and Their Impact on Productivity in Dairy Cows.

Feeding behavior in dairy cattle has a significant impact on feed efficiency, which is important for increasing the profitability of livestock and, at the same time, reducing the environmental impact. Feeding behavior can be measured by feeding time, meal duration, meal frequency, feeding rate, and rumination time. Higher feed intake is related to lower feed efficiency; whereas, an increase in feeding time facilitates chewing, reduces feed particle size and increases its digestibility. More frequent and shorter meals are usually associated with a more efficient use of feed due to improvement o

Effects of the 5HT2C antagonist SB242084 on the pramipexole-induced potentiation of water contrafreeloading, a putative animal model of compulsive behavior.

RATIONALE: In rats, quinpirole, a dopaminergic D2/D3 receptor agonist, elicits both hyperdipsia and water "contrafreeloading" (CFL), a putative model of compulsivity. The role of D3 receptors in this effect remains unclear. Clomipramine (CIM) was found to contrast both hyperdipsia and CFL, but the role of serotonin in this effect requires further investigation. OBJECTIVES: We studied the effects of the preferential D3 agonist pramipexole (PPX) in both models. Furthermore, we tested the sensitivity of PPX-induced CFL to CIM and to the 5HT2c antagonist SB242084. METHODS: In experiment 1, drink

Enduring changes in brain and behavior produced by chronic amphetamine administration: a review and evaluation of animal models of amphetamine psychosis.

Some people who repeatedly use stimulant drugs, such as amphetamine (AMPH), develop an AMPH-induced psychosis that is similar to paranoid schizophrenia. There has been, therefore, considerable interest in characterizing the effects of chronic stimulant drug treatment on brain and behavior in non-human animals, and in developing an animal model of AMPH psychosis. A review of this literature shows that in non-human animals chronic AMPH treatment can produce at least two different syndromes, and both of these have been proposed as animal models of AMPH psychosis. The first syndrome is called 'AMP

Depression unveiled: Insights into etiology and animal models for behavioral assessment, exploring the multifactorial nature and treatment of depression.

Over the past century, significant shifts in daily living have led to an increased prevalence of mental disorders, often linked to hormonal imbalances. Among these, anxiety and depression stand out as prevalent diagnoses, particularly in industrialized nations. Depression, according to the DSM-5, is a heterogeneous condition that affects emotional, cognitive, and physical functioning, with symptoms including insomnia, sexual dysfunction, and weight changes. Cognitive theories of depression highlight its impact on judgment, decision-making, thinking, and focus. Depression's multifaceted nature

Soluble epoxide hydrolase deletion rescues behavioral and synaptic deficits by AMPK-mTOR pathway in autism animals.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social defects often accompanied with emotional comorbidities. Aberrations in synaptic function and plasticity are the core feature in the pathophysiology of ASD. Targeting soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) has been found to exert protection in a wide-range of pathological conditions. However, the regulation of sEH deficiency on the synaptic deficits of ASD and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The valproate (VPA)-treated ASD animal model with genetic sEH knockout was applied in the present study. The result

Mitochondrial dysfunction in animal models of PTSD: Relationships between behavioral models, neural regions, and cellular maladaptation.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a trauma-related condition that produces distressing fear memory intrusions, avoidance behaviors, hyperarousal, stress responses, insomnia and other symptoms. This review of rodent models of PTSD examines trauma effects on fear-related learning, cognition, and avoidance, emotional and arousal behaviors and on mitochondrial dysfunction in relevant neural pathways. The review focuses on research that includes four elements: consensus PTSD rodent models, behavioral phenotyping, mitochondrial dysfunction within key neural regions. This approach allows for t

A review of behavioral methods for the evaluation of cognitive performance in animal models: Current techniques and links to human cognition.

INTRODUCTION: Memory is defined as the ability to store, maintain and retrieve information. Learning is the acquisition of information that changes behavior and memory. Stress, dementia, head trauma, amnesia, Alzheimer's, Huntington, Parkinson's, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (WKS) may be mentioned among the diseases in which memory and learning are affected. The task of understanding deficits in memory and learning in humans is daunting due to the complexity of neural and cognitive mechanisms in the nervous system. This job is made more difficult for clinicians and researchers by the fact that

Risk mitigation for children exposed to drugs during gestation: A critical role for animal preclinical behavioral testing.

Many drugs with unknown safety profiles are administered to pregnant women, placing their offspring at risk. I assessed whether behavioral outcomes for children exposed during gestation to antidepressants, anxiolytics, anti-seizure, analgesic, anti-nausea and sedative medications can be predicted by more extensive animal studies than are part of the FDA approval process. Human plus rodent data were available for only 8 of 33 CNS-active drugs examined. Similar behavioral and cognitive deficits, including autism and ADHD emerged in human offspring and in animal models of these disorders after ex
