Men's controlling behaviors and women's experiences of physical violence in Malawi.

In the feminist paradigm, intimate partner violence (IPV) among heterosexual couples is gender asymmetric and largely a tactic of male control. However, research on the relationship between men's controlling behavior and physical violence against women is limited. This study examines whether having a controlling partner is associated with women's reports of experiencing physical violence in Malawi. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were conducted using data from 8,385 women who completed the domestic violence module of the Malawi 2004 Demographic and Health Survey. About 18 % of women report

The role of behavioral, normative and control beliefs in breast self-examination.

CONTEXT: A limited number of studies have been conducted examining the role of beliefs in the prediction of breast self-examination (BSE) behavior in Australian women, particularly women under 50 years of age for which it is the primary method of early detection of breast cancer. OBJECTIVE: The present research investigated the differences in behavioral, normative and control beliefs between BSE performers and non-performers, within a theory of planned behavior framework, to assist in the development of specific education programs aimed at increasing BSE amongst this demographic group. Medication-related impulse control and repetitive behaviors in Parkinson's disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: A range of impulse control and repetitive behaviors presumed to be related to dopaminergic medications has been recognized in Parkinson's disease. These behaviors are linked by their incentive or reward-based and repetitive natures and overlap with addictions. The behaviors include pathological gambling, hypersexuality, compulsive shopping, and compulsive eating and are related to punding and compulsive medication use. In patients on dopamine agonists, these behaviors as a group are relatively common, can have potentially devastating psychosocial consequences and are commonl

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for somatization disorder: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients diagnosed as having somatization disorder (SD) who present with a lifetime history of multiple, medically unexplained physical symptoms represent a significant challenge to health care providers. To date, no psychotherapeutic or pharmacologic intervention has been found to produce clinically meaningful improvement in symptoms or functioning of patients with SD. We examined the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for SD. METHODS: Eighty-four participants meeting criteria for SD were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 conditions: (1) standard medical care augmented by a

Guest-controlling effects on ER behaviors of beta-cyclodextrin polymer.

An effective and novel approach to obtaining electrorheological particles with high performance through the formation of host-guest complexes has been achieved. The significant preponderance of the host-guest complex formation is that the host structure can be controlled easily by adding different guests. Based on this point, six supramolecular complexes of beta-cyclodextrin cross-linking polymer with salicylic acid (beta-CDP-1), 5-chlorosalicylic acid (beta-CDP-2), 3,5-dichlorosalicylic acid (beta-CDP-3), 5-nitrosalicylic acid (beta-CDP-4), 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (beta-CDP-5), or 3-hydroxy

Marital interaction of agoraphobic women: a controlled, behavioral observation study.

Married couples with a female agoraphobic spouse (n = 22) were compared with demographically similar community control couples (n = 21) on self-report and observational measures of marital interaction. Consistent with hypotheses, husbands of agoraphobic women were more critical of their wives than were control husbands, and clinical couples were less likely to engage in positive problem solution than control couples. Contrary to hypothesis, clinical husbands were not less supportive than control husbands. Where general measures of marital distress were concerned, clinical couples, relative to

A placebo-controlled trial of cognitive-behavioral therapy and clomipramine in trichotillomania.

BACKGROUND: The major treatments reported to be effective in the treatment of trichotillomania are cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with habit reversal and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors such as clomipramine. However, the 2 treatments have not been previously compared with each other. This study examines the efficacy of CBT and clomipramine compared with placebo in the treatment of trichotillomania. METHOD: Twenty-three patients with trichotillomania as determined by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R entered and 16 completed a 9-week, placebo-controlled, randomiz

The relationship of locus of control and psychosocial-behavioral response in chronic headache.

It has been suggested that patients' perceptions of the impact chronic headache has on their lives as well as perceived control of their headaches may be associated with the intensity, duration, and exacerbation of pain they experience. The present study examined associations among International Headache Society (IHS) diagnostic category, pain characteristics such as severity and duration, perceived impact and control of headaches, and adaptive response. Two hundred twenty-five patients with migraine, tension-type, or combined migraine and tension-type headache served as subjects. General acti

Appearance changes associated with participation in a behavioral weight control program.

Relationships among objectively-measured weight changes, perceived changes in weight, and perceived changes in attractiveness of participants in a behavioral weight control program were examined. Participants in the program were weighed and photographed before and after treatment and at a six-month follow-up session. These photographs were then rated on the dimensions of perceived weight and perceived attractiveness by the same participants, who were kept blind to the times at which the photographs were taken. Correlational analyses indicated that there was little correspondence between object

Inhibition of acetylcholinesterase in the gut inhibits schedule-controlled behavior in the rat.

Rats were trained to press a lever under a multiple Fixed-Ratio 25 Fixed-Interval 50-second schedule of food reinforcement. Subcutaneous injection of soman, 80 micrograms/kg, suppressed responding under both schedules and inhibited acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the brain. AChE activity in the gastrointestinal tract was not significantly inhibited. In contrast, i.p. injection of either soman (10-40 micrograms/kg), neostigmine (75 micrograms/kg) or DFP (350 micrograms/kg) caused marked suppression of behavior and AChE activity of the gut, without affecting brain AChE. These doses caused marked

Reward Sensitivity (Behavioral Activation System), Cognitive, and Metacognitive Control in Gambling Behavior: Evidences From Behavioral, Feedback-Related Negativity, and P300 Effect.

The present research explored the main factors able to influence the subjects' choices in the case of decisions and distinguish between high- and low-risk decisions. Behavioral responses (Iowa Gambling Task [IGT]), meta-cognitive strategy, and event-related potential (feedback-related negativity [FRN] and P300) effects were used as predictive markers of gambling behavior. Behavioral activation system (BAS)-reward measure was applied to distinguish between high-BAS and low-BAS. It was found that higher-BAS opted in favor of the immediate reward, with a concomitant dysfunctional metacognition of

Behavioral parent training for disruptive behaviors in school-age children with autism: Secondary outcomes of a randomized controlled trial.

Children with autism often show disruptive behavior problems, which may cause significant impairment. Behavioral parent training is an effective intervention for other children with disruptive behavior, but research in children with autism is relatively scarce. We here report the secondary outcomes of a three-arm randomized controlled trial, comparing face-to-face and blended parent training to a waitlist control condition for children with autism and disruptive behavior. We previously found that face-to-face, but not blended parent training, relative to waitlist control, significantly improve

Predictors of Self-Injurious Behavior and Self-Restraint in Autism Spectrum Disorder: Towards a Hypothesis of Impaired Behavioral Control.

Self-injury is common in autism spectrum disorder (ASD); however few studies have investigated correlates of self-injury or the putative associations with self-restraint. Questionnaire data on self-injury, self-restraint, health conditions, overactivity/impulsivity and repetitive/restricted behavior were collected on 208 children and 216 adults with ASD (mean age = 24.10, range 6-61). Self-injury and self-restraint were frequent and significantly associated in both children (45.7% and 40.9%, p < 0.001) and adults (49.1, and 42.6%, p < 0.001). Severe self-injury was predicted by lower ability,

Randomized controlled trial of false safety behavior elimination therapy: a unified cognitive behavioral treatment for anxiety psychopathology.

We tested the efficacy of a unified cognitive-behavioral therapy protocol for anxiety disorders. This group treatment protocol, termed false safety behavior elimination therapy (F-SET), is a cognitive-behavioral approach designed for use across various anxiety disorders such as panic disorder (PD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). F-SET simplifies, as well as broadens, key therapeutic elements of empirically validated treatments for anxiety disorders to allow for easier delivery to heterogeneous groups of patients with anxiety psychopathology. Patients wit

Effectiveness of Specific Techniques in Behavioral Teacher Training for Childhood ADHD Behaviors: Secondary Analyses of a Randomized Controlled Microtrial.

Behavioral teacher training is an effective intervention for children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Intervention effectiveness may be enhanced by including intervention components that carry the strongest evidence for their effectiveness. A previous article of this group showed that both antecedent- (i.e., stimulus-control) and consequent-based (i.e., contingency management) techniques were highly effective in reducing daily teacher-rated, individually selected problem behaviors in a specific situation of the child. Effects were observed up to three months post interven

A blind randomized controlled trial of cognitive versus behavioral versus cognitive-behavioral therapy for patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Despite evidence that cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is effective for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), little is known about which components of therapy are most efficacious. The present study compared the efficacy of CBT with cognitive therapy (CT) and behavioral therapy (BT) for patients with RA. We hypothesized that CBT would be more efficacious on a broader range of outcomes. METHODS: Participants (n = 104) with classic or definite RA were randomized to receive one of three active treatments (CBT, CT or BT) or a wait-list control (WLC). Participants were assessed at baseline, po

Activation of GLP-1R ameliorates alcohol withdrawal induced anxiety-like behavior by regulating neuronal mitochondrial quality control.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a specific psychological state induced by repeated heavy drinking, and withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety are closely related to relapse after withdrawal. While neuronal damage caused by alcohol is considered a significant precipitating factor for withdrawal-induced anxiety, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: In this study, we established a mouse model of alcohol withdrawal through 3 months of chronic ethanol exposure (CEE) followed by withdrawal. Mice were treated with semaglutide (0.03 mg/kg) via intraperitoneal injectio
