Behavioral Therapies for Management of Premature Ejaculation: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Premature ejaculation (PE) is defined by short ejaculatory latency and inability to delay ejaculation causing distress. Management may involve behavioral and/or pharmacological approaches. AIM: To systematically review the randomized controlled trial (RCT) evidence for behavioral therapies in the management of PE. METHODS: Nine databases including MEDLINE were searched up to August 2014. Included RCTs compared behavioral therapy against waitlist control or another therapy, or behavioral plus drug therapy against drug treatment alone. [Correction added on 10 September 2015, afte

Behavioral therapy to treat urinary incontinence in Parkinson disease.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility and efficacy of exercise-based behavioral therapy to treat urinary incontinence (UI) in older adults with Parkinson disease (PD). METHODS: Participants with PD ≥50 years with ≥4 UI episodes on a 7-day bladder diary were recruited from movement disorders clinics. In 5 visits over 8 weeks, participants learned pelvic floor muscle exercises using computer-assisted EMG biofeedback, and bladder control strategies including urge suppression. Bladder diaries were used to reinforce techniques and monitor the primary outcome of UI frequency. Secondary outcomes incl

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for hoarding in the context of contamination fears.

Difficulty discarding and excessive acquiring can be treated using specialized cognitive-behavioral treatment that includes motivational interviewing, skills training, practice sorting and discarding, and cognitive restructuring. Early psychotherapy efforts to treat hoarding have proved less effective than this combination of methods targeted at the characteristic features of hoarding. Treatment strategies are illustrated through a case example of a woman struggling with both hoarding and contamination concerns.

The effects of drug and behavior therapy on urgency and voiding frequency.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The objective of this study was to examine the effects of drug therapy alone and combined with behavioral therapy on urgency and 24-voiding frequency in women with urge-predominant incontinence and to identify predictors of change. METHODS: A planned analysis of data from a multi-site, randomized, controlled trial (N = 307). Bladder diaries were used to document voids, incontinence, and urgency severity. RESULTS: Urgency scores decreased significantly within both treatment groups, but changes did not differ between groups (p = 0.30). Improvement in urgency was as

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for pathological gambling: cultural considerations.

Pathological gambling is a common disorder with severe consequences for patients and their families. This case study describes cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for pathological gambling and its general principles and provides an example of a modification of CBT techniques in the treatment of a 51-year-old immigrant Afro-Caribbean woman. The case depicts the contribution of beliefs, especially those that are part of a cultural system, to the perpetuation of a patient's disorder; the influence of family members' attitudes, moved by their cultural beliefs and values, in shaping the patient's be

[Significance of emotion-focused concepts to cognitive-behavioral therapy].

Emotions are the central process of motivation and play a key role in adaptive behavior in humans. Although cognitive-behavioral therapy stresses the importance of changing both cognition and behavior, there is growing emphasis on direct therapeutic work on emotions and emotional processing, as problematic emotional processes are at the core of nearly all psychic disorders. This type of work is the goal of emotion-focused psychotherapy, which centers on direct change of problematic emotions, especially those which are usually suppressed resp. overregulated by the patient. This paper examines t

[Cognitive-behavioral therapy for treatment of social anxiety disorder].

There is good evidence for the effectiveness of exposure-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in the treatment of social anxiety disorder (SAD). In this article, the Clark's cognitive model of SAD is presented, followed by the description of general CBT strategies, such as the shift from internal to external attention and the correction of anticipatory/postevent processing. Typical schemata in SAD and comorbid avoidant personality disorder are then illustrated, along with schema-focused approaches. Finally, a four-step CBT for SAD is suggested.

Behavioral therapy for treatment of stereotypic movements in nonautistic children.

Although typically described in autistic, mentally retarded, and sensory-deprived individuals, motor stereotypies also occur in normal children. In this preliminary report, the behavior modification techniques of habit reversal and differential reinforcement of other behavior were evaluated as a therapeutic modality for the suppression of stereotypic movements in nonautistic subjects. Twelve children, ages 6 to 14 years, with physiologic stereotypies were treated using a standardized treatment protocol. Clinical outcomes were based on differences between assessments obtained at baseline and on

Gamblers anonymous and cognitive-behavioral therapies for pathological gamblers.

Numerous types of treatments for pathological gambling have been described, but two of the most common are Gamblers Anonymous (GA) and cognitive-behavioral therapy. This paper describes some outcome data associated with the two approaches. It also reviews evidence suggesting that a combined intervention may enhance therapy engagement and reduce relapse rates.

Who benefits from cognitive behavioral therapy for vaginismus?

The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of a group of Turkish vaginismus patients who benefited from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and to study which factors this treatment model changes. Twenty-eight couples who applied to Psychiatry Clinic of Hacettepe University Hospital, Ankara, for treatment of vaginismus within the 6-month period participated in the study. Fourteen subjects quit the therapy after the initial assessment sessions. Other couples successfully completed the treatment. We assessed all the couples that completed the CBT at three times: during the i

Behavioral naltrexone therapy: an integrated treatment for opiate dependence.

Treatment of opiate dependence with naltrexone has been limited by poor compliance. Behavioral Naltrexone Therapy (BNT) was developed to promote adherence to naltrexone and lifestyle changes supportive of abstinence, by incorporating components from empirically validated treatments, including Network Therapy with a significant other to monitor medication compliance, the Community Reinforcement Approach, and voucher incentives. An overview is presented of the BNT treatment manual. In an uncontrolled Stage I trial (N = 47), 19% completed the 6-month course of treatment. Retention was especially

The outcome of behavior therapy for agoraphobia in relation to marital adjustment.

After intensively treating 18 agoraphobic patients with 13 1/2 hours of exposure in vivo, we examined the effects on both patients and their spouses over a period of six months, using questionnaire measures of symptoms and marital adjustment. Those patients whose marriages were rated as unsatisfactory before treatment improved less during treatment, and were significantly more likely to relapse during follow-up, than those patients with satisfactory marriages. The marriages of nine patients appeared to be adversely influenced by their symptomatic improvement, and two distinct types of marital

Medium-term Effects of Intensified Inpatient Dialectical Behavior Therapy on Psychosocial Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the medium-term effects of an intensified inpatient dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) program on psychosocial outcomes and predictors of response in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). While the effectiveness of DBT is well established, insights into psychosocial outcomes after inpatient treatment remain limited. METHODS: All 115 patients with BPD who participated in an 8-week inpatient DBT program at a university hospital in southern Germany in 2021 and 2022 were evaluated. Psychopathological changes were assessed using the short version o

Pixar's Inside Out as a Dialectical Behavior Therapy-Informed Intervention for Adults.

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an empirically validated treatment for chronic, difficult-to-treat, life-threatening mental health conditions. DBT can be challenging to implement and maintain in managed care systems because of the need for substantial infrastructure and intensive clinician training. As a result, most clients receive components of DBT, known as DBT-informed care. This model is valuable in its own right, including for individuals with less severe clinical symptoms. Additionally, clinicians who provide DBT experience professional benefit. Cinematherapy, the incorporation of
