Overlap Between Exposure to Suicidal Behavior and Indirect Interpersonal Violence: Evidence for a More Integrated Approach to Violence Research.

This study examines the overlap between indirect exposure to forms of interpersonal violence and suicidal behavior, and the impact of the co-occurrence of these exposures on indicators of depressed mood and substance use among adolescents. Participants were a national sample of 3,917 youth aged 14-15 years, recruited online between June 2018 and March 2020, including an oversample of sexual and gender minority youth. Eight in ten (81.3%) youth reported exposure to indirect interpersonal violence and/or suicidal behavior in their lifetimes: 39.5% reported only interpersonal violence exposure, 5

Peer ambassador stories: formative qualitative research to enhance the reach of PrEP, HIV testing, and behavioral health treatments to LMSM in South Florida.

Existing HIV prevention interventions, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and behavioral health treatments inadequately reach Latino men who have sex with men (LMSM) in the US. This study involved formative research to inform the content, design, and implementation of a scalable, low resource implementation strategy - peer ambassador stories - stories from peers to normalize using PrEP, HIV testing, and behavioral health treatment. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 LMSM to elucidate their content, design, and implementation preferences for peer ambassador stories. Men were

Commentary on: Are we overpathologizing everyday life? A tenable blueprint for behavioral addiction research. On the slippery slopes: The case of gambling addiction.

Billieux et al. (2015) propose that the recent proliferation of behavioral addictions has been driven by deficiencies in the underlying research strategy. This commentary considers how pathological gambling (now termed gambling disorder) traversed these challenges to become the first recognized behavioral addiction in the DSM-5. Ironically, many similar issues continue to exist in research on gambling disorder, including question-marks over the validity of tolerance, heterogeneity in gambling motives, and the under-specification of neuroimaging biomarkers. Nevertheless, I contend that the case

When and why women ask (or do not): Taking stock of research on gender differences in negotiation propensity, behavior, and outcomes.

Evidence first emerged several decades ago that women are less likely than men to initiate negotiations and perform less competitively than men in negotiations. Researchers also have discovered moderators of these effects, including structural ambiguity, representation role, and gender salience and relevance. Furthermore, the anticipation of backlash has emerged as a potential mechanism to explain gender differences in negotiations. Yet, more recent research has revealed varied findings concerning whether gender differences, underlying mechanisms, and moderators have shifted, as well as the ro

Effective and cost-effective strategies for recruiting rural adults into a civic engagement and health behavior change research study.

BACKGROUND: Rural populations have worse health outcomes than urban populations. Community-based health interventions can help to improve these outcomes, but rural populations are underrepresented in research. The goals of the study were to describe and examine the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of strategies to recruit into a rural, community-based health intervention study. METHODS: The Change Club study is a community-based health intervention conducted in medically underserved rural communities in Texas and New York to assess whether a civic engagement program improves health among

Profiling of research domain criteria-based behaviors following single prolonged stress in male C57BL/6J mice.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects approximately one in 11 people throughout their lifetime yet current treatment options, such as behavioral therapies or pharmaceuticals, suffer from low medical adherence and often fail to fully address all the symptoms. Therefore, it is necessary to better understand maladaptive behaviors in PTSD to guide new treatments. Single-prolonged stress (SPS) is a rodent model of stress that parallels certain human neurophysiological and neurobehavioral changes occurring in PTSD. SPS is a single-day sequential stressor exposure-restraint stress, group forc

Applicability of the theory of pain-sensorimotor interactions to orofacial pain and sensorimotor behavior, and implications for orofacial pain research and management.

The orofacial sensorimotor system encompasses a variety of orofacial tissues as well as several pathways and circuits in the central nervous system (CNS) that participate in orofacial sensorimotor behaviors such as chewing, facial expression, speech, and swallowing. Acute or chronic pain can severely affect these behaviors, but the relationships between sensorimotor behaviors and pain, and the factors influencing the interactions and underlying mechanisms have remained unclear. Several theories proposed to account for the interactions and mechanisms have not provided a comprehensive picture of

An Exercise and Wellness Behavior Change Program for Solid Organ Transplant: A Clinical Research Protocol for the Transplant Wellness Program.

BACKGROUND: Exercise prehabilitation is an evidence-based, safe, and effective method to increase quality of life, physical fitness and function, and post-surgical outcomes in solid organ transplant (SOT) patients. However, few prehabilitation programs for SOT patients exist in practice. Furthermore, there is a lack of multimodal prehabilitation programs that include behavior change support. To address this need, the Transplant Wellness Program (TWP) was designed. OBJECTIVES: The objective of the TWP is to assess both the effectiveness and implementation of a comprehensive and multimodal exer

Commentary: Optimism for the future of research on disruptive behaviors - an appreciation of good science as illustrated by Nobakht, Steinsbekk & Wichstrom (2023).

This paper by Nobakht, Steinsbekk & Wichstrom (2023) is a model of good science in the study of oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder. Their approach illustrates a thoughtful research design, statistical modeling sufficient to empirically evaluate developmental processes, and a full consideration of the theoretical implications of their work. This contrasts with a broad history of research on ODD and CD that far too often has only reified biased assumptions about these phenomena rather than rigorously scrutinizing them. Their demonstration of a unidirectional developmental flow of

Experimental Research on Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of Diffusion-Bonded Titanium Alloy Laminates with Preset Unbonded Areas.

This paper aimed to study the fatigue crack growth behavior of diffusion-bonded titanium alloy laminates (DB-TAL) with preset unbonded areas using an experimental method to understand the toughening mechanisms of presetting unbonded areas in DB-TAL. For two series of specimens of DB-TAL with preset unbonded areas with an open hole, which have a pre-notch at the open hole edge, fatigue experiments under tension-tension cyclic loading were conducted. The fatigue crack growth process, the crack growth rate, and the stress intensity factor on the crack front were analyzed. The results showed that

The Relationship Between Violence Syndemics and Sexual Risk Behaviors Among African American Adolescents: Implications for Future Research.

PURPOSE: We present a conceptual framework based on a review of the literature to highlight the interconnecting and reinforcing elements of a violence syndemic and how this syndemic influences sexual risk behaviors among African American heterosexual adolescents. METHODS: We review existing peer-reviewed published research from 2000 to 2020 that links a violence syndemic (i.e., racism and race-related stress, neighborhood and police violence, peer violence, and family violence and disruptions) to adolescent sexual risk behaviors. Empirical findings and theoretical underpinnings are used to do

Extraction Behavior of Acidic Phosphorus-Containing Compounds to Some Metal Ions: A Combination Research of Experimental and Theoretical Investigations.

To provide feasible methods for the extraction of valuable metals from spent batteries or low-grade primary ores, the extraction behavior of some representative acidic phosphorus-containing compounds (APCCs) as extractants is evaluated from the perspective of experimental and theoretical investigations in this work. Aqueous solutions containing five metal ions, Ca(II), Co(II), Mg(II), Mn(II), and Ni(II), were made to simulate leaching liquids, and the extraction of these metals was investigated. A simplified calculated model was used to evaluate the interaction between each extractant and meta
