Decreased gamma band power and increased betagamma phaseamplitude coupling are characteristic of brain activity in patients with chronic spinal cord injury.

Neurophysiological biomarkers are needed to characterize the condition of patients with spinal cord injury (SCI), for which effective symptomatic biomarkers are lacking. We recorded the resting-state magnetoencephalography data of 22 patients with SCI and 29 healthy controls. Power spectral density and phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) were assessed for six frequency bands using source-reconstructed cortical currents. Compared with controls, SCI patients exhibited significantly reduced gamma band power and increased beta-gamma PAC in the frontal cortex, including the primary motor area (q < 0.05,

Phase coupling in the beta and gamma frequencies of motor cortex activity is elevated in people with Parkinson's disease when medication is temporarily withheld.

OBJECTIVE: How neuronal oscillatory activity in Parkinson's disease (PD) is organized and coordinated is not yet known. We hypothesized that cross-frequency phase synchrony (CFS) in the beta and gamma frequencies measured over the motor cortex [using electroencephalography (EEG)] at rest would be elevated in people with PD compared with healthy controls. ON- versus OFF-medication tests in the PD group were further compared with the hypothesis that elevated CFS would be found in the OFF-medication state. METHODS: CFS in beta and gamma frequencies was estimated in EEG recordings from 15 people

Electrophysiological effects of deep brain stimulation in anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: To study deep brain stimulation (DBS)-induced electrophysiological changes over time in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). METHODS: We performed EEG recordings on 4 AN patients treated with DBS at 3 time points, and on 8 age-matched controls. We extracted oscillatory power in the alpha and beta bands, connectivity and global network organization parameters based on graph theory. RESULTS: We found strong significant within-subject changes in alpha and beta power over time. Nominally significant effects were observed for posterior left (L) alpha (p = 0.034) and anterior/posterior

Cognitive Processing for Step Precision Increases Beta and Gamma Band Modulation During Overground Walking.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether cognitive processing for defining step precision during walking could induce changes in electrocortical activity. Ten healthy adults (21-36 years) were asked to walk overground in three different conditions: (1) normal walking in a straight path (NW); (2) walking in a pre-defined pathway forcing variation in step width and length by stepping on green marks on the floor (only one color: W1C), and (3) walking in the same pre-defined W1C pathway while evaluating different combinations among the colors green, yellow and red, in which only one color

Cocaine-induced increases in EEG alpha and beta activity: evidence for reduced cortical processing.

To understand the effects of cocaine on the cerebral cortex, 14 male polydrug abusers were enrolled in a study on the effects of cocaine on the electroencephalogram (EEG). The experimental treatments were placebo, 20 mg cocaine or 40 mg cocaine i.v. administered in a double-blind, pseudorandom design. The EEG was recorded from 13 electrode positions over the left hemisphere during a 3-minute baseline recording and for 30 minutes after initiation of the i.v. injection. The spectral power for delta, theta, alpha and beta EEG bands was calculated from data collected in each 3-minute interval. Coc

A quantitative comparison of traditional reading of the EEG and interpretation of computer-extracted features in patients with supratentorial brain lesions.

The EEGs of adult patients with suspected supratentorial brain lesions were recorded on paper and on magnetic tape, using a small computer. The spectra of 16 channels were computed on a 40 sec sample. For each channel, a ratio of the type (delta + theta)/(alpha + beta) was computed and displayed on the computer terminal, a measure of the asymmetry in slow wave activity between homologous areas of the head was also displayed. This display is called a canonogram. It is believed to be a meaningful representation of the important characteristics of the EEG in the presence of supratentorial lesions

Co-existence of RBM20 and KCNQ1 gene mutations in a patient with long QT syndrome and dilated cardiomyopathy. "Which came first: Chicken or the egg?".

A 60-year-old female patient was taken to the emergency department with a history of syncope. ECG revealed polymorphic ventricular tachycardia which necessitated recurrent DC cardioversion. Post-reversion ECG showed sinus rhythm with prolonged corrected QTc. Bedside transthoracic echocardiogram revealed features suggestive of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) with severe left ventricular dysfunction. Next reversion to VT was managed with intravenous propranolol and DC cardioversion after which she remained in sinus rhythm. After the initiation of beta-blocker, she developed sinus bradycardia follow

Free triiodothyronine: a novel predictor of postoperative atrial fibrillation.

OBJECTIVE: Despite improved perioperative management, atrial fibrillation (AF) after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) remains a relevant clinical problem, whose pathogenetic mechanisms remain incompletely explained. A reduced incidence of postoperative AF has been described in CABG patients receiving IV tri-iodothyronine (T3). This study was designed to define the role of thyroid metabolism on the genesis of postoperative AF. METHODS AND RESULTS: Free T3 (fT3), free thyroxine (fT4), and thyroid stimulating hormone were assayed at admission in 107 consecutive patients undergoing isolated

Working memory load modulates oscillatory activity and the distribution of fast frequencies across frontal theta phase during working memory maintenance.

Working memory (WM) is a keystone of our cognitive abilities. Increasing load has been shown to dampen its performance and affect oscillatory neural activity in different frequency bands. Nevertheless, mixed results regarding fast frequencies activity and a lack of research on WM load modulations of cross-frequency phase-amplitude coupling mechanisms preclude a better understanding of the impact of increased WM load levels on brain activity as well as inter-regional communication and coordination supporting WM processes. Hence, we analyzed the EEG activity of 25 participants while performing a

Circadian rhythm disruption in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Implications for the post-acute sequelae of COVID-19.

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a common and disabling disorder primarily characterized by persistent fatigue and exercise intolerance, with associated sleep disturbances, autonomic dysfunction, and cognitive problems. The causes of ME/CFS are not well understood but may coincide with immune and inflammatory responses following viral infections. During the current SARS-CoV2 coronavirus pandemic, ME/CFS has been increasingly reported to overlap with persistent "long COVID" symptoms, also called the post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC). Given the prominence of ac

High-definition transcranial direct-current stimulation of left primary motor cortices modulates beta and gamma oscillations serving motor control.

Recent studies have linked non-invasive transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) with altered neural processing near the site of stimulation and across a distributed network of brain regions, with some evidence for a possible therapeutic role. However, negative results also exist and the potential impacts on motor-related neural oscillations have rarely been studied. Herein, we applied high-definition tDCS to the left primary motor cortex of 62 healthy adults in three sessions (anodal, cathodal and sham). Participants then performed a motor task with two conditions (i.e. cognitive interf

The relationship between EEG theta/beta ratio and response inhibition in autogenous and reactive obsessions.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a diverse mental health condition that leads to substantial impairment and currently has limited success in treatment outcomes. The aim of the current study was to examine the ratio of electroencephalographic (EEG) band power within the Autogenous-Reactive (AO-RO) taxonomy of OCD during inhibition to improve our understanding of the disorder. Inhibition was measured broadly using interference and action cancellation tasks while EEG data was recorded from 61 undergraduate students. EEG band power was computed from frontal-central electrodes Fz and Cz for t

Individualized Spectral Features in First-Episode and Drug-Naïve Major Depressive Disorder: Insights From Periodic and Aperiodic Electroencephalography Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The detection of abnormal brain activity plays an important role in the early diagnosis and treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). Recent studies have shown that the decomposition of the electroencephalography (EEG) spectrum into periodic and aperiodic components is useful for identifying the drivers of electrophysiologic abnormalities and avoiding individual differences. METHODS: In this study, we aimed to elucidate the pathological changes in individualized periodic and aperiodic activities and their relationships with the symptoms of MDD. EEG data in the eyes-closed rest

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation changes cognitive/motor tasks performance: An absolute alpha and beta power study.

The voluntary movement demands integration between cognitive and motor functions. During the initial stages of motor learning until mastery of a new motor task, and during a demanding task that is not automatic, cognitive and motor functions can be perceived as independent from each other. Areas used for actually performing motor tasks are essentially the same used by Motor Imagery (MI). The main objective of this study was to investigate inhibition effects on cognitive functions of motor skills induced by low-frequency (1 Hz) Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) at the sensory-

Midfrontal theta as moderator between beta oscillations and precision control.

Control of movements using visual information is crucial for many daily activities, and such visuomotor control has been revealed to be supported by alpha and beta cortical oscillations. However, it has been remained to be unclear how midfrontal theta and occipital gamma oscillations, which are associated with high-level cognitive functions, would be involved in this process to facilitate performance. Here we addressed this fundamental open question in healthy young adults by measuring high-density cortical activity during a precision force-matching task. We manipulated the amount of error by

How cerebral cortex protects itself from interictal spikes: The alpha/beta inhibition mechanism.

Interactions between interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) and distant cortical regions subserve potential effects on cognition of patients with focal epilepsy. We hypothesize that "Работает" brain areas at a distance from the epileptic focus may respond to the interference of IEDs by generating inhibitory alpha and beta oscillations. We predict that more prominent alpha-beta oscillations can be found in patients with less impaired neurocognitive profile. We performed a source imaging magnetoencephalography study, including 41 focal epilepsy patients: 21 with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) and

Tendency to ruminate and anxiety are associated with altered alpha and beta oscillatory power dynamics during memory for contextual details.

Rumination occurs when an individual becomes mentally stuck and cannot redirect attention away from an unwanted thought demonstrating cognitive inflexibility. Cognitive flexibility is important for various cognitive functions, including episodic memory. Trait rumination is a partial mediator in the relationship between depression and overgeneral episodic memory, suggesting that rumination may negatively influence memory for contextual details. Oscillations in the alpha (8-12 Hz) and beta (13-30 Hz) frequency bands are crucial for various cognitive functions (e.g., attention control and episodi

Oscillatory Dynamics of Feedback Processing in Adolescents with Prenatal Cocaine Exposure.

Prenatal cocaine exposure (PCE) has ramifications for feedback processing. Measuring neural oscillatory dynamics (during electroencephalography) provides insight into the time signatures and neural processes of feedback processing in adolescents with PCE. We measured spectral power in alpha and theta frequency bands while 49 adolescents with PCE and 34 non-drug exposed (NDE) performed a task with win/no-win feedback. Compared to NDE individuals, those with PCE showed reduced alpha power and increased theta power in response to no-win feedback. These findings suggest altered reactivity in PCE a
