Psychotomimetic-like behavioral effects of memantine in the mouse.

A single administration of mice with memantine (1-amino-3,5-dimethyladamantane), a glutamatergic N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, induced stereotyped behaviors in dose- and time-dependent manners. The predominant behavioral component of the stereotypy was a continuous, exaggerated sniffing which was accompanied by persistent locomotion. In contrast, a psychostimulant methamphetamine (METH) predominantly induced a stereotyped biting and other forms of intense stationary stereotypical behaviors. Memantine-induced stereotyped sniffing was attenuated by pretreatment with haloperido

[Vertigo and dizziness: the neurologist's perspective].

The spectrum of diagnoses of patients with dizziness as the leading symptom who consult a neurologist does not differ greatly from the spectrum of those who consult ear nose and throat (ENT) specialists or general practitioners (GP). The most frequent forms are benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo (BPPV), phobic postural vertigo, central vertigo disorders, Menière's disease, vestibular neuritis and bilateral vestibulopathy. However, the first and most important question that is posed to neurologists is whether it is a central or peripheral syndrome. In more than 90 % of cases this differentia

[Betaserc treatment of psychogenic vertigo].

An effect of betaserc on the character and intensity of vertigo (V), psycho-autonomic state of patients, vestibular functions and oculomotor system, using computer stimulating programs, has been studied in 39 patients with V. After 4 weeks of the treatment, betaserc exerted a positive effect on patients; however, the optimal effect was shown in patients with psychogenic V (73%). In this group, betaserc reduced both V and other psycho-autonomic disturbances. After betaserc treatment, patients with psychogenic V demonstrated a normalization of the vestibular responsiveness parameters in 70% of t

Analysis of risk factors influencing the outcome of the Epley maneuver.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most frequent type of vertigo. The treatment of canalithiasis of the posterior semicircular canal consists in performing a particle-repositioning maneuver, such as the Epley maneuver (EM). However, the EM is not effective in all cases. The objective of this study is to identify risk factors, which predict the EM failure, among the clinical variables recorded in anamnesis and patient examination. This is an observational prospective multicentric study. All patients presenting with BPPV were recruited and applied the EM and appointed for a follo

Brain histaminergic system: An emerging target for the treatment of feeding and eating-related disorders.

Feeding is an intrinsic and fundamental behavior regulated by complex neurobiological networks that integrate peripheral metabolic signals with neurotransmitter systems within key brain regions. Histamine, a biogenic amine acting as a neuromodulator in the central nervous system, plays a crucial role in the regulation of food intake and energy homeostasis. Within the hypothalamus, histaminergic neurons influence appetite-related circuits, primarily through H1R and H3R. Central administration of histamine suppresses food consumption, an effect largely mediated via H1R. The blockade of H1R has b

Trousseau syndrome with recurrent cerebral infarction as the first oneset in a gastrointestinal malignant tumor patient: A case report.

RATIONALE: Trousseau syndrome (TS) is a thrombosis disorder characterized by a hypercoagulable state linked to underlying malignancies, resulting in various thrombotic events such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and arterial thrombosis. This syndrome serves as a crucial indicator of malignancy and can often be the first sign of an underlying tumor. In this case, we report a case of gastrointestinal malignant tumor as the first onset, and analyzes its clinical characteristics to improve the clinicians' understanding of this kind of disease. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 69-year-old woman wa

Current treatment of vestibular, ocular motor disorders and nystagmus.

Vertigo and dizziness are among the most common complaints with a lifetime prevalence of about 30%. The various forms of vestibular disorders can be treated with pharmacological therapy, physical therapy, psychotherapeutic measures or, rarely, surgery. In this review, the current pharmacological treatment options for peripheral and central vestibular, cerebellar and ocular motor disorders will be described. They are as follows for peripheral vestibular disorders. In vestibular neuritis recovery of the peripheral vestibular function can be improved by treatment with oral corticosteroids. In Men

Atypical posterior canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo mimicking anterior canal involvement: a case series and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo most commonly affects the posterior semicircular canal, producing upbeat-torsional nystagmus during positional testing. An apogeotropic variant of posterior semicircular canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo may present with downbeat-torsional nystagmus, thereby mimicking anterior canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and potentially leading to misdiagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case series of 14 patients (mean age 56.2 years; 10 females, 4 males; all of Kosovar ethnicity) presenting with positional downbeat nystagmus sugges
