Examination of judgments of drunkenness, binge drinking, and drunk-driving tendencies in teens with and without a family history of alcohol abuse.

BACKGROUND: The present study examined judgment processes of individuals with and without a family history of alcohol abuse. Despite the alarming statistics involving alcohol-related consequences in this population, very little is known about what judgment processes they use or how beneficial these processes are at preventing intoxication and alcohol-related consequences. METHODS: Participants were 270 individuals, 16-18 years old, screened on the basis of the history of family alcohol abuse. Individuals were asked to (1) make judgments of drunkenness in relation to the legal limits in respon

Suppression of splenic natural killer cell activity in a mouse model for binge drinking. II. Role of the neuroendocrine system.

Ethanol (EtOH) suppresses natural killer (NK) cell activity in the spleen in a binge drinking model in mice. Direct effects of EtOH and its metabolites are not the major cause of this suppression. In this study, the role of catecholamines, glucocorticoids and opioids in EtOH-induced suppression of NK cell activity in mice was evaluated. In addition, the role of GABA-A receptors was examined. The catecholamine antagonists phentolamine, nadolol and propranolol (delivered by a timed-release pellet) respectively exacerbated, partially blocked and had no effect on EtOH-induced suppression of NK cel

Prospective and cross-sectional associations between affect, and frequency of alcohol use and binge drinking episodes in rural black men.

BACKGROUND: Black men may be especially prone to drinking-to-cope or drinking to alleviate negative affect in early adulthood due to a unique confluence of factors that impact drinking patterns in emerging and early adulthood. The current study examined these associations using a prospective longitudinal design among Black men in rural Georgia. We hypothesized that across time, increases in depression would be associated with decreases in state hope and perceived life chances. Similarly, we anticipated increases in depression and decreases in state hope and perceived life chances would be asso

Sex- and ALDH2-dependent differences in alcohol metabolism and psychomotor performance: a study in Han Chinese adults after binge drinking.

BACKGROUND: Psychomotor impairments due to alcohol consumption may lead to a series of negative consequences. However, the influence of sex and ALDH2 polymorphism on psychomotor dysfunction has not yet been investigated. METHODS: One-hundred and three participants, genotyped for ALDH2 rs671, were administered a dose of 1.0 g/kg of white spirits. The blood ethanol concentration (BEC) and acetaldehyde concentration (BAAC) were measured at specific time intervals before and after alcohol consumption. Additionally, auditory simple reaction time (ASRT), visual choice reaction time (VCRT), pursuit

Histone deacetylases inhibitor trichostatin A reverses anxiety-like symptoms and memory impairments induced by maternal binge alcohol drinking in mice.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol exposure during development has detrimental effects, including a wide range of physical, cognitive and neurobehavioural anomalies known as foetal alcohol spectrum disorders. However, alcohol consumption among pregnant woman is an ongoing latent health problem. AIM: In the present study, the effects of trichostatin A (TSA) on emotional and cognitive impairments caused by prenatal and lactational alcohol exposure were assessed. TSA is an inhibitor of class I and II histone deacetylases enzymes (HDAC), and for that, HDAC4 activity was determined. We also evaluated mechanisms

Low doses of methylmercury intoxication solely or associated to ethanol binge drinking induce psychiatric-like disorders in adolescent female rats.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is an environmental contaminant that provokes damage to developing brain. Simultaneously, the consumption of ethanol among adolescents has increased. Evidence concerning the effects of MeHg low doses per se or associated with ethanol during adolescence are scarce. Thus, we investigate behavioral disorders resulted from exposure to MeHg low doses and co-intoxicated with ethanol in adolescent rats. Wistar rats received chronic exposure to low doses of MeHg (40 μg/kg/day for 5 weeks) and/or ethanol binge drinking (3 g/kg/day at 3 days per week for 5 weeks). Animals were submi

Altered white matter integrity in whole brain and segments of corpus callosum, in young social drinkers with binge drinking pattern.

Binge drinking is associated with impaired cognitive functioning, but the relationship of cognitive impairments and white matter integrity is less known. We used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to investigate the relationships of binge drinking, whole brain white matter integrity and cognitive performance during young adulthood (18 to 25 years), a period of continued brain development in two sessions 1 year apart. Binge drinkers (n = 20) and non-binge drinkers (n = 20) underwent DTI and completed measures of spatial working memory and motor impulsivity. Fractional anisotropy (FA), a measure der

Pharmacological characterization of the 20% alcohol intermittent access model in Sardinian alcohol-preferring rats: a model of binge-like drinking.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking is defined as a pattern of alcohol drinking that brings blood alcohol levels to 80 mg/dl or above. In this study, we pharmacologically characterized the intermittent access to 20% ethanol (EtOH) model (Wise, Psychopharmacologia 1973;29:203) in Sardinian alcohol-preferring (sP) rats to determine to which of the compounds known to reduce drinking in specific animal models this binge-like drinking was sensitive to. METHODS: Adult male sP rats were divided into 2 groups and allowed to drink either 20% v/v alcohol or water for 24 hours on alternate days (Monday, Wednesda

Effects of naltrexone, duloxetine, and a corticotropin-releasing factor type 1 receptor antagonist on binge-like alcohol drinking in rats.

A 'binge' is defined by National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism as an excessive pattern of alcohol drinking that produces blood-alcohol levels (BALs) greater than 0.08 g% within a 2-h period and may or may not be associated with dependence. The purpose of this investigation was to explore the effects of several neuropharmacological agents in an animal model in which outbred rats voluntarily and orally self-administer pharmacologically meaningful alcohol doses that produce BALs >or=0.08 g% in daily limited access two-bottle choice and operant drinking sessions. Rats were trained to s

Posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, antibisexual stigma, and alcohol use and binge drinking among young bisexual+ women who experienced sexual violence.

OBJECTIVE: We examined whether posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms related to sexual violence and antibisexual stigma were associated with alcohol use as a way to cope among bisexual and other multigender-attracted (i.e., bisexual+) women. METHOD: The sample included 113 cisgender bisexual+ women (Mage = 22.17, range = 18-25; 85.8% White) who reported adult sexual violence and alcohol use at baseline. Past-month alcohol use was assessed at 1-month, 2-month, and 3-month follow-up. Multilevel models tested indirect effects of PTSD symptoms and antibisexual stigma on alcohol use (i.e.,

Acute effects of binge drinking following aerobic exercise on autonomic and hemodynamic recovery in young men: a randomized crossover trial.

PURPOSE: Impaired autonomic and hemodynamic recovery after acute aerobic exercise is linked to greater susceptibility to sudden cardiovascular events. Binge drinking can increase cardiovascular risk, partly through elevations in heart rate, blood pressure, and sympathetic activity, yet alcohol is commonly consumed after exercise. We tested whether binge drinking after acute aerobic exercise delays autonomic and hemodynamic recovery in young men. METHODS: In a randomized crossover design, 14 young men (mean age 25 years; body mass index 25.1 kg/m2) completed a 30-min treadmill run at 55-60% of

Ethanol Self-Administration Reduces mGlu2/3 Protein Expression Specifically in the Nucleus Accumbens and mGlu2/3 Activation Suppresses Binge Drinking.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder is associated with dysregulated glutamatergic signaling within mesocorticolimbic circuits that govern reinforcement and excessive ethanol intake. Group II metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGlu2/3) act primarily as presynaptic autoreceptors that regulate glutamate release. However, how voluntary alcohol intake alters mGlu2/3 expression within reward circuitry remains unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined the effects of operant alcohol self-administration on mGlu2/3 protein expression and assessed the functional impact of group II receptor modulation on bin
