Identification of Sulfur-Containing Chlorinated Paraffin Structural Analogues in Human Serum: Origination from Biotransformation or Bioaccumulation?

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are manufactured and used in high quantities and have diverse structural analogues. It is generally recognized that sulfur-containing structural analogues of CPs are mainly derived from sulfate-conjugated phase II metabolism. In this study, we non-targeted identified three classes of sulfur-containing CP structural analogues (CPs-S) in human serum, including 44 CP sulfates (CPs-SO4H/CPs-SO4H-OH), 14 chlorinated benzene sulfates (CBs-SO4H), and 19 CP sulfite esters (CPs-SO3/CPs-S2O6), which were generated during the production of commercial mixtures of CPs and, thus,

Effects of water quality on palladium-induced olfactory toxicity and bioaccumulation in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Through emission processes, palladium (Pd) particulates from industrial sources are introduced into a range of ecosystems including freshwater environments. Despite this, research on Pd-induced bioaccumulation, uptake, and toxicity is limited for freshwater fishes. Unlike other metals, there are currently no regulations or protective guidelines to limit Pd release into aquatic systems, indicating a global absence of measures addressing its environmental impact. To assess the olfactory toxicity potential of Pd, the present study aimed to explore Pd accumulation in olfactory tissues, olfactory d

Bioaccumulation and thyroid endcrione disruption of 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate at environmental concentration in zebrafish larvae.

2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP) strongly binds to transthyretin (TTR) and affects the expression of genes involved in the thyroid hormone (TH) pathway in vitro. However, it is still unknown whether EHDPP induces endocrine disruption of THs in vivo. In this study, zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos (< 2 h post-fertilization (hpf)) were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of EHDPP (0, 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 μg·L-1) for 120 h. EHDPP was detected in 120 hpf larvae at concentrations of 0.06, 0.15, 3.71, and 59.77 μg·g-1 dry weight in the 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 μg·L-1 exposure groups,

Investigating the bioaccumulation potential of anionic organic compounds using a permanent rainbow trout liver cell line.

Permanent rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) cell lines represent potential in vitro alternatives to experiments with fish. We here developed a method to assess the bioaccumulation potential of anionic organic compounds in fish, using the rainbow trout liver-derived RTL-W1 cell line. Based on the availability of high quality in vivo bioconcentration (BCF) and biomagnification (BMF) data and the substances' charge state at physiological pH, four anionic compounds were selected: pentachlorophenol (PCP), diclofenac (DCF), tecloftalam (TT) and benzotriazol-tert-butyl-hydroxyl-phenyl propanoic aci

Enantioselective bioaccumulation, oxidative stress, and thyroid disruption assessment of cis-metconazole enantiomers in zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Chiral triazole pesticides may cause enantioselectively adverse effects to non-target organisms. In this work, we employed zebrafish as an aquatic organism model to explore stereoselective acute toxicity, bioaccumulation, oxidative stress, and thyroid disruption of cis-metconazole enantiomers. The median lethal concentration values of (1S, 5R)-metconazole, (1R, 5S)-metconazole, and the mixture of them against zebrafish were 4.01, 2.61 and 3.17 mg⋅L-1, respectively. (1R, 5S)-Metconazole was preferentially bioaccumulated in zebrafish than (1S, 5R)-metconazole, and the bioconcentration factor of

Biochar affects methylmercury production and bioaccumulation in paddy soils: Insights from soil-derived dissolved organic matter.

Biochar has been used increasingly as a soil additive to control mercury (Hg) pollution in paddy rice fields. As the most active component of soil organic matter, soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a vital role in the environmental fate of contaminants. However, there are very few studies to determine the impact of biochar on the Hg cycle in rice paddies using insights from DOM. This study used original and modified biochar to investigate their effect on DOM dynamics and their potential impact on methylmercury (MeHg) production and bioaccumulation in rice plants. Porewater DOM was colle

Low-dose cadmium stress increases the bioaccumulation and toxicity of dinotefuran enantiomers in zebrafish (Danio rerio)?

Co-occurrence of pesticides and heavy metals has attracted extensive attention. The enantioselective behaviors of dinotefuran to aquatic organisms have not been reported, and the effects of cadmium (Cd) was absent, which were investigated in this study at environmentally relevant concentrations. The enantioselective accumulation and elimination of dinotefuran enantiomers were observed in zebrafish, and it had tissue specificity. The S-dinotefuran concentrations were higher than R-dinotefuran in heads and viscera, but it was opposite in muscles. There existed competition between S-dinotefuran a

Bioaccumulation of antibiotics in crops under long-term manure application: Occurrence, biomass response and human exposure.

Long-term manure application gives rise to the uptake of antibiotics by plants and antibiotics subsequent entry into the food chain, representing an important alternative pathway for human exposure to antibiotics. The antibiotics can cause negative effects on crop growth and productivity. The bioaccumulation and translocation of 14 target antibiotics in peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L.) and their effects on peanut relative biomass in fields with long-term (≥15 years) manure application were studied. The results showed that all the target antibiotics were found in manures and rhizosphere soils, and

Laboratory Scale Microbial Food Chain To Study Bioaccumulation, Biomagnification, and Ecotoxicity of Cadmium Telluride Quantum Dots.

The increasing applications of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) in consumer products warrant a careful evaluation of their trophic transfer and consequent ecological impact. In the present study, a laboratory scale aquatic microbial food chain was established using bacteria (Escherichia coli (E. coli)) as a prey and ciliated protozoan (Paramecium caudatum) as a predator organism to determine the impact of cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs). We observed that 29% of bacterivory potential of paramecium was lost, including an ∼12 h delay in doubling time on exposure to 25 mg/L CdTe QD (∼4 nm

Mercury and methyl mercury in fishes from Bacajá River (Brazilian Amazon): evidence for bioaccumulation and biomagnification.

This study assessed total mercury (THg) and methyl mercury (MeHg) concentrations, bioaccumulation and biomagnification of THg through the food web in fishes consumed by indigenous communities of Bacajá River, the largest tributary of the right bank of Xingu River. In total, 496 fish (22 species) were sampled. Nine species had THg concentrations above the limit recommended by the World Health Organisation (0·5 µg g(-1) wet mass), and one exceeded the recommended level for Hg in predatory fishes by Brazilian law (1·0 µg g(-1) ). The average concentration of THg increased significantly with troph

Multiscale distribution and bioaccumulation analysis of clofazimine reveals a massive immune system-mediated xenobiotic sequestration response.

Chronic exposure to some well-absorbed but slowly eliminated xenobiotics can lead to their bioaccumulation in living organisms. Here, we studied the bioaccumulation and distribution of clofazimine, a riminophenazine antibiotic used to treat mycobacterial infection. Using mice as a model organism, we performed a multiscale, quantitative analysis to reveal the sites of clofazimine bioaccumulation during chronic, long-term exposure. Remarkably, between 3 and 8 weeks of dietary administration, clofazimine massively redistributed from adipose tissue to liver and spleen. During this time, clofazimin

Determination of the parameters in the Freundlich function using a modified method in the case of the bioaccumulation factor of Populus tremula.

This study proposes a modified coefficient-estimation approach for the Freundlich function to model soil-to-leaf element transfer without relying on conventional logarithmic linearization. For this purpose, the leaf uptake capability of European aspen (Populus tremula L.), which grows abundantly in the Avliyana (Torul) region of Gümüşhane Province, one of Türkiye's significant metallogenic zones, was investigated using this modified coefficient-estimation approach. This region has undergone hydrothermal alteration and ore mineralization, resulting in elevated concentrations of heavy metals com

Co-exposure of mercury and microplastics in aquatic food webs: A review of sources, bioaccumulation, and ecotoxicological risks.

The intensification of anthropogenic activities has led to the widespread release of micropollutants, including mercury (Hg), into aquatic environments. Mercury is a persistent and hazardous contaminant with severe ecological and human health implications. Previous reviews have primarily examined mercury or microplastics (MPs) in isolation, but the novelty of this study lies in its focus on their co-exposure and combined impacts within aquatic food webs. Specifically, this review addresses the central research question: how do mercury and microplastics jointly influence bioaccumulation and eco

Interactive effects of nitrite and bifenthrin on bioaccumulation, oxidative stress and immune responses of Haliotis discus hannai.

Nitrite (NO2-) and bifenthrin (BF), common environmental pollutant, have been proven to perform toxic effects on marine organisms. To have a better understanding of their effects on marine organism, Haliotis discus hannai was exposed to 0.1 mg/L NO2- and/or 10 μg/L BF for 28 days. The results showed that the gills in direct contact with the water environment exhibited the highest levels of BF bioaccumulation (89.37-142.36 μg/kg), especially after NO2- exposure (P < 0.05). Transcriptome analysis of gills showed that significant enrichments were observed in metabolic, signaling and immune pathwa

Arsenic, cadmium, and chromium concentrations in contrasting phosphate fertilizers and their bioaccumulation by crops: Towards a green label?

Potentially toxic elements such as arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr) are severely regulated in fertilizers and deserve continuous investigation. Phosphate-derived Cd has been a stepping-stone toward achieving sustainable and safe worldwide food production, especially after a new regulation aiming for reduced limits of Cd in P fertilizers (EU, 2019/1009). Three pot experiments were conducted to assess the variability of As, Cd, and Cr concentrations - with a particular focus on Cd - from monoammonium phosphates (MAP 1, MAP 2, and MAP 3 from different geographic origins) and their ac

Precautions for seafood consumers: An updated review of toxicity, bioaccumulation, and rapid detection methods of marine biotoxins.

Seafood products are globally consumed, and there is an increasing demand for the quality and safety of these products among consumers. Some seafoods are easily contaminated by marine biotoxins in natural environments or cultured farming processes. When humans ingest different toxins accumulated in seafood, they may exhibit different poisoning symptoms. According to the investigations, marine toxins produced by harmful algal blooms and various other marine organisms mainly accumulate in the body organs such as liver and digestive tract of seafood animals. Several regions around the world have
