Zinc and intestinal function.

Zinc is an abundant trace element in the human body that is essential for growth and development and immune function. It is important for the formation of biomembranes and zinc finger motifs found in DNA transcription factors and has catalytic function in metalloenzymes. The intestine is the site of zinc absorption and the major route of zinc excretion. Dietary inadequacy or conditions that decrease zinc absorption or increase its losses from the gastrointestinal tract, urine, or skin may quickly cause zinc deficiency due to the limited availability of rapidly exchangeable zinc pools in the bo

Isolation of monoferric phytate from wheat bran and its biological value as an iron source to the rat.

The objectives of the study were to isolate and chemically characterize the iron in wheat and to determine the biological availability to the rat of the iron as the purified complex(es). Hard wheat bran contained no butanol extractable or water extractable iron, but approximately 60% of the iron was extracted by 1 to 1.2 M NaCl or ammonium acetate solution. This salt extractable iron complex was purified and identified as monoferric phytate. The purified monoferric phytate was soluble in water. Synthetic monoferric phytate was prepared from sodium phytate and ferric chloride and determined to

Advances in cereal-derived ferulic acid: Sources, extraction, purification, metabolism, and applications in the food industry.

Ferulic acid is an abundant hydroxycinnamic acid covalently bound with cereal cell wall matrices, representing a valuable natural phenolic compound known for its antioxidant capacity and potential biological activities. However, complex crosslinked structures with cereal matrices severely restrict its efficient release and extraction. Moreover, the biological effects of cereal-derived FA are influenced by its release from food matrices, gastrointestinal availability, and subsequent microbial transformation. In this review, we summarize the major cereal sources and recent advances in extraction

Phytochemical-Primed Extracellular Vesicles and Plant-Derived Exosome-Like Nanoparticles as Endogenous Nanomedicine Platforms.

The mismatch between the low oral bioavailability of many phytochemicals and their broad systemic efficacy remains a central challenge for natural-product pharmacology and nanomedicine. Rather than relying solely on direct drug-target interactions at distant tissues, accumulating evidence suggests that phytochemicals can act at primary interfaces such as the intestinal epithelium, liver, tumor stroma, and immune microenvironment to alter EV biogenesis or cargo in selected models, while effects on tissue homing remain largely proposed. In this review, we discuss these findings from a vesicle-en

Fabrication and characterization of whey protein-sodium alginate-based emulsion gel beads and their controlled release of curcumin.

The poor stability and low bioavailability of curcumin (CUR) have limited its application in the food industry. The incorporation of hydrophobic compounds into emulsion gels has been shown to enhance their stability and facilitate controlled release from the matrix. Therefore, this study aims to encapsulate CUR in sodium alginate (ALG)-whey protein (WPI)-based emulsion gels to improve its stability and bioavailability. In this study, gel beads were prepared by the oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by ALG and WPI for effective delivery of CUR. The addition of ALG increased the apparent viscosit

Effect of blueberries on non-heme iron absorption in adult women.

Iron deficiency, the leading cause of anemia, can be exacerbated by dietary inhibitors such as polyphenols in fruits and vegetables. Despite their high polyphenol content, blueberries contain antioxidant compounds such as ascorbic acid and carotenoids, which are known to enhance iron absorption. This study aims to assess the net effect of blueberry consumption on non-heme iron absorption in healthy, non-menopausal women. Fourteen women aged 38-50 years, with contraception and a negative pregnancy test, participated in the study. After overnight fasting, the subjects were administered iron with

Health risk assessment of dietary cadmium exposure based on cadmium bioavailability in food: Opportunities and challenges.

Long-term exposure to Cd through contaminated food can lead to multiple adverse health effects on humans. Although previous studies have covered global food Cd concentrations and dietary Cd exposures across different populations, there are increasing concerns regarding the adequacy of current food Cd safety standards to protect populations from adverse health effects. Moreover, incorporation of Cd relative bioavailability (Cd-RBA) in foods improves the accuracy of health risk assessment. However, factors influencing food Cd-RBA have not been systematically discussed, thereby hindering its appl

Enhancing Bioavailability: Advances in Oral Isotretinoin Formulations.

Oral isotretinoin continues to be unsurpassed in efficacy for acne. However, it is associated with potential adverse events including risk of fetal defects, necessitating appropriate mitigation strategies. Furthermore, the variance in bioavailability of the original formulation when ingested in fed versus fasted conditions can lead to differences in daily dosing and duration of exposure. Advances in formulation, with lidose encapsulation and subsequently with micronization, have led to iterative improvements in reducing bioavailability variation between fed and fasted conditions. Differences i

The Current and Promising Oral Delivery Methods for Protein- and Peptide-Based Drugs.

Drugs based on peptides and proteins (PPs) have been widely used in medicine, beginning with insulin therapy in patients with diabetes mellitus over a century ago. Although the oral route of drug administration is the preferred one by the vast majority of patients and improves compliance, medications of this kind due to their specific chemical structure are typically delivered parenterally, which ensures optimal bioavailability. In order to overcome issues connected with oral absorption of PPs such as their instability depending on digestive enzymes and pH changes in the gastrointestinal (GI)

Cold plasma treatment with alginate oligosaccharide improves the digestive stability and bioavailability of nutrient-delivered particles: An in vitro INFOGEST gastrointestinal study.

To improve the stability and bioavailability of the delivered hydrophobic nutrients, the zein-based delivery system was modified by alginate oligosaccharide (AOS), cold plasma (CP) treatments, and synergistically. The digestive behavior of each was investigated in an INFOGEST static in vitro digestion model. The results showed that AOS and CP treatments and their synergistic effects improved the dispersion and stability of the delivery system, leading to a more concentrated particle size distribution and higher particle surface charge. Both CP treatments and AOS increased the release rate of C

Iron bioavailability regulates Pseudomonas aeruginosa interspecies interactions through type VI secretion expression.

The cystic fibrosis (CF) respiratory tract harbors pathogenic bacteria that cause life-threatening chronic infections. Of these, Pseudomonas aeruginosa becomes increasingly dominant with age and is associated with worsening lung function and declining microbial diversity. We aimed to understand why P. aeruginosa dominates over other pathogens to cause worsening disease. Here, we show that P. aeruginosa responds to dynamic changes in iron concentration, often associated with viral infection and pulmonary exacerbations, to become more competitive via expression of the TseT toxic effector. Howeve
