Recent studies on regulation of gastric motility in turkeys.

Recent studies have been aimed at determining how gastroduodenal contractions are initiated and at regulation of the stomach during the intestinal phase of gastric regulation. Intrinsic, myogenic, electrical slow waves, the principal regulators of motility in the mammalian gut, have not been found in the avian gut. Instead, contractions appear to be initiated by a neurogenic pacemaker located between the gastric isthmus and the pylorus. Pacemaker impulses travel over the myenteric plexus to the glandular stomach and the duodenum, and to the muscles of the muscular stomach to initiate contracti

Timing Is Important-Management of Metabolic Syndrome According to the Circadian Rhythm.

Physiological processes occur in accordance with a rhythm regulated by the endogenous biological clock. This clock is programmed at the molecular level and synchronized with the daily light-dark cycle, as well as activities such as feeding, exercise, and social interactions. It consists of the core clock genes, Circadian Locomotor Output Cycles Protein Kaput (CLOCK) and Brain and Muscle Arnt-Like protein 1 (BMAL1), and their products, the period (PER) and cryptochrome (CRY) proteins, as well as an interlocked feedback loop which includes reverse-strand avian erythroblastic leukemia (ERBA) onco

Circadian misalignment and low-grade inflammation: Failure of temporal gating by the molecular clock.

Circadian misalignment, from shift work, recurrent sleep-wake disruption, or mistimed behavioral rhythms, tracks with cardiometabolic disease and low-grade systemic inflammation, yet no single account ties the molecular, animal, and human evidence together. This narrative review reads that evidence through one idea: temporal gating of innate immunity by the molecular clock. Clock components, chiefly REV-ERBα and BMAL1, confine NF-κB and NLRP3 inflammasome activity to defined circadian windows through transcriptional and metabolic routes. Misalignment then amounts to internal phase dissociation

Light at night alters daily patterns of cortisol and clock proteins in female Siberian hamsters.

Humans and other organisms have adapted to a 24-h solar cycle in response to life on Earth. The rotation of the planet on its axis and its revolution around the sun cause predictable daily and seasonal patterns in day length. To successfully anticipate and adapt to these patterns in the environment, a variety of biological processes oscillate with a daily rhythm of approximately 24 h in length. These rhythms arise from hierarchally-coupled cellular clocks generated by positive and negative transcription factors of core circadian clock gene expression. From these endogenous cellular clocks, ove

[Sleep and circadian rhythms in ageing].

With age, the consolidation of nocturnal sleep decreases, daytime napping increases, and sleep occurs earlier. Sleep regulation is dependent on the interaction between a circadian pacemaker (biological clock) and the sleep homeostat (sleep pressure increasing with duration of time awake). We have shown that in the healthy elderly, the amplitude of circadian rhythms (e. g. melatonin secretion) declines, as does slow wave sleep, parallel with an increase in afternoon sleepiness and a tendency to fall asleep in the early evening when younger subjects do not. Light is the major zeitgeber to stabil

Exploring the connection between the Mitochondrial DNA and the Circadian Rhythm: Insights into Mitochondrial Biogenesis and its Dynamics.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), inherited exclusively from the mother, encodes genes essential for mitochondrial function, including oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), which generates ATP, the cell's primary energy currency. Circadian rhythm is a crucial biological system that refers to the innate biological clock, whose core is in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the brain. This nucleus regulates various physiological processes, such as sleep-wake cycles, hormone secretion, cellular repair, energy homeostasis, and metabolism, on a roughly 24-hour cycle. Peripheral clocks exist in various tiss

Comparative study of pineal clock gene and AANAT2 expression in relation to melatonin synthesis in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax).

The photoreceptive teleost pineal is considered to be essential to the generation, synchronisation and maintenance of biological rhythms, primarily via melatonin release. The role of internal (circadian clock) and external (light) signals controlling melatonin production in the fish pineal differs between species, yet the reasons underpinning this remain largely unknown. Whilst in salmonids, pineal melatonin is apparently regulated directly by light, in all other studied teleosts, rhythmic melatonin production persists endogenously under the regulation of clock gene expression. To better under

Endogenous rhythmicity of Bmal1 and Rev-erb alpha in the hamster pineal gland is not driven by norepinephrine.

Pineal melatonin is synthesized with daily and seasonal rhythms following the hypothalamic clock-driven release of norepinephrine (NE). The pineal gland of rats and mice, like the biological clock, expresses a number of clock genes. However, the role of pineal clock elements in pineal physiology is still unknown. We examined the expression and regulation of several clock genes (Per1, Cry2, Bmal1 and Rev-erb alpha) under different lighting conditions or following adrenergic treatments in the Syrian hamster, a seasonal rodent. We found that Per1 and Cry2 genes were similarly regulated by the noc

Externally Regulated Programmed Aging and Effects of Population Stress on Mammal Lifespan.

Programmed (adaptive) aging refers to the idea that mammals, including humans and other complex organisms, have evolved mechanisms that purposely cause or allow senescence or otherwise internally limit their lifespans in order to obtain an evolutionary advantage. Until recently, programmed aging had been thought to be theoretically impossible because of the mechanics of the evolution process. However, there is now substantial theoretical and empirical support for the existence of programmed aging in mammals. Therefore, a comprehensive approach to medical research on aging and age-related disea

Period1 mediates rhythmic metabolism of toxins by interacting with CYP2E1.

The biological clock is an endogenous biological timing system, which controls metabolic functions in almost all organs. Nutrient metabolism, substrate processing, and detoxification are circadian controlled in livers. However, how the clock genes respond to toxins and influence toxicity keeps unclear. We identified the clock gene Per1 was specifically elevated in mice exposed to toxins such as carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). Mice lacking Per1 slowed down the metabolic rate of toxins including CCl4, capsaicin, and acetaminophen, exhibiting relatively more residues in the plasma. Liver injury and

Daily expression of six clock genes in central and peripheral tissues of a night-migratory songbird: evidence for tissue-specific circadian timing.

In birds, independent circadian clocks reside in the retina, pineal, and hypothalamus, which interact with each other and produce circadian time at the functional level. However, less is known of the molecular clockwork, and of the integration between central and peripheral clocks in birds. The present study investigated this, by monitoring the timed expression of five core clock genes (Per2. Cry1. Cry2. Bmal1, and Clock) and one clock-controlled gene (E4bp4) in a night-migratory songbird, the redheaded bunting (rb; Emberiza bruniceps). The authors first partially cloned these six genes, and t

Extracellular vesicles and epigenetic aging clocks in tissue aging: an exosome-focused conceptual framework with a focus on skin.

Tissue aging is a multifactorial process characterized by cellular senescence, disrupted intercellular communication, and epigenetic alterations, with skin providing a clinically accessible and biologically informative model system. Exosomes and other extracellular vesicles (EVs) are increasingly recognized as mediators of aging-related signaling, whereas DNA methylation-based aging clocks offer quantitative measures of biological age. In this narrative review, we examine the potential interplay between EV/exosome biology and epigenetic aging clocks across tissue-aging contexts, while using sk

Vitamin A status is associated with sleep, clock genes, and symptoms in children with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A signals through retinoic acid receptors and may influence neurodevelopment and the expression of clock genes. However, the biological pathway linking vitamin A status to sleep disturbance in ASD remains insufficiently defined. This study aimed to examine associations between vitamin A status and sleep problems, core symptoms, and clock genes in children with ASD, and to explore the mechanistic role of RARβ in regulating core clock genes. METHODS: This observational study included 361 children with ASD. Clinical symptoms were assessed using the Children's Sleep Habits Que

The BHARAT study: a multi-modal, multi-omics investigation of aging signatures in the Indian population.

India is undergoing a rapid demographic transition, with its elderly population projected to exceed 347 million by 2050. Although aging is the primary risk factor for multiple chronic diseases, most biological age (BA) models have been developed for Western populations, with limited applicability to Indian demographics. The BHARAT study (Biomarkers of Healthy Aging, Resilience, Adversity, and Transitions) aims to develop and validate composite signatures of aging in the Indian population by integrating multi-omics, biochemical, clinical, and lifestyle data. The BHARAT study is a multi-center,

Epigenetic age acceleration and mortality risk prediction in US adults.

Epigenetic clocks have emerged as novel measures of biological aging and potential predictors of mortality. We examined all-cause, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality prediction by epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) estimated using different epigenetic clocks. Among 2105 participants to the 1999-2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey aged ≥ 50 years old and followed for mortality through 2019, we calculated EAAs from the residuals of nine epigenetic clocks regressed on chronological age. We assessed the association of EAAs and pace of aging with mortality adjusting for covariate

Epigenetic age acceleration is associated with oligodendrocyte proportions in MSA and control brain tissue.

AIMS: Epigenetic clocks are widely applied as surrogates for biological age in different tissues and/or diseases, including several neurodegenerative diseases. Despite white matter (WM) changes often being observed in neurodegenerative diseases, no study has investigated epigenetic ageing in white matter. METHODS: We analysed the performances of two DNA methylation-based clocks, DNAmClockMulti and DNAmClockCortical , in post-mortem WM tissue from multiple subcortical regions and the cerebellum, and in oligodendrocyte-enriched nuclei. We also examined epigenetic ageing in control and multiple

Melatonin synthesis and clock gene regulation in the pineal organ of teleost fish compared to mammals: Similarities and differences.

The pineal organ of all vertebrates synthesizes and secretes melatonin in a rhythmic manner due to the circadian rhythm in the activity of arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (AANAT) - the rate-limiting enzyme in melatonin synthesis pathway. Nighttime increase in AANAT activity and melatonin synthesis depends on increased expression of aanat gene (a clock-controlled gene) and/or post-translation modification of AANAT protein. In mammalian and avian species, only one aanat gene is expressed. However, three aanat genes (aanat1a, aanat1b, and aanat2) are reported in fish species. While aanat1a and

Epigenetic Age Acceleration as a Modifiable Public Health Target: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Environmental, Behavioral, and Social Determinants with Development of the MEAB-Index.

Chronological age is a poor indicator of interindividual differences in biological aging. DNA methylation-based epigenetic clocks provide a reliable measure of biological age and epigenetic age acceleration (EAA). Although modifiable behavioral, environmental, and social factors appear to influence EAA, the magnitude, consistency, and potential preventability of these associations have never been systematically quantified. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. PubMed/MEDLINE and Scopus were searched from inception to 7 April 2026 for English-langu

Biomarkers for Biological Aging in Postmenopausal Women.

Biological aging describes the cumulative decline in physiologic function that can differ from chronological age. Menopause marks a reproductive transition that may influence biological aging through loss of estrogen, changes in body composition, chronic inflammation, and epigenetic regulation. These pathways may contribute to heterogeneity in cardiovascular, skeletal, cognitive, and functional outcomes among postmenopausal women. Researchers use composite indices and molecular measures, including phenotypic age and DNA methylation or epigenetic clocks, to quantify these processes. However, av
