Efficacy of biological agents in juvenile idiopathic arthritis: a systematic review using indirect comparisons.

OBJECTIVE: Over the past decade, the availability of biological agents for the treatment of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) has increased substantially. Because direct head-to-head trials comparing these agents are lacking, we indirectly compared their efficacy. METHODS: In a systematic review, all available efficacy data from randomised controlled trials performed in JIA with inclusion of biological agents were retrieved. Indirect between-drug comparisons (based on Bucher's method) were conducted only if trials were comparable with regard to design and patients' characteristics related t

Effect of Sublethal Doses of Imidacloprid on the Biological Performance of Aphid Endoparasitoid Aphidius gifuensis (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) and Influence on Its Related Gene Expression.

The integrated pest management (IPM) strategy was developed and used in combination with pesticides and beneficial biological control agents. To further develop IPM efficiency, it is important to evaluate the side effects of pesticides on biological control agents. Aphidius gifuensis is one of the most important aphid natural enemies and has been successfully used to control Myzys persicae and other aphid species. Imidacloprid (IMD) is a popular pesticide used worldwide and is highly toxic to non-target arthropods. Here, we investigated the short-term sublethal toxicity of IMD in Aphidius gifu

Clinical outcomes after switching from omalizumab to anti-IL-5/IL-5R biologics in severe asthma: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Severe asthma (SA) is a heterogeneous disease composed of various clinical phenotypes, and criteria for selecting the most appropriate biological agent remain unclear. Therefore, when optimal control cannot be achieved with the initial biological therapy, switching between biological drugs is often performed. METHODS: This real-world study evaluated patients with severe asthma who initiated omalizumab treatment. Based on their treatment response, patients were divided into two groups: those who continued omalizumab and those who switched to mepolizumab or benralizumab. Clinical da

[Biologicals for children and adolescents in the treatment of rheumatic diseases].

Following pharmacolegal measures several biologic agents have been tested in children and adolescents with rheumatic diseases, mainly juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), in controlled trials and have been introduced into treatment algorithms. This was achieved by international research cooperation and after introduction of well-defined criteria for disease entities, disease activity, improvement and deterioration. Etanercept, adalimumab, abatacept, tocilizumab and canakinumab have obtained limited licenses. Etanercept is the longest available biologic agent. Etanercept or adalimumab are the t

"New drugs: kids come first": children should be included in trials of new biological treatments.

The advent of biological therapies has dramatically revolutionized the treatment options for refractory inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Of all the biologics evaluated to date, infliximab, an anti-tumor necrosis factor-alpha monoclonal chimeric antibody, has been shown to be an extremely potent drug for acute and maintenance treatment of both adult and pediatric patients with severe IBD, especially in those with Crohn's disease, whereas other biological agents are undergoing evaluation in several clinical trials. Although infliximab has preferentially been used as rescue therapy for IBD patie

Combined use of Beauveria bassiana and the predatory mite Neoseiulus californicus to suppress Tetranychus urticae on greenhouse-grown sweet pepper.

Predatory mites and invertebrate-pathogenic fungi are important biological control tools for managing populations of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, in horticultural field crops. Here, we evaluated strategies for the combined use of a mite-pathogenic strain of Beauveria bassiana and Neoseiulus californicus to suppress T. urticae populations on sweet pepper plants. First, we compared the performance of both biocontrol agents, applied alone or in combination, under greenhouse conditions. A decline in T. urticae populations was observed 7 days after the release of the predatory

Algal bioactive compounds for next-generation biopesticides: a multi-target resource for sustainable pest management.

The rapid growth in global population and the incessant demand for food warrant greater attention to sustainable agricultural practices. To ensure adequate food security, protection of crops from exposure to biotic agents (e.g., pathogens and insects) is imperative. Over the decades, synthetic pesticides have been used to control pests in agriculture. However, excessive and uncontrolled use of these chemical compounds causes serious environmental and health hazards. Therefore, algal biopesticides are used as biological agents to control soil-borne diseases and plant pests. The algae secrete a

Comparing the odds of reported depression in psoriasis patients on systemic therapy: a cross-sectional analysis of postmarketing data.

Patients with psoriasis are more likely to experience depression and suicidality compared to non-psoriatic patients, though systemic therapies have been shown to improve depressive symptoms. It is unclear whether or not biologic or oral agents are more effective at improving such depressive symptoms in psoriasis patients, however. We aimed to determine an estimate of the odds of incident depression in psoriasis patients on different systemic therapies by performing a cross-sectional analysis of postmarketing data. The reporting odds ratio (ROR) for 15 different systemic agents was calculated u

Design of a Bacteriophage-Based Product for Biocontrol of Fire Blight and Black Rot.

Controlling phytopathogenic bacteria is essential for safeguarding crops and minimizing economic losses in agriculture. Although chemical pesticides are effective, they have adverse effects on ecosystems, beneficial organisms such as pollinators, and natural pathogen predators, creating a need for sustainable alternatives. Bacteriophages ɸEF1 and ɸEF2 (infecting Erwinia amylovora, the fire blight pathogen), and ɸXF1 (targeting Xanthomonas campestris, the black rot pathogen) have shown promise as biocontrol agents in vitro and in vivo. However, to be effective in the field these phages must mai

Pseudomonas fluorescens from Lake Bogoria, Kenya: a promising biocontrol agent against Fusarium solani in Phaseolus vulgaris L.

Common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L) are an important staple crop valued for their high protein content and dietary benefits. However, Fusarium wilt, caused by Fusarium solani, is responsible for up to an 84% yield loss in bean production. This study aimed to isolate and evaluate novel Pseudomonas fluorescens from Lake Bogoria as potential biocontrol agents against F. solani. Using serial dilution, 30 bacterial isolates were obtained; 10 showed varied mycelial inhibition rates (5.95-42.86%) through dual culture and confrontation assays. Molecular identification using 16S rDNA confirmed that two

Advanced combination therapy: is it the best way to break the therapeutic ceiling?

Current therapeutic strategies for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have reached a plateau in the rates of response and/or remission achieved with a single therapeutic agent. Consequently, the advanced combination therapy (ACT) strategy has emerged as a novel treatment concept for IBD. ACT involves the use of two different targeted therapies, whether biologic or small molecules, with the primary goal of overcoming the therapeutic plateau. Real-world evidence is accumulating among patients undergoing ACT, especially those dealing with concurrent IBD and extraintestinal manifestations or grappli

Making waves: Intelligent phage cocktail design, a pathway to precise microbial control in water systems.

Current practices in water and wastewater treatment to control unwanted microbes have led to new problems, including health effects from disinfection byproducts, growth of opportunistic pathogens resistant to residual disinfectants (e.g., chlorine), and antibiotic resistance. These challenges are spurring interest in rethinking our practices of microbial control. Simultaneously, advances in molecular biology and computation power are driving renewed interest in using phages (viruses that infect bacteria) to precisely control microbial growth (aka, phage biocontrol). In this Making Waves articl
