Unlocking fast robotic locomotor propulsion through dynamic spine-leg synergy.

Quadrupeds in nature achieve agile locomotion through a rhythmic flexing of the spine in coordination with leg movement. This dynamic synergy enhances their speed and stability, reflecting a kind of physical intelligence encoded in their bodies. However, identifying this spine-leg synergy and embodying it in robotics to enhance locomotor propulsion remains challenging. To address this, we developed FLEXOR (fast legged robot with a flexible spine for optimal running), which uses dual-joint coupled spine and elastic legs to capture dynamic spine-leg synergy in rapid propulsion of small-scale qua

The effect of fatigue on kinetic and kinematic variables in individuals with flexible flatfoot during gait: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Flexible flatfoot is a prevalent musculoskeletal deformity characterized by partial or complete loss of the medial longitudinal arch. It can modify lower-limb kinematic and kinetic parameters during walking. Fatigue may further impair gait patterns, potentially aggravating the deformity and increasing injury susceptibility. However, despite substantial research on fatigue and flatfoot separately, integrative evidence on fatigue-related gait biomechanics in individuals with flexible flatfoot remains limited. METHODS: This study was conducted as a systematic review and meta-analysis

Achieving balance in tendon repair.

PURPOSE: Achieving balance in tendon repair is essential for restoring optimal function after tendon injuries, particularly in the hand and upper limb. We review and discuss key steps of 'balanced' flexor and extensor tendon repair and rehabilitation.Flexor and extensor tendon repair:To achieve optimal outcomes, the surgeon needs to consider the balance between mechanical strength and tendon gliding. Strong multi-strand repairs provide security against gapping and rupture, but overly tight or running epitenon sutures may impair synovial and blood supply to epitenon. Pulley venting in zone 2 is

Pilot Study on the Development and Assessment of a Novel Sensor for Measuring Rein Tension.

Effective horse-rider communication is essential in equestrian sports, both for performance and animal welfare. Rein tension, which is often applied through negative reinforcement (i.e., the release of pressure to reward a desired response), plays a central role in this interaction. However, high or inconsistent tension can lead to discomfort or injury, particularly in the mouth cavity. While previous studies have analyzed rein tension in basic gaits such as walk, trot, and canter, limited research exists on more complex maneuvers like jumping or abrupt stops. This pilot study introduces a cus

Adaptive multimodal swimming gaits in a reconfigurable modular soft robotic fish.

Fish swim with four main gaits-anguilliform, subcarangiform, carangiform, and thunniform-produced by waves along varying portions of the body. However, how muscle activation length influences swimming performance remains poorly understood. We present a reconfigurable robotic fish that replicates all four gaits in a single platform by rapidly tuning its body stiffness. Vacuum-driven layer jamming muscles in four tensegrity joints enable quick (≤1 s) stiffness modulation (stiffness ratio of 46.6) and gait switching. In thunniform gait, the robot reaches 1.24 body lengths per second, whereas in a

Editorial Commentary: Knee Hyperextension Injuries: What Are We Really Diagnosing and How to Solve the Problem?

Knee hyperextension injuries remain a poorly defined entity, often functioning more as a descriptive label than a true mechanistic diagnosis. Rather than representing isolated sagittal-plane events, these injuries reflect the final position of complex multiplanar loading patterns, resulting in highly variable structural damage that frequently extends beyond the cruciate ligaments. Emerging clinical observations suggest that patients with subtle hyperextension mechanisms may present with persistent pain and instability despite largely normal imaging and standard ligament testing. This highlight

Side-Shift Therapy as Translation-Dominant 3D Auto-Correction in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Clinical-Mathematical Framework for Stratified PSSE.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a three-dimensional deformity characterised by coronal curvature, axial rotation, and altered trunk translation. Radiographic indices (e.g., Cobb angle) quantify structure but incompletely represent functional correctability, a core target of physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercises (PSSE). Side-Shift Therapy (SST), originating from the RNOH tradition (Mehta, 1985) and operationalised via a mobility classification (Betts et al., 2014), is a voluntary lateral translation of the trunk relative to the pelvis (not a side-bend). This paper presents a b

Shell damage and mandible mechanics in the ant Messor wasmanni.

Ant middens represent accumulations of discarded materials and provide insight into colony-level foraging and processing behavior. While middens of granivorous ants are typically dominated by plant material, animal remains are occasionally present, yet their origin and mechanical basis remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the occurrence of gastropod shells in an external midden of the harvester ant Messor wasmanni and evaluated ant mandible mechanics to provide some background for shell fracturing. Midden material was collected during three sampling events and sorted by material typ

Error distribution and post hoc disturbance features in IMU-based hip joint angle estimation during complex movements.

Existing evaluations of IMU-based joint angle estimation mainly rely on global accuracy metrics, which may obscure local error exposure during complex functional movements. This study analyzed data from 16 healthy male participants in the Hip-ROM-Y dataset. Using leave-one-subject-out outputs from a unified left hip joint predictor, we characterized left hip angle estimation errors by movement category, normalized movement phase, and high-error segment. The relationship between error distribution and post hoc disturbance features was further examined. The results showed that, under the current

Biomechanical exploration of cushioning and stability in auxetic lattice midsoles during jump landing.

High-impact forces during jump landing pose a risk for lower limb injuries, highlighting the importance of shoe midsole cushioning, where the effectiveness of midsole hardness remains controversial. This study evaluated the biomechanical performance of three-dimensional auxetic lattice structure midsoles during jump landing, examining their cushioning mechanisms and stability. Four midsoles were tested: two auxetic lattices (A60 and A75), a non-auxetic structure (N90), and a traditional polyurethane (PU) midsole, using plantar pressure measurements (Pedar‑X system) and finite element simulatio

Update on the Physiopathology of Keratoconus.

Keratoconus (KC) is a progressive corneal ectasia characterized by stromal thinning, steepening, and biomechanical instability. Although historically considered primarily a structural disorder, current evidence supports a multifactorial pathogenesis involving complex interactions among biomechanical, molecular, cellular, inflammatory, neurobiological, and environmental mechanisms. This narrative review provides an updated overview of KC pathophysiology, integrating current evidence across these interconnected domains. Focal reductions in corneal stiffness, altered viscoelasticity, collagen dis

Biomechanical effects of human-mobility aid interaction: A narrative review.

BACKGROUND: The clinical benefits and widespread use of traditional mobility aids (such as canes, walking frames, wheeled walkers, etc.) have been hampered by improper use, fear of falling, and social stigma. Clarifying the biomechanical impacts of using mobility aids on users is fundamental to optimizing rehabilitation programs. RESEARCH QUESTION: What are the biomechanical consequences of human-aid interaction and what differences in variables exist across patients and devices? METHODS: English-language articles from 2000 to May 2024 were identified by searching Web of Science, PubMed, and

Human-Centered Geodesics for Motion Planning.

This paper addresses the challenge of designing human-like reference trajectories for exoskeleton-aided rehabilitation, with a focus on mimicking human joint coordination while addressing clinical requirements. Redundant kinematic chains in human biomechanics pose challenges to trajectory planning: state-of-the-art algorithms often do not explicitly address the problem of replicating natural movements nor do they provide a suitable performance over a wide range of human motions. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a geodesics-based computational method that incorporates joint-level

[Unveiling the pivotal role of corneal biomechanical parameters in glaucoma diagnosis and therapy].

Glaucoma stands as the leading cause of irreversible blindness globally, yet its pathogenesis remains incompletely understood. With the advancements in biomechanical detection technologies, in-vivo biomechanical research on the eyeball has become feasible. An increasing number of researchers have turned their attention to the intricate relationship between the biomechanical properties of the cornea and the onset and progression of glaucoma. This article delves into four crucial aspects: grasping the concepts and detection techniques of corneal biomechanics, exploring the correlation between co

Geometry of T1 transitions in epithelia.

The flows of tissues of epithelial cells often involve T1 transitions. These neighbor exchanges are irreversible rearrangements crossing an energy barrier. Here, by an exact geometric construction, I determine this energy barrier for general, isolated T1 transitions dominated by line tensions. I show how deviations from regular cell packing reduce this energy barrier, but find that line tension fluctuations increase it on average. By another exact construction, I prove that the nonlinear tensions in vertex models of tissues also resist T1 transitions. My results thus form the basis for coarse-

Material properties of the embryonic small intestine during buckling morphogenesis.

During embryonic development, tissues undergo dramatic deformations as functional morphologies are stereotypically sculpted from simple rudiments. Formation of healthy, functional organs therefore requires tight control over the material properties of embryonic tissues during development, yet the biological basis of embryonic tissue mechanics is poorly understood. The present study investigates the mechanics of the embryonic small intestine, a tissue that is compactly organized in the body cavity by a mechanical instability during development, wherein differential elongation rates between the

Endothelial cell stiffness and type drive the formation of biomechanically induced transcellular pores.

Formation of transcellular pores facilitates material transport across endothelial barriers. In Schlemm's canal (SC) endothelium, impaired pore formation is linked to glaucoma, but the underlying processes remain poorly understood due to a lack of in vitro assays. Here, we present a platform to study pore formation in human endothelial cells. Pores were induced in SC cells by seeding them atop micron-sized magnetic beads and applying a magnetic field to generate basal-to-apical forces, mimicking in vivo biomechanics. Pore formation was dynamic, with pores opening and closing. Glaucomatous cell

Effect of gait retraining in minimalist footwear or barefoot on running footstrike and cadence: a systematic review.

Gait retraining programs take a structured approach to altering a runner's gait, often with the goal of decreasing footstrike angle and increasing cadence, as these outcomes have been correlated to a reduced rate of injury and optimal performance. Minimalist footwear, or running barefoot entirely, has been explored as a tool for gait adjustment in runners, largely due to the increased feedback from ground forces experienced by the runner. This systematic review aims to decipher the effect of gait retraining with minimalist footwear or barefoot running on footstrike angle and cadence. The compa

Kinematic considerations for achieving the quadruple axel jump: comparison with triple axel jumps among world-class figure skaters using tracking data.

In figure skating, achieving higher scores often relies on the successful execution of difficult jumps, e.g., quadruple jumps. According to previous biomechanical studies, jump heights do not change significantly even with more rotational jumps. However, strategies employed by top skaters to acquire new jumps are unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate specific kinematic strategies used by skaters to perform the quadruple axel jump (4A), focusing on two skaters (skaters A and B) who attempted this jump in competitions. Using data from the Ice Scope tracking system, this study analy
