Are You Listening? Facilitation of the Auditory Blink Response in People with Fibromyalgia.

The purpose of the current study was to determine whether auditory prepulse inhibition (PPI) and/or prepulse facilitation (PPF) were altered in people with fibromyalgia (FM) when compared with controls. Eyeblink responses were recorded from 29 females with FM and 27 controls, while they listened to 3 blocks of auditory stimuli that delivered pulses with either PPI or PPF. Using a linear mixed model, our main findings were that there was a GROUP*CONDITION interaction (F4, 1084 = 4.01, P= .0031) indicating that the difference in amplitude between FM group and control group changed depending on t

Blink index as a response predictor of blepharospasm to botulinum neurotoxin-A treatment.

PURPOSE: We investigated the blink profiles and blink index using ocular surface interferometer in the patients with blepharospasm (BSP) and identified points to consider predictive factor after BSP treatment. METHODS: In total, 117 eyelids of 59 elderly patients and 20 eyelids of 10 age-matched control group were studied. All BSP patients applied botulinum toxin-A (BoNT-A) injection for treatment of BSP. An ocular surface interferometer (LipiView; TearScience, Morrisville, NC, USA) was used to measure blink profile and blink index; total and incomplete blinks/20 s, and the partial blink rati

Prepulse inhibition of the blink reflex is abnormal in functional movement disorders.

BACKGROUND: Patients with functional movement disorders also typically have functional somatic symptoms, including pain, fatigue, and sensory disturbance. A potentially unifying mechanism for such symptoms is a failure in processing of sensory inputs. Prepulse inhibition is a neurophysiological method that allows for the study of preconscious somatosensory processing. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess prepulse inhibition in patients with functional movement disorders and healthy control subjects. METHODS: We analyzed the effect of a weak electrical stimulus to the index fi

Seasonal variation of spontaneous blink rate and beta EEG activity.

Seasonal variations of the photoperiod have been shown to regulate biological and behavioral functions, with also effects on clinical symptom and course of several psychiatric conditions. Although melatonin is considered the principal signal used to transmit informations about the light and dark cycle, a dopamine (DA) role in regulating seasonal changes has been suggested. Few studies have addressed a seasonal pattern of dopamine, and human studies have been conducted on inter-subject differences, comparing measures obtained during fall-winter with those of spring-summer. We studied within-sub

Microsaccades and blinks trigger illusory rotation in the "rotating snakes" illusion.

Certain repetitive arrangements of luminance gradients elicit the perception of strong illusory motion. Among them, the "Rotating Snakes Illusion" has generated a large amount of interest in the visual neurosciences, as well as in the public. Prior evidence indicates that the Rotating Snakes illusion depends critically on eye movements, yet the specific eye movement types involved and their associated neural mechanisms remain controversial. According to recent reports, slow ocular drift--a nonsaccadic type of fixational eye movement--drives the illusion, whereas microsaccades produced during a

Experimental video analysis of eye blink reflex in a primate model.

BACKGROUND: The establishment of reliable methods for functional assessment in experimental models of peripheral nerve regeneration is crucial. METHODS: We present a straightforward method for video analysis of the eye blink reflex in a model of facial nerve damage in a nonhuman primate (Callithrix sp.). RESULTS: Our 6-level dynamic analysis demonstrated good reproducibility between independent observers, as measured by Cohen's kappa index. Our static analysis, which was based on 4 semiautomated metric parameters, showed low correlation during the early stage of facial movement recovery (the

Reduced attentional blink for gambling-related stimuli in problem gamblers.

Although there is considerable information concerning the attentional biases in psychoactive substance use and misuse, much less is known about the contribution of attentional processing in problem gambling. The aim of this study was to examine whether problem gamblers (PrG) exhibit attentional bias at the level of the encoding processing stage. Forty PrG and 35 controls participated in an attentional blink (AB) paradigm in which they were required to identify both gambling and neutral words that appeared in a rapid serial visual presentation. Explicit motivation (e.g., intrinsic/arousal, extr

Neural correlates of blink suppression and the buildup of a natural bodily urge.

Neuroimaging studies have elucidated some of the underlying physiology of spontaneous and voluntary eye blinking; however, the neural networks involved in eye blink suppression remain poorly understood. Here we investigated blink suppression by analyzing fMRI data in a block design and event-related manner, and employed a novel hypothetical time-varying neural response model to detect brain activations associated with the buildup of urge. Blinks were found to activate visual cortices while our block design analysis revealed activations limited to the middle occipital gyri and deactivations in

Supratentorial multiple sclerosis lesions affect the blink reflex test.

INTRODUCTION: The Blink Reflex Test (BRT) is a neurophysiological examination used for evaluation of brainstem reflex circuits. MRI is the most precise modality for evaluation of MS lesion anatomy. Our study objective was to investigate how the functional results of the neurophysiological BRT relate to the anatomy of MS lesions in routine MRI studies. METHODS: 65 MS patients underwent the BRT within 2 months of a brain MRI showing demyelinating lesions. RESULTS: The overall sensitivity of the BRT was 90.8%, while in patients with at least one brainstem lesion and no brainstem lesions it was

No differential attentional blink in dyslexia after controlling for baseline sensitivity.

Previous research has associated a prolonged attentional blink (AB) with adult dyslexia [Hari, R., Valta, M., & Uutela, K. (1999). Prolonged attentional dwell time in dyslexic adults. Neuroscience Letters, 271, 202-204]. The AB represents a limitation in temporal information processing, estimated as the time interval between two targets necessary for accurate recall (e.g., [Raymond, J. E., Shapiro, K. L., & Arnell, K. M. (1992). Temporary suppression of visual processing in an RSVP task: An attentional blink? Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 18, 849-860]).

Failure to identify the target does not prevent the attentional blink effect.

The attentional blink has been attributed to capacity limitations at a central level of processing. We tested whether failure to identify the target would eliminate the blink. Two agnostic patients were presented with streams of letters, which they were able to identify, and streams of pictures, which they were unable to identify. The dual-task involved identification of a target and detection of a probe. With letters the duration of the blink was equivalent to that of the control subjects. A prolonged blink was observed in both patients for pictures irrespective of whether the target was iden

Blink duration as an indicator of driver sleepiness in professional bus drivers.

This study focused on eyeblink duration as a measure of sleepiness in on-road driving and on the driving performance of professional bus drivers with polysomnographically confirmed mild obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS). Ten bus drivers with OSAS and their matched controls participated in the study. The Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) and a monotonous on-road driving task were completed. Eyeblink duration and frequency and speed control were measured while driving. Lane-keeping was evaluated by the supervisor in the car. Subsequent to these tasks, drivers with OSAS received continu

Personal names and the attentional blink: a visual "cocktail party" effect.

Four experiments were carried out to investigate an early- versus late-selection explanation for the attentional blink (AB). In both Experiments 1 and 2, 3 groups of participants were required to identify a noun (Experiment 1) or a name (Experiment 2) target (experimental conditions) and then to identify the presence or absence of a 2nd target (probe), which was their own name, another name, or a specified noun from among a noun distractor stream (Experiment 1) or a name distractor stream (Experiment 2). The conclusions drawn are that individuals do not experience an AB for their own names but

Crossed R1 response of the blink reflex in peripheral facial palsy.

A patient with regenerated Bell's palsy showed a crossed R1 component of the blink reflex recorded from the healthy side while stimulating the affected side. Our observation supports the hypothesis that a short-circuit trigemino-facial pathway crossing the midline exists in normal subjects which is not activated under normal conditions, but may be engaged following peripheral facial nerve disease.

Muscle activity during unconditioned and conditioned eye blinks in the rabbit.

EMGs were recorded from the orbicularis oculi, retractor bulbi and superior rectus muscles in rabbits to investigate the time course of muscle activation during unconditioned and conditioned eye blinks. EMGs from the three muscles showed two responses, with the responses of the orbicularis oculi and retractor bulbi showing the same latency, and the responses of the superior rectus lagging. The latency of responses to periorbital electrostimulation was about 5 ms, and to air puff stimulation about 10 ms. Results showed a tight coupling of activity between muscles, with cross-correlograms peakin

Blink reflex measurement of effects of trichloroethylene exposure on the trigeminal nerve.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) exposure is known to have specific toxic effects on cranial nerves, the trigeminal nerve (V) in particular. The electrophysiological measurement of the blink reflex (BR) can quantify latency changes in the Vth and VIIth cranial nerve reflex arc. Prior study looked at the blink reflex measurement in a community group exposed to TCE in their drinking water. This study evaluated the use of the electrophysiologic blink reflex as an indicator of neurotoxic effects of TCE in occupationally exposed workers. The BR was tested in individual cases with documented histories of exp

Effects of anticholinergic agents on the excitability of the blink reflex in Meige syndrome.

Blink reflex recovery cycle, before and after acute administration of orphenadrine chlorhydrate, was tested in Meige syndrome. Data here reported show, after the drug, a decrease of the unconditioned polysynaptic responses, without a significant modification of the blink reflex recovery curves. This fact rules out a specific effect of anticholinergic drugs on the pathological reduction of the inhibitory process, at an interneuronal level of these polysynaptic pathways, in Meige syndrome.
