SARS-CoV-2 and Other Respiratory Viruses in Human Olfactory Pathophysiology.

Acute respiratory viruses (ARVs) are the leading cause of diseases in humans worldwide. High-risk individuals, including children and the elderly, could potentially develop severe illnesses that could result in hospitalization or death in the worst case. The most common ARVs are the Human respiratory syncytial virus, Human Metapneumovirus, Human Parainfluenza Virus, rhinovirus, coronaviruses (including SARS and MERS CoV), adenoviruses, Human Bocavirus, enterovirus (-D68 and 71), and influenza viruses. The olfactory deficits due to ARV infection are a common symptom among patients. This review

Viral infections of the lower respiratory tract: old viruses, new viruses, and the role of diagnosis.

Viral infections of the lower respiratory tract cause an enormous disease burden in children, and the role of respiratory viruses in serious lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) in older adults is increasingly appreciated. Although viruses are responsible for a large proportion LRTIs, antibiotics are often prescribed. New diagnostic platforms have the potential to detect a wider range of established and newly discovered viruses with greater sensitivity. This will create additional challenges. Although it is clear that influenza, parainfluenza, respiratory syncytial virus, human metapneum

Hairpin Transfer-Independent Parvovirus DNA Replication Produces Infectious Virus.

Parvoviruses package a linear single-stranded DNA genome with hairpin structures at both ends. It has been thought that terminal hairpin sequences are indispensable for viral DNA replication. Here, we provide evidence that the hairpin-deleted duplex genomes of human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1) replicate in human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK293) cells. We propose an alternative model for HBoV1 DNA replication in which the leading strand can initiate strand displacement without hairpin transfer. The transfection of the HBoV1 duplex genomes that retain a minimal replication origin at the right end (OriR) bu

Clinical and Virological Characteristics of Early and Moderate Preterm Infants Readmitted With Viral Respiratory Infections.

BACKGROUND: Rehospitalization of children born prematurely (referred to as preterm children) caused by severe respiratory infections is common. Most studies have focused on respiratory syncytial virus infection. We designed a study to determine the virological and clinical characteristics of severe respiratory infections of children born early (<32 weeks) and moderate preterm (32 to 36 weeks), and compared them with full term (FT; ≥37 weeks) children who were subsequently admitted with respiratory illness. METHODS: A 7-year observational prospective study was conducted on preterm and FT child

Detection and phylogenetic analysis of porcine bocaviruses carried by murine rodents and house shrews in China.

Bocaparvovirus infections of humans and both wild and domestic animals have been widely reported around the world. In this study, we detected and genetically characterized porcine bocavirus (PBoV) carried by murine rodents (Rattus norvegicus, Rattus tanezumi, and Rattus losea) and house shrews (Suncus murinus) in China. Between May 2015 and May 2017, 496 murine rodents and 23 house shrews were captured in four Chinese provinces. Nested polymerase chain reaction was used to investigate the prevalence of PBoV in throat swab, faecal and serum samples. A total of 7.5% (39/519) throat swab samples,

Microbiological profile of adenoid hypertrophy correlates to clinical diagnosis in children.

OBJECTIVE: Adenoid hypertrophy is a common condition in childhood, which may be associated with recurring acute otitis media (RAOM), otitis media with effusion (OME), and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). These different clinical characteristics have some clinical overlap; however, they might be explained by distinct immunologic and infectious profiles and result in various histopathologic findings of adenoid specimens. METHODS: A total of 59 children with adenoid hypertrophy undergoing adenoidectomy were studied. Three series of identical adenoid specimens were processed to hematoxyli

Viruses Associated with Acute Conjunctivitis in Vanuatu.

The first manifestation of a viral infection may be conjunctivitis. There are limited data on the etiology of viral conjunctivitis in Vanuatu, a country in the South Pacific Ocean. Patients presenting to one of two Vanuatu health centers with presumed infectious conjunctivitis were eligible if symptom onset was within 14 days of screening. Conjunctival and anterior nasal swabs were obtained and subjected to unbiased RNA deep sequencing (RNA-seq) to identify DNA and RNA viruses. For samples collected from May to November 2021, RNA-seq identified a viral etiology in 12/48 patients. Human adenovi

The SIRT1-Mediated p53 Deacetylation Pathway Modulates Apoptosis and Promotes Viral Replication in MVC-Infected Cells.

Minute virus of canines (MVC) is an autonomous canine parvovirus that causes severe pathological outcomes, including embryo mortality, spontaneous abortion, and congenital malformations in neonatal puppies. Although MVC infection has been shown to induce host cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, the underlying regulatory mechanisms that coordinate cell proliferation and control apoptotic responses during viral replication remain poorly understood. Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) is an NAD+-dependent deacetylase that plays a critical role in regulating cell cycle progression, DNA damage responses, and apoptosis.

Rare and emerging viral infections in transplant recipients.

Emerging viral pathogens include newly discovered viruses as well as previously known viruses that are either increasing, or threatening to increase in incidence. While often first identified in the general population, they may affect transplant recipients, in whom their manifestations may be atypical or more severe. Enhanced molecular methods have increased the rate of viral discovery but have not overcome the problem of demonstrating pathogenicity. At the same time, improved clinical diagnostic methods have increased the detection of reemerging viruses in immunocompromised patients. In this
