BACKGROUND: People with past suicidal thoughts and behavior (STB) are often excluded from digital mental health intervention (DMHI) treatment trials. This may perpetuate barriers to care and reduce treatment generalizability, especially in populations with elevated rates of STB, such as body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). We conducted a cohort study of randomized controlled trial (RCT) participants (N=80) who received a smartphone-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) treatment for BDD that allowed for most forms of past STB, except for past-month active suicidal ideation.

Although individuals facing Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) endure considerable levels of distress, they often do not engage in empirically effective cognitive-behavioral therapy. Identified barriers to seeking treatment include logistical challenges, shame and stigmatization, and pessimistic expectations of mental health interventions associated with a lack of insight into having a psychological issue. This study investigates the relevance of these perceived treatment barriers for face-to-face therapy and for online interventions as a potentially accessible alternative or entry to traditional

This meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis (TSA) of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the psychological treatment of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) was conducted to evaluate the intervention effects and robustness of the evidence. This study included 15 RCTs up until 15 June 2024, with 905 participants. Results showed significant improvements in BDD symptoms (g = -0.97), depression (g = -0.51), anxiety (g = -0.72), insight/delusion (g = -0.57), psychosocial functioning (g = 0.45), and quality of life (g = 0.44), with effects sustained from 1 to 6 months follow-up. BACKGROUND: The prevalence of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) varies across different clinical settings, with evidence indicating its notable presence not only in psychiatric environments but also in dermatology and plastic surgery. This article aims to investigate the etiological factors associated with the elevated incidence of BDD in plastic surgery outpatient settings, with the ultimate objective of enhancing the assessment process for potential cosmetic procedure candidates.
METHODS: We recruited 531 patients seeking consultations or surgeries at the Department of Plastic Surgery, Peking

It has remained unclear whether individuals with psychiatric disorders involving altered visual processing employ similar neuronal mechanisms during perceptual learning of a visual task. We investigated this question by training patients with body dysmorphic disorder, a psychiatric disorder characterized by distressing or impairing preoccupation with nonexistent or slight defects in one's physical appearance, and healthy controls on a visual detection task for human faces with low spatial frequency components. Brain activation during task performance was measured with functional magnetic reson

The aims of the study were to estimate the prevalence of body dysmorphic symptoms in a sample of children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder, possible clinical correlates and whether BDD symptoms predict poorer treatment outcomes after cognitive behavioral therapy. The study included 269 children and adolescents with OCD, aged 7-17 years, from Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, who were treated with 14 weekly sessions of manualized, exposure-based CBT. Twenty-one patients (7.8%) had BDD symptoms. BDD symptoms were associated with older age (p = 0.003) and a higher prevalence of comor

The Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale Modified for Body Dysmorphic Disorder for Adolescents (BDD-YBOCS-A) is a clinician-rated measure of BDD symptom severity in youth. Despite widespread use in both research and clinical practice, its psychometric properties have not been formally evaluated. The current study examined the factor structure, reliability, validity, and sensitivity to change of the BDD-YBOCS-A in 251 youths with BDD attending two specialist clinics. A principal component analysis identified two factors, explaining 56% of the variance. The scale showed good internal consistenc

Despite its frequent use in research studies, the self-report version of the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale modified for Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD-YBOCS-SR) is yet to be formally validated. The present investigation sought to examine the psychometric properties of the BDD-YBOCS-SR across three different samples. In Study 1 (N = 847), we sought to explore the factor structure of the BDD-YBOCS-SR. In addition, we evaluated the convergent and divergent validity with similar self-report measures. In Study 2 (N = 187), the convergence of the BDD-YBOCS-SR with reactivity to an in vivo app

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is characterized by preoccupations with misperceptions of one's physical appearance. Previous neuroimaging studies in BDD have yet to examine dynamic functional connectivity (FC) patterns between brain areas, necessary to capture changes in activity in response to stimuli and task conditions. We used Leading Eigenvector Dynamics Analysis to examine whole-brain dynamic FC from fMRI data during an own-face viewing task in 29 unmedicated adults with BDD with facial concerns and 30 healthy controls. The task involved two parts: (1) unconstrained, naturalistic viewing

The present study examined whether or not there are differential rates of traumatic event exposure and presumed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) between individuals with OCD without comorbid presumed BDD (OCD-Non-BDD) and individuals with OCD with comorbid presumed BDD (OCD+BDD) within a large cohort of OCD participants (N = 605). Individuals in the OCD+BDD group had significantly higher rates of endorsing at least one lifetime traumatic event and presumed PTSD than individuals with OCD-Non-BDD. Additionally, individuals in the OCD+BDD group with comorbid presumed PTSD had significantly h

BACKGROUND: Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that primarily affects the face, affecting a person's physical appearance. Anxiety, depression, and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) are the three primary psychological conditions seen in dermatological patients. This study aimed to assess how prevalent anxiety, depression, and BDD in acne patients and the negative effect of acne on quality of life and self-esteem in dermatology patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was done at the dermatology clinic in East Jeddah Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Data was c

Background: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a psychiatric condition marked by an intense preoccupation with perceived flaws in physical appearance that are minimal or unobservable to others. Given Lebanon's prolonged exposure to cumulative traumatic stress, the country represents a uniquely vulnerable setting in which to explore the interplay between psychological distress and BDD.Objectives: This study aims to: (1) investigate the prevalence of BDD among patients attending dermatology clinics in Lebanon; (2) examine the association between BDD and depression, anxiety, stress, and trauma in

BACKGROUND: Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a psychiatric condition characterized by obsessive preoccupation with perceived physical flaws, often accompanied by emotional dysregulation and attentional biases. Despite increasing clinical recognition, the neurophysiological and attentional mechanisms underlying BDD remain poorly understood.
METHODS: This study employed a multimodal experimental design to compare individuals with BDD (n = 27) and healthy controls (n = 27). Participants completed standardized psychometric assessments and were exposed to emotionally valenced facial and body-rela

There is a paucity of research on the treatment of adolescent body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) has shown initial promise, yet many adolescents do not recover and face significant barriers in accessing treatment. The current study examined the acceptability and preliminary efficacy of developmentally tailored telehealth-delivered CBT for adolescents with BDD, using a single-case, nonconcurrent, multiple baseline design. Recruited from a broader study of correlates of BDD, 22 adolescents were eligible and were offered treatment. Sixteen (12 to 16 years; n = 5 b

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is an underexplored psychiatric condition in Middle Eastern countries, particularly in patients with dermatologic concerns, where alterations in appearance may elevate the risk of BDD. We studied patients at Jordan University Hospital's general dermatology and cosmetic clinics from July to September 2022, comparing them to healthy controls. Patients with dermatologic conditions were evaluated per the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) criteria by trained dermatologists. All participants completed the Dysmorphic Concerns Questionnaire (DCQ), Perceiv

The Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale modified for Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD-YBOCS) is a semi-structured interview designed to assess the severity of current BDD. The aim of the study was to examine the factor structure and construct validity of the BDD-YBOCS. The sample included 366 adults with BDD who completed the BDD-YBOCS and other measures of BDD severity/impairment, psychiatric distress (i.e., anxiety and depression) and quality of life. Exploratory factor analysis supported two factors that were weakly correlated with each other (r = .21): (1) Severity (i.e., time, distress, in

BACKGROUND: This study sought to examine whether mood, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders have unique (comorbidity-independent) associations with suicidal thoughts and behaviors in an acute psychiatric population.
METHODS: Patients (N = 498) were evaluated during admission to a partial hospital. Semi-structured interviews were used to assess current psychiatric diagnoses and past-month suicidal ideation and suicidal behaviors (e.g., suicide attempts).
RESULTS: After adjusting for age, gender and other psychiatric disorders, body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) had a significant a

BACKGROUND: Liposuction is the most common aesthetic surgical procedure performed globally. Some of the patients with normal weight who seek liposuction may suffer from body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Leptin, which is mainly produced by adipose tissue, may be associated with this condition. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of BDD and leptin levels in patients with normal weight seeking liposuction.
METHODS: Thirty-two nonobese women who sought liposuction were matched with 32 healthy volunteers by age and body mass index. Blood biochemistry, leptin levels, and BDD-Yale-Br

This work presents results of a retrospective and prospective research of 15 persons with a double diagnosis: body dysmorphic disorder, and delusional disorder, somatic type. It was established that these disorders starting in adolescence, occurred in persons who earlier had traits of avoidant and obsessive-compulsive personality or social phobia. In most subjects with dysmorphophobia there was comorbidity of dysthymia or major depression. An improvement in the state of these patients, most often after implementation of complex therapeutic measures: psychotherapy as well as pharmacotherapy wit
