Bone modeling patterns and morphometric craniofacial variation in individuals from two prehistoric human populations from Argentina.

Native human populations from South America display high levels of craniofacial variation encompassing gracile and robust skulls. Nevertheless, the processes of bone modeling by which morphological variation among populations were attained, remain poorly understood. Here we analyze the relationship between patterns of bone formation and resorption and morphometric variation in the upper face of adults belonging to farmers and hunter-gatherers from northwestern and south Argentina. Our analyses reveal a common pattern of bone modeling of the malar bone characterized by the presence of formation

Traumatic fractures resulting from collisions in children and adolescents: A retrospective observational study.

To investigate the incidence and pattern of child and adolescent (≤18 years old) traumatic fractures (TFs) as a result of collisions. We retrospectively reviewed 270 child and adolescent patients (228 males and 42 females aged 12.8 ± 5.1 years old) with TFs as a result of collisions admitted to our university-affiliated hospitals from 2001 to 2010. The incidence and patterns were summarized with respect to different age groups, sex, etiology, and whether the patient presented with nerve injury. The most common etiologies were struck by object (105, 38.9%) and wounded by person (74, 27.4%). The m

Duplication in the SHOX Gene as a Rare Genetic Cause of Short Stature and/or Skeletal Abnormalities: A Clinical Report and Review of the Literature.

The SHOX (short stature homeobox containing gene) haploinsufficiency can result in phenotypes ranging from idiopathic short stature to Leri-Weill dyschondrosteosis (LWD). It has been reported to have been detected in 5-17% of children diagnosed with idiopathic short stature, and in 60-90% of children with LWD. SHOX duplications, although typically associated with tall stature, can result in short stature and/or extremity anomalies in rare cases when partial or complete duplications involving the SHOX region occur. In this case report, two patients with extremity anomalies who were found to hav

Novosorb Biodegradable Temporizing Matrix for Reconstruction of Complex Upper-Extremity Wounds.

PURPOSE: Dermal matrices can be used in management of upper-extremity wounds to create vascularized wound beds in the setting of exposed bone or tendon. Early outcomes of Novosorb biodegradable temporizing matrix (BTM) demonstrated success when used in the treatment of complex wounds. We hypothesize that BTM is effective for reconstruction of upper-extremity wounds. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed for patients who underwent reconstruction of upper-extremity wounds with BTM between January 2017 and May 2022. RESULTS: In total, 51 patients (39 males and 12 females) were included.

Insights and trends review: the role of three-dimensional technology in upper extremity surgery.

The use of three-dimensional (3-D) technology in upper extremity surgery has the potential to revolutionize the way that hand and upper limb procedures are planned and performed. 3-D technology can assist in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions, allowing virtual preoperative planning and surgical templating. 3-D printing can allow the production of patient-specific jigs, instruments and implants, allowing surgeons to plan and perform complex procedures with greater precision and accuracy. Previously, cost has been a barrier to the use of 3-D technology, which is now falling rapidly. This

Analysis of acute extremity compartment syndrome using a genealogic population database.

INTRODUCTION: Acute extremity compartment syndrome ("CS") is an under-researched, highly morbid condition affecting trauma populations. The purpose of this study was to analyze incidence rates and risk factors for extremity compartment syndrome using a high-quality population database. Additionally, we evaluated heritable risk for CS using available genealogic data. We hypothesized that diagnosis of extremity compartment syndrome would demonstrate heritability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult patients with fractures of the tibia, femur, and upper extremity were retrospectively identified by ICD-

Future Fracture Risk in Upper Extremity Fracture and Non-Fracture Patients.

BACKGROUND: Upper extremity (UE) fragility fractures are common and strong predictors of subsequent fractures. To investigate the relative importance of an UE fragility fracture in determining future fracture risk, we conducted a cross-sectional study to compare future fracture risk between patients presenting for osteoporosis evaluation after an UE fragility fracture and a similarly aged cohort of patients without an UE fracture. METHODS: In all, 129 UE fracture patients seen in our bone health clinic (BHC) and 114 non-fracture UE fracture patients seen in an UE clinic completed clinic intak

Non operative treatment of obturator dislocation with indentation fracture of the femoral head: A case report.

Traumatic anterior hip dislocation is quite rare and accounts for 7% to 15% of all hip dislocations. Approximately 70% of anterior hip dislocations are the obturator type and represent less than 7% of all hip dislocations. Indentation fracture of the femoral head complicates 35-55% of obturator dislocations. Features of osteonecrosis of the femoral head and osteoarthritis of the hip joint may manifest within 2 years. Our index patient is a 19-year-old female who had conservative treatment for right obturator dislocation with indentation fracture of the femoral head. She recovered fully and had

The Impact of Obesity on Orthopedic Upper Extremity Surgery.

Obese patients have increased rates of upper extremity injury, carpal tunnel syndrome, and upper extremity osteoarthritis. Preoperative considerations include cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, and diabetes mellitus. Intraoperative and anesthetic considerations include specialized equipment, patient positioning, and the physiology of obese patients. Postoperative considerations should include increased risk of cardiovascular complications as well as surgical site infections and malunion. Surgery of the hand and upper extremity may be less prone to the postoperative complications seen i

Ectopic respiratory mucosa in the skin associated with skeletal malformation and polydactyly.

We report a 19-year-old man with congenital erythematous plaque on his left arm that was found histopathologically to be composed of respiratory mucosa. The patient had a triphalangeal thumb and polydactyly in the left hand. This is, to our knowledge, only the third case of ectopic respiratory epithelium presenting as a superficial lesion in the skin to be reported in the English literature, and the first case associated with skeletal malformation and polydactyly.

Upper-extremity pain disorders in breast cancer.

UNLABELLED: Upper-extremity pain is a common and debilitating problem for patients with breast cancer. Although there is considerable literature describing symptoms, little is available on the specific disorders responsible for pain and debility in these patients. Cervical radiculopathy, brachial plexopathy, neuropathy, rotator cuff tendonitis, adhesive capsulitis, epicondylitis, postmastectomy syndrome, swelling, and bone metastases are among the common disorders responsible for upper-extremity pain in breast cancer patients. OVERALL ARTICLE OBJECTIVE: To discuss common upper-extremity pain

Mountain Biking Injury Epidemiology: An Updated Review.

Mountain biking has increased in popularity in recent years. This review article provides an overview of the current literature on risk factors and mechanisms of injury in different disciplines of mountain biking. The head and upper extremity continue to be the most common injury sites. Mountain biking can cause serious injuries, including concussions and fractures. Although there are known risks associated with mountain biking, there is a paucity of studies on injury prevention strategies. Understanding risk factors and mechanisms of injuries is vital for improving rider safety and medical ca

Age-related change in muscle strength, muscle mass, and fat mass between the dominant and non-dominant upper limbs.

BACKGROUND: Any form of physical activity is recommended for the older adults to maintain their physical function; however, the effect of daily activities on muscle function still needs to be investigated. Humans always use one dominant hand to perform tasks, providing a natural situation for research on the effect of daily activities on muscle function. METHODS: Five hundred and twenty-six healthy adults were recruited from the community in Beijing. Muscle strength was assessed using a handgrip dynamometer, lean mass, fat mass, bone area and bone mineral content of upper limbs were assessed

Uncommon obstacle: management of end-stage heart failure in thrombocytopenia with absent radii (TAR) syndrome.

Thrombocytopenia with absent radii (TAR) syndrome is a rare genetic condition causing absent radial bones and thrombocytopenia. Management is generally supportive although there may be a role for platelet-stimulating agents such as romiplostim. In this case, we highlight the obstacles in managing end-stage heart failure in a patient with TAR syndrome.

Biomechanics of Upper Extremity Double Plating.

Double plating (DP) is an established treatment modality in traumatology. For certain indications, such as open reduction and internal fixation of bicondylar tibial plateau fractures and distal humeral fractures, DP is standard of care in the clinical routine. However, the principles of DP can be transferred to other anatomic regions and indications. In the past years, DP has been brought more and more into focus. For revision cases, such as the treatment of fracture non-unions, DP seems generally useful. In anatomical locations with high torsional stress and bending forces, but also in region

Rare sonographic finding of osteogenesis imperfecta type 2: fluid retention in the subarachnoid space.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) type 2 is the most severe form of this osteogenetic disorder. A 26-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for suspected fetal hydrocephalus at 26 weeks' gestation. Detailed ultrasonographic examination revealed fluid retention in the subarachnoid space. The fetal head was expanded, and the skull bone was easily deformed by the pressure of the ultrasound probe. Pleural effusion and ascites were noted, and the upper and lower extremities were extremely shortened and deformed. On helical 3D-CT, the skull bones could not be imaged, and multiple rib fractures and d
