Two new species of Stillabothrium (Cestoda: Rhinebothriidea) from stingrays of the genus Fontitrygon from Senegal.

Morphological and molecular analyses of cestode specimens collected during survey work of batoid elasmobranchs and their parasites in Senegal revealed two new species of the rhinebothriidean cestode genus Stillabothrium Healy et Reyda 2016. Stillabothrium allisonae Dedrick et Reyda sp. n. and Stillabothrium charlotteae Iwanyckyj, Dedrick et Reyda sp. n. are both described from Fontitrygon margaritella (Compagno et Roberts) and Fontitrygon margarita (Günther). Both new cestode species overlap in geographic distribution, host use and proglottid morphology, but are distinguished from each other,

Genome-wide mosaicism in divergence between zoonotic malaria parasite subpopulations with separate sympatric transmission cycles.

Plasmodium knowlesi is a significant cause of human malaria transmitted as a zoonosis from macaque reservoir hosts in South-East Asia. Microsatellite genotyping has indicated that human infections in Malaysian Borneo are an admixture of two highly divergent sympatric parasite subpopulations that are, respectively, associated with long-tailed macaques (Cluster 1) and pig-tailed macaques (Cluster 2). Whole-genome sequences of clinical isolates subsequently confirmed the separate clusters, although fewer of the less common Cluster 2 type were sequenced. Here, to analyse population structure and g

Genetic diversity of toxigenic Vibrio cholerae O1 from Sabah, Malaysia 2015.

BACKGROUND: Cholera is an important health problem in Sabah, a Malaysian state in northern Borneo; however, Vibrio cholerae in Sabah have never been characterized. Since 2002, serogroup O1 strains having the traits of both classical and El Tor biotype, designated as atypical El Tor biotype, have been increasingly reported as the cause of cholera worldwide. These variants are believed to produce clinically more severe disease like classical strains. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the genetic diversity of V.cholerae in Sabah and whether V.cholerae in Sabah belong to atypic

Factors shaping genetic variation in the MHC of natural non-human primate populations.

Across a large distribution range, population-specific factors as well as pathogen-mediated selection may shape species genetic diversity in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). We have studied genetic diversity and population differentiation in the MHC region of the Southeast Asian cynomolgus macaque (Macaca fascicularis fascicularis), a species with large and discontinuous range, in order to investigate the role of demography vs selection. Genetic variation was assessed at seven MHC microsatellites on 272 individuals from five populations (Indochina, Java, Borneo, Philippines, and Mau

Genetic diversity of enterovirus 71 isolated from cases of hand, foot and mouth disease in the 1997, 2000 and 2005 outbreaks, Peninsular Malaysia.

All known field isolates of enterovirus 71 (EV71) can be divided into three distinct genogroups (A, B, C) and 10 subgenogroups (A, B1-5, C1-4) based on VP1 gene sequences. We examined VP1 gene sequences of 10, 12 and 11 EV71 strains isolated in peninsular Malaysia during the outbreaks of hand, foot and mouth disease in 1997, 2000 and 2005 respectively. Four EV71 strains isolated in the hand, foot and mouth disease outbreak of 2006 in Sarawak (Malaysian Borneo) were included to describe their genetic relationship. Four subgenogroups (C1, C2, B3 and B4) of EV71 co-circulated and caused the outbr

Oxygen isotopes in orangutan teeth reveal recent and ancient climate variation.

Studies of climate variation commonly rely on chemical and isotopic changes recorded in sequentially produced growth layers, such as in corals, shells, and tree rings, as well as in accretionary deposits-ice and sediment cores, and speleothems. Oxygen isotopic compositions (δ18O) of tooth enamel are a direct method of reconstructing environmental variation experienced by an individual animal. Here, we utilize long-forming orangutan dentitions (Pongo spp.) to probe recent and ancient rainfall trends on a weekly basis over ~3-11 years per individual. We first demonstrate the lack of any consiste

The detection of Japanese encephalitis virus in Megachiropteran bats in West Kalimantan, Indonesia: A potential enzootic transmission pattern in the absence of pig holdings.

The West Kalimantan province in Borneo island, Indonesia belongs to endemic area of Japanese encephalitis (JE) that accounts for approximately 30% of total cases yearly. As the presence of pig holdings is uncommon in West Kalimantan, another reservoir host might have played a role in the local transmission of JE virus in this area. Current study aimed to identify the potential role of bats in the local transmission of JE by performing molecular detection of JE virus in bats and mosquitoes using RT-PCR. Sample collection was performed in 3 districts in West Kalimantan, covering 3 different ecos

Epidemiology of fatal and non-fatal unintentional childhood drowning in Malaysia-analyses of hospital-based registry data from 2000 to 2022.

Childhood drowning is a major cause of morbidity and mortality with significant economic and social implications, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Despite this, there is a lack of good-quality epidemiological data on childhood drowning. We report the epidemiology of fatal and non-fatal unintentional childhood drowning in Malaysia between the years 2000 and 2022. Data about childhood drowning were obtained from a hospital-based registry gathered by the National Health Informatics Centre, the Ministry of Health, Malaysia. Child population data were downloaded from the Malaysian Ce

A New Look at an Old Face: The Hoà Binh Late Pleistocene Pongo Skull and Other Faciodental Fragments From Breccia Caves in Vietnam-A Morphometric Assessment With Taxonomic Implications.

OBJECTIVES: The taxonomic status of the Middle and Late Pleistocene pongines from northern Vietnam remains obscure. Two current schemes dominate. The first has multiple species of Pongo and Langsonia occupying the region during the late Middle and Late Pleistocene. The second has just two species, with the large species P. weidenreichi from the Early to Late Pleistocene of China evolving into the smaller P. devosi from the Middle/Late Pleistocene transition. Here, we generate several multivariate analyses against the available faciodental specimens from present-day northern Vietnam to test the

Uninvited guests: diversity and specificity of Trypanosoma infections in frog-biting midges (Corethrella spp.).

BACKGROUND: Female frog-biting midges (Corethrella) are hematophagous micropredators that feed on frogs and serve as vectors for trypanosomes (Trypanosoma), unicellular flagellate parasites. Little is known about the infection ecology and host specialization within this tritrophic interaction. METHODS: In this study, we explore the prevalence, diversity and specificity of Trypanosoma infections in Corethrella across various localities in tropical America and Borneo by sequencing both midge and trypanosome markers in midge samples. RESULTS: Bayesian phylogenetic analyses and ASAP species deli

Forest Restoration and the Zoonotic Vector Anopheles balabacensis in Sabah, Malaysia.

Anthropogenic changes to forest cover have been linked to an increase in zoonotic diseases. In many areas, natural forests are being replaced with monoculture plantations, such as oil palm, which reduce biodiversity and create a mosaic of landscapes with increased forest edge habitat and an altered micro-climate. These altered conditions may be facilitating the spread of the zoonotic malaria parasite Plasmodium knowlesi in Sabah, on the island of Borneo, through changes to mosquito vector habitat. We conducted a study on mosquito abundance and diversity in four different land uses comprising r

Potential use of anti-thrombospondin-related apical merozoite protein (TRAMP) polyclonal antibodies in sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detection of Plasmodium knowlesi.

Plasmodium knowlesi, primarily a zoonotic malaria species is the most common malaria pathogen in the Southeast Asia especially in Malaysian Borneo, Malaysia. Due to morphological resemblance of P. knowlesi to other human Plasmodium, the sensitivity for microscopic detection of P. knowlesi, which is the gold standard, is compromised. Thus, efforts have been made in finding alternatives for the disease diagnosis. This study described the potential use of anti-PkTRAMP polyclonal antibodies in sandwich ELISA for P. knowlesi detection. Anti-PkTRAMP polyclonal antibodies raised from mice and rabbit

Potential climate change effects on the distribution of urban and sylvatic dengue and yellow fever vectors.

Climate change may increase the risk of dengue and yellow fever transmission by urban and sylvatic mosquito vectors. Previous research primarily focused on Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. However, dengue and yellow fever have a complex transmission cycle involving sylvatic vectors. Our aim was to analyze how the distribution of areas favorable to both urban and sylvatic vectors could be modified as a consequence of climate change. We projected, to future scenarios, baseline distribution models already published for these vectors based on the favorability function, and mapped the areas wher

Free Radical Scavenging, Anti-Infectious, and Toxicity Activities from Stenochlaena palustris (Burm.f.) Bedd. Extracts.

Stenochlaena palustris (Burm.f.) Bedd. (Blechnaceae) or Kelakai is a traditional medicinal plant found in the Indonesian islands of Borneo and Sumatra. It has been used to treat wound healing, infection, and diabetes. This study looked into the free radical scavenging activity, antiplasmodial activity, toxicity, and antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria. The species' aerial part was extracted with methanol, followed by a liquid-liquid extraction against (n-hexane, dichloromethane, and ethyl acetate). The extracts' free radical scavenging activities were determined using DPPH and N

Recent Incidence of Human Malaria Caused by Plasmodium knowlesi in the Villages in Kudat Peninsula, Sabah, Malaysia: Mapping of The Infection Risk Using Remote Sensing Data.

Plasmodium knowlesi (Pk) is a malaria parasite that naturally infects macaque monkeys in Southeast Asia. Pk malaria, the zoonosis transmitted from the infected monkeys to the humans by Anopheles mosquito vectors, is now a serious health problem in Malaysian Borneo. To create a strategic plan to control Pk malaria, it is important to estimate the occurrence of the disease correctly. The rise of Pk malaria has been explained as being due to ecological changes, especially deforestation. In this research, we analysed the time-series satellite images of MODIS (MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectrorad

Insights on the identities of sharks of the Rhizoprionodon acutus (Elasmobranchii: Carcharhiniformes) species complex based on three new species of Phoreiobothrium (Cestoda: Onchoproteocephalidea).

Recent molecular work on milk sharks (Rhizoprionodon acutus [Rüppell]) suggests that, rather than a single widely distributed species, R. acutus represents a complex of four narrowly distributed cryptic species. Examination of the cestodes in three of the four members of that complex globally led to the discovery and description of three new species in the onchoproteocephalidean genus Phoreiobothrium Linton, 1889. The host associations and geographic distributions of the new species are fully congruent with the geographic distributions and species boundaries inferred for the sharks from molecu

Evaluation of three rapid diagnostic tests for the detection of human infections with Plasmodium knowlesi.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium knowlesi, a malaria parasite of Southeast Asian macaques, infects humans and can cause fatal malaria. It is difficult to diagnose by microscopy because of morphological similarity to Plasmodium malariae. Nested PCR assay is the most accurate method to distinguish P. knowlesi from other Plasmodium species but is not cost effective in resource-poor settings. Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) are recommended for settings where malaria is prevalent. In this study, the effectiveness of three RDTs in detecting P. knowlesi from fresh and frozen patient blood samples was evaluated.
