History as a tool in identifying "new" old drugs.

To trace the history of a natural product and its use, it is necessary to identify to correct plant among around a half-million species. One must also know how and when harvest the plant and the morphology of location and extraction. Within the same species plant chemistry varies, depending upon climatic and soil conditions, stage of maturity and even diurnal factors. To all of these variations must be added the diagnostic ability of physicians and native healers (to distinguish between Hippocratically-trained Western physicians and whose knowledge is less formally taught). Seldom was a diseas

Wild medicinal and food plants used by communities living in Mopane woodlands of southern Angola: Results of an ethnobotanical field investigation.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Mopane woodlands play an important role in the livelihood strategies of local populations; however, they have been scarcely investigated by ethnobiologists and very little is currently known about plants traditionally used by local communities, especially about medicinal plants. AIM OF THE STUDY: Our investigation was aimed to document ethnobotanical knowledge in seven communities living in conditions of extreme poverty in a Mopane area of southern Angola (Namibe province). We focused on plants used as medicines and/or food, in order to highlight the role of wi

Islamic Civilization in Spain - a Magnificient Example of Interaction and Unity of Religion and Science.

Islam and its followers had created a civilization that played very important role on the world stage for more than a thousand years. One of the most important specific qualities of the Islamic civilization is that it is a well-balanced civilization that brought together science and faith, struck a balance between spirit and matter and did not separate this world from the Hereafter. This is what distinguishes the Islamic civilization from other civilizations which attach primary importance to the material aspect of life, physical needs and human instincts, and attach greater attention to this

Pulmonary hypertension and the potential of 'drug' repurposing: A case for African medicinal plants.

AbstractPulmonary hypertension (PH) is a haemodynamic disorder in which elevated blood pressure in the pulmonary circulation is caused by abnormal vascular tone. Despite advances in treatment, PH mortality remains high, and drug repurposing has been proposed as a mitigating approach. This article reviews the studies that have investigated drug repurposing as a viable option for PH. We provide an overview of PH and highlight pharmaceutical drugs with repurposing potential, based on limited evidence of their mechanisms of action. Moreover, studies have demonstrated the benefits of medicinal plan

Grass silica short cell phytoliths in Pyrenean subalpine grasslands: taxonomy and palaeoecological relevance.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Subalpine grasslands of the Central Pyrenees (1600-2300 m a.s.l.) are semi-natural ecosystems shaped by millennia of pastoral land use. Reconstructing their long-term dynamics requires proxies with higher taxonomic resolution than Poaceae pollen. Grass silica short cell phytoliths (GSSCPs) offer this potential. We aim to build a taxonomically broad, ecologically grounded reference collection and assess the diagnostic value of GSSCP assemblages across grass lineages and habitats. METHODS: We inventoried 251 grass species and selected 66 native taxa to maximize phylogenetic

Dispersal ability of seed morphs predicts germination sensitivity to competition cues in a heterocarpic plant.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Seed germination is often regulated by cues that indicate future competitive conditions, and such cues have been shown to either accelerate or suspend germination across species. However, much less is known about how these responses might vary within species, particularly in plants that produce seeds with different dispersal abilities. In seed-heteromorphic species, dispersing and non-dispersing seed morphs may differ in their likelihood of encountering kin competition, potentially selecting for contrasting germination strategies. METHODS: We studied the effect of light c

Temperature-dependent xyloglucan physicochemical changes are associated with XTH-mediated reserve mobilization in Hymenaea courbaril.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Development of Hymenaea courbaril seedlings requires mobilization of xyloglucan (XyG), mediated by four enzymes whose coordinated action reduces cotyledon biomass. Xyloglucan endotransglycosylase/hydrolase (XTH) can display both xyloglucan endotransglucosylase (XET) and xyloglucan endohydrolase (XEH) activities. In Hymenaea-XTH activity is oligosaccharide-dependent, suggesting XET-like behavior. XyGs react with iodine to form a blue-colored, temperature-sensitive complex. Here, this interaction was used to study the biochemical and biophysical properties of XyGs and the Hy

Taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic structure of Mt. Washington's woody plant communities (New Hampshire, USA).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Environmental gradients structure plant communities at fine to coarse scales. Along elevational gradients, abiotic conditions influence community assembly by filtering species based on their functional strategies, which themselves may be phylogenetically structured. However, it remains challenging to identify which abiotic factors and functional traits are most relevant for gradient-wide assembly, particularly when potential drivers covary. METHODS: We intensively sampled the composition and leaf traits of woody plant communities across a steep elevational gradient on Mt.

Conservation Genomics Provides Essential Insights for the Management of Endangered Populations and the Utility of Ex Situ Collections for Species Recovery: A Case Study in Encephalartos latifrons.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Ex situ collections can be reservoirs for endangered species to be used in reintroductions but critical data on the provenance and genetic diversity of these collections is often lacking. For example, while more than 70% of Cycad species are threatened with extinction, many individuals are held in private collections and botanical gardens. However, their utility is hampered by our limited understanding of genetic diversity among wild populations and unknown provenance of many ex situ plants. Conservation genomics can meet both challenges by providing estimates of allelic d

Host preference and performance shape infection patterns in the parasitic plant Cuscuta chilensis in the Chilean coastal desert.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Host choice shapes infection patterns in parasitic plants, yet how host availability translates into realized host use in natural communities remains poorly understood. We investigated host use by the stem parasite Cuscuta chilensis in the Chilean Coastal Desert, examining how host detection, choice, and infection after contact contribute to field infection patterns and whether host use is associated with parasite performance. METHODS: We conducted field surveys to document host availability and infection prevalence. Germinated C. chilensis seedlings were used in laborato

Role of Wind and Insects in the Pollination of Ephedra (Gnetales) in Contrasting Habitats of Northwestern Argentina.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Species of Ephedra (Gnetales) produce sugar-rich pollination drops on their ovules, which capture wind-borne pollen but may also attract insects. The relative importance of wind and insects as pollen vectors may vary with habitat characteristics. We evaluated the relative contributions of wind and insects to the reproductive success of three Ephedra species-E. multiflora, E. breana and E. triandra-inhabiting contrasting environments in northwestern Argentina, from the open, high-elevation Puna to the structurally complex Monte Desert ecoregion. METHODS: We conducted open

Experimental thinning reduces inter-ovary competition among and within inflorescences.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Resource availability often limits female reproductive success in plants, especially when multiple flowers within inflorescences compete simultaneously for limited resources. Here, I explore whether relaxation of inter-ovary competition (through experimental thinning of inflorescences and/or inflorescence buds) influences resource allocation and enhances reproductive output in Lupinus polyphyllus, a legume species with vertical inflorescences that typically show a decline in fruit and seed production from basal to distal flowers. METHODS: I implemented a gradient of repro

Phyllotaxis, ontogeny and CT imaging: old and new approaches to understanding optimal seed packing in Middle Jurassic Araucaria mirabilis cones.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Fibonacci spiral phyllotaxis is overwhelmingly the most common leaf arrangement among plants, both today and in the fossil record. Spiral phyllotaxis appeared as early as the Late Devonian, some 380 Mya. This mathematical property has been studied rigorously in living conifer species; however, the phyllotaxis of fossil conifer seed cones remains under-studied, including that of the Middle Jurassic seed cones of Araucaria mirabilis. METHODS: Twenty-one A. mirabilis seed cones from the Bosques Petrificados de Jaramillo National Park, Argentina, were analysed for their morph

Ecological function of the 'elephant trunk' upper corolla in Pedicularis species.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The evolution of intricate floral structures is often a direct consequence of pollinator-mediated selection. In buzz-pollinated plants, pollen is released through vibrations, and control of its removal is crucial for maximizing male reproductive success. The genus Pedicularis presents a compelling case, with many species exhibiting a distinctive upper corolla lip, or galea, shaped like a 'beak' or 'elephant trunk'. The adaptive function of this trait has remained mysterious and largely not subjected to empirical testing. We hypothesized that the beak acts as a dispensing t

High-elevation angiosperms maintain extensive living storage tissue with large non-structural carbohydrate pools.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Plant survival at extreme elevations depends on how carbon and nutrients are stored and mobilized at the cellular scale. High-elevation plants experiencing persistent cold and short growing seasons are predicted to maintain large pools of non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) and extensive storage tissue that buffer metabolism and enhance stress tolerance, yet comparative evidence across diverse floras remains scarce. Here, we examine whether high-mountain plants in the western Himalayas increase NSC pools and, consequently, the proportion of storage tissue. METHODS: We ana
