[Mode of presentation of fistula of the first branchial cleft].

BACKGROUND: The rarity and diverse presentations of first branchial cleft anomalies lead to misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment. POPULATION AND METHODS: We report 21 cases of such anomalies in children aged 7 months to 8 years whose diagnosis was presumed on clinical presentation and confirmed at surgery. RESULTS: The symptoms were intractable otorrhea, periauricular, cervical and parotid suppuration, which were present in two, 12, five and three cases, respectively. Two children had an abnormal eardrum and three an epidermic cyst in the external ear canal. CONCLUSION: The diagnosis of a

[Combination of plastic and orthognathic procedures, for the surgical correction of the hemifacial microsomia].

This syndrome is made up of a constellation of congenitally malformed facial structures which arises from the first and second branchial arches. A case of hemifacial microsomia, with the physical characteristics of unilateral left underdevelopment of the external and middle ear, mandible and zygoma is presented. The treatment took place in two stages: Firstly the auricle was reconstructed with the method of tissue expander and silicone frame and secondly the mandibular prognathism and laterognathism with sagittal splitting was corrected. We present our case and the results that have been gaine

Anomalies of the first branchial cleft.

Eleven cases of first branchial cleft duplication anomalies are classified into types I and II. Type I defects are associated with the first cleft and are duplication anomalies of the membranous external auditory canal. Type II defects are associated with the first cleft and first and second arches, and, as such, are associated with defects of the membranous external auditory canal and cartilaginous elements. Microscopical examination of tissue in type I anomalies shows a cyst lined by skin without adnexal structures and without cartilage. Type II anomalies usually contain all elements. Misdia

Common Congenital Anomalies.

It is not unusual to detect congenital anomalies in the neonatal period. Fortunately, many of them are benign and inconsequential. These may include branchial cleft cysts, bifid uvula, oral inclusion cysts, and thyroglossal duct cysts. In the newborn period, it is vital for health care providers to be cognizant of the anomalies. The health care provider must differentiate those that are benign and need only reassurance from those that may require additional evaluation and referral. In this article, we discuss the etiologies, clinical presentations, and management of several of these anomalies.

Use of contrast-enhanced ultrasound in preoperative planning before resection of a second branchial cleft fistula.

In the head and neck area, a large proportion of clinically relevant fistulas occur in childhood. The present case describes the use of contrast enhanced ultrasound with intraductal administration of the contrast medium for preoperative visualization of the fistula duct in the case of a second brachial cleft fistula. This provided the surgeon with important additional information, such as the detailed course of the fistula and its relation to the large vessels of the neck. The method can help to improve surgical planning, reduce radiation exposure and to avoid imaging under general anesthesia,

Cervical chondrocutaneous branchial remnants: A report of 29 cases and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Cervical chondrocutaneous branchial remnants (CCBRs) are rare masses located in the anterior region of the neck. Though the basic characteristics of these rare masses were first described by Atlan in 1997, a critical amount of information about these masses remains unknown. This study aimed to further clarify the characteristics of these rare masses. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records of patients with CCBRs in our facility during a 32-year period ranging from 1988 to 2019. We then compared our clinical records with other case reports. RESULTS: There were 29

Branchial cleft fistula to branchio-oto-renal syndrome: A case report and literature review.

Branchial cleft abnormality is a common congenital neck malformation in children, which is caused by the abnormal development of the gill sac or gill groove. It is mainly manifested as a cyst in the sinus tract and fistula in the neck, as well as branchio-oto-renal syndrome (BORS). As a rare autosomal dominant genetic disease, the typical manifestations of BORS are hearing loss, abnormal branchial cleft development and renal dysplasia. In this paper, a patient was admitted to the hospital for bilateral branchial cleft fistulas combined with bilateral anterior auricular fistulas, auricular appe

Fourth branchial pouch sinus: A report of 7 cases and review of the literature.

A fourth branchial pouch sinus often manifests quite late in life as a recurrent neck abscess, suppurative thyroiditis, or pseudothyroiditis. Demonstration of the sinus opening in the piriform fossa by hypopharyngoscopy in combination with ultrasonography of the neck provides adequate information to justify proceeding to surgery. The sinus tract usually courses through the thyroid cartilage. The most effective treatment is surgical excision of the tract up to the piriform fossa through the cartilage. This procedure is associated with very low complication and recurrence rates. A fourth branchi

Extraction and Quantification of Bioactive Tyrian Purple Precursors: A Comparative and Validation Study from the Hypobranchial Gland of a Muricid Dicathais orbita.

Muricidae are marine molluscs known for the production of Tyrian purple and bioactive precursor compounds. A validation study for the extraction and analysis of secondary metabolites found in the hypobranchial gland of the muricid Dicathais orbita is reported, using high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) with diode array detector (DAD). Quantification of the dominant secondary metabolites from D. orbita is described, followed by a comparison of solvent extraction procedures and stability studies. The intra- and inter-day relative standard deviation (RSD) for tyrindo

New insights into craniofacial malformations.

Development of the human skull and face is a highly orchestrated and complex three-dimensional morphogenetic process, involving hundreds of genes controlling the coordinated patterning, proliferation and differentiation of tissues having multiple embryological origins. Craniofacial malformations that occur because of abnormal development (including cleft lip and/or palate, craniosynostosis and facial dysostoses), comprise over one-third of all congenital birth defects. High-throughput sequencing has recently led to the identification of many new causative disease genes and functional studies h

Very low pressures drive ventilatory flow in chimaeroid fishes.

Chimaera (Holocephali) are cartilaginous fishes with flexible operculi rather than external gill slits, suggesting ventilation occurs in a manner different from other fishes. We examined holocephalan ventilation morphology, behavior, and performance by anatomical investigations, high-speed video, and in vivo pressure measurements from the buccal and parabranchial cranial cavities in Hydrolagus colliei and Callorhinchus callorynchus. Ventilatory modes ranged from quiet resting breathing to rapid "active" breathing, yet external cranial movements-excepting the passive movement of the opercular f

Preauricular sinus, nephrolithiasis, infantine eczema and natal tooth: a new association.

Preauricular sinuses (ear pits) are common congenital abnormalities. The incidence of preauricular sinus is widely varied. Usually asymptomatic, they manifest as small hollows adjacent to the external ear near the anterior margin of the ascending limb of the helix, most frequently on the right side. Preauricular sinuses can be either inherited or sporadic. They may be bilateral, increasing the likelihood of being inherited, in 25-50% of cases. Preauricular sinuses are features of other conditions or syndromes in 3-10% of cases, primarily in association with deafness and branchio-oto-renal (BOR

Management of second branchial cleft anomalies.

Branchial cleft anomalies are developmental disorders of the neck. The aim of this study was to evaluate the data of our patients, who have been diagnosed and treated for second branchial abnormalities in the last six years. We report our clinical experience in second branchial anomalies with a review of the literature. Our study is a retrospective one on a number of 23 patients hospitalized within 2001-2007 in ENT Clinic of Craiova for second branchial abnormalities in relation with age, gender, origin environment, clinical and paraclinical context in which the therapeutic decision was made,
