The combination of physical exercise and slow-paced breathing on psychophysiological indices of emotion reactivity, psychosocial stress reactivity and recovery: A multimodal investigation.

Stress is a major public health problem calling for scalable interventions. Physical activity (PA) and slow-paced breathing (SPB) can reduce stress, both by modulating cardiac parasympathetic activity. Given their shared target but different mechanisms, combining SPB and PA could enhance their stress-reducing effects. This study therefore explores whether SPB (vs control breathing at a faster rate) after PA increases the impact of PA on psychophysiological indices of emotional reactivity and psychosocial stress reactivity and recovery. In a crossover randomized design, 77 healthy volunteers co

A Respiratory Sensor-Based Study of the Relationship between Voluntary Breathing Patterns and Aerobic and Anerobic Exercise Capacity-An Exploratory Applied Study.

(1) Background: Exploring the relationship between spontaneous breathing patterns and aerobic and anerobic running exercise performance can greatly improve our understanding of optimizing physical fitness. Spontaneous breathing patterns refer to how the rhythm and depth of breathing affect performance and physical adaptation during exercise. (2) Methods: This study aimed to investigate this relationship by enrolling 240 college students (120 males and 120 females, aged 18-22). We evaluated their resting respiratory rate (RR), the combined total of abdominal and thoracic movements (AM+TM), the

Endurance Exercise Performance Is Reduced after 6-h Dives at 1.35 ATA When Breathing 100% Oxygen Compared with Air.

INTRODUCTION: Long-duration dives on consecutive days reduces muscular performance, potentially affecting military personnel. However, a paucity of data exists on how breathing gases affect endurance performance. This study examined the influence of long-duration diving with different breathing gases on aerobic endurance and handgrip performance. METHODS: Twenty-three military divers completed a single 6-h dive (single dive [SD]) and five 6-h dives over consecutive days (dive week [DW]) with 30-min cycling intervals using air (AIR, n = 13) or 100% oxygen (OXY, n = 10). Before and after SD and

Classification and occurrence of an abnormal breathing pattern during cardiopulmonary exercise testing in subjects with persistent symptoms following COVID-19 disease.

Reduced exercise capacity and several limiting symptoms during exercise have been reported following severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. From clinical observations, we hypothesized that an abnormal breathing pattern (BrP) during exercise may be common in these patients and related to reduced exercise capacity. We aimed to (a) evaluate a method to classify the BrP as normal/abnormal or borderline in terms of inter-rater agreement; (b) determine the occurrence of an abnormal BrP in patients with post-COVID; and (c) compare characteristics of post-COVID patient

Rumba Dance Combined with Breathing Training as an Exercise Intervention in the Management of Stress Urinary Incontinence in Postmenopausal Women: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Purpose: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) refers to involuntary leakage from the urethra, synchronous with exertion/effort, sneezing or coughing, which has a negative effect on quality of life. Studies have shown that mild-to-moderate physical activities reduce the risk of SUI by multiple mechanisms. The objective of this study was to determine whether the Rumba dance combined with breathing training (RDBT) can reduce the severity of incontinence and improve the quality of life of patients with SUI. Methods: A randomized clinical trial was conducted with women who were sedentary, were postmen

[Dynamic changes of repolarization pattern associated with deep breathing and exercise in a young athlete: the sign "athletes heart" or concealed heart disease?].

We described ECG of a 22-year-old healthy man, professional basketball player, who has been training since he was 14. Physical examination was normal. In ECG the following abnormalities of repolarisation were observed: biphasic, positive/negative T waves in leads V3-V6. This changes normalised during deep breathing test. The echocardiogram revealed normal size of the heart's chambers, left ventricular walls hypertrophy - septum and posterior wall: 14 mm, normal mitral inflow - E/A = 1.1, normal ejection fraction (68%). The exercise test (ExT, 20 METS) was without symptoms. During ExT normalisa

A randomised controlled study of the effectiveness of breathing retraining exercises taught by a physiotherapist either by instructional DVD or in face-to-face sessions in the management of asthma in adults.

BACKGROUND: Asthma control is suboptimal, resulting in quality of life (QoL) impairment and costs. Breathing retraining exercises have evidence of effectiveness as adjuvant treatment, but are infrequently used. OBJECTIVES: To transfer the contents of a brief (three-session) physiotherapist-delivered breathing retraining programme to a digital versatile disc (DVD) and booklet format; to compare the effectiveness of the self-guided intervention with that of 'face-to-face' physiotherapy and usual care for QoL and other asthma-related outcomes; to perform a health economic assessment of both inte

Is breathing frequency a potential means for monitoring exercise intensity in people with atrial fibrillation and coronary heart disease when heart rate is mitigated?

PURPOSE: Moderate-intensity aerobic exercise is safe and beneficial in atrial fibrillation (AF) and coronary heart disease (CHD). Irregular or rapid heart rates (HR) in AF and other heart conditions create a challenge to using HR to monitor exercise intensity. The purpose of this study was to assess the potential of breathing frequency (BF) to monitor exercise intensity in people with AF and CHD without AF. METHODS: This observational study included 30 AF participants (19 Male, 70.7 ± 8.7 yrs) and 67 non-AF CHD participants (38 Male, 56.9 ± 11.4 yrs). All performed an incremental maximal exer

The role of the autonomic nervous system in control of cardiac and air-breathing responses to sustained aerobic exercise in the African sharptooth catfish Clarias gariepinus.

Clarias gariepinus is a facultative air-breathing catfish that exhibits changes in heart rate (ƒH) associated with air-breaths (AB). A transient bradycardia prior to the AB is followed by sustained tachycardia during breath-hold. This study evaluated air-breathing and cardiac responses to sustained aerobic exercise in juveniles (total length~20cm), and how exercise influenced variations in fH associated with AB. In particular, it investigated the role of adrenergic and cholinergic control in cardiac responses, and effects of pharmacological abolition of this control on air-breathing responses.

Effect of air breathing on acid-base and ion regulation after exhaustive exercise and during low pH exposure in the bowfin, Amia calva.

To explore a potential conflict between air breathing and acid-base regulation in the bowfin (Amia calva), we examined how individuals with access to air differed from fish without air access in their response to acidosis. After exhaustive exercise, bowfin with access to air recovered significantly more slowly from the acidosis than fish without air access. While arterial blood pH (pH(a)) of fish without air access recovered to resting levels by 8 h, pH(a) was still significantly depressed in fish having access to air. In addition, Pco(2) was slightly more elevated in fish having air access th

Acute and chronic application of novel incremental breath-hold technique increases endurance exercise performance in healthy men and male military personnel.

We evaluated acute (Study A) and chronic (Study B) effects of a novel breath-hold technique (BHT) protocol on performance in military personnel. In Study A, 11 healthy male participants completed either rest or a 40-min BHT before 15 min steady-state (SS) cycling at 80% V̇O2max and a 5-min time trial (TT). BHT acutely increased V̇O2 (200.3%, p = 0.005), produced a significant rise in hemoglobin (Hb; 3%, p = 0.030), and altered end-tidal oxygen (ETO2; 2.99%, p = 0.054), and lower end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2; 12.1%, p = 0.065), reflecting changes in pulmonary gas exchange following breath-ho

Rest and exercise-stress estimated pulmonary capillary wedge pressure using real-time free-breathing cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Identification of increased pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) by right heart catheterization (RHC) is the reference standard for the diagnosis of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Recently, cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging estimation of PCWP at rest was introduced as a non-invasive alternative. Since many patients are only identified during physiological exercise-stress, we hypothesized that novel exercise-stress CMR-derived PCWP emerges superior compared to its assessment at rest. METHODS: The HFpEF-Stress Trial prospectively recruited
