OBJECTIVE: To identify the real-time effects of interictal rolandic spikes (or centrotemporal spikes [CTS]) on language, behavior, and cognitive function in patients with rolandic epilepsy (RE).
METHODS: We studied 22 medication-naive patients with RE using EEG-fMRI with a 3T MRI scanner. We used simultaneous EEG to define the pre-CTS, CTS, and post-CTS periods. We analyzed the dynamic functional connectivity maps of the rolandic network during the 3 interictal CTS periods.
RESULTS: The analysis of dynamic changes revealed positive correlations between the bilateral rolandic areas and the le

Little is known about the neural counterparts of speech therapy in aphasic patients. An fMRI experiment was performed before and after a specific and intensive speech output therapy in RC, a patient with long-lasting speech output deficit following a left-sided ischemic lesion. Overt picture naming and picture/word rhyming were used as activation tasks in RC and 6 control subjects. The naming task concerned the output lexicon deficit to be rehabilitated while rhyming referred to preserved levels of processing and was used to control for repetition effect. The speech therapy program improved na

Regions of the brain involved in language and attention were studied using [18F]-fluorodeoxy-glucose in PET. In nine chronic DSM-III schizophrenic patients who had persistent auditory hallucinations, ten who had recovered from hallucinations and ten normal controls. In none of the regions examined was metabolic activity significantly different in hallucinating patients compared with that in other groups. However, a pattern of seven significant correlations of metabolic activity between language regions and between frontal and parietal cortex characterised the hallucinating but not the other gr

Two patients with agrammatic speech and unimpaired comprehension are presented and contrasted. Case 1 had an infarction involving precentral gyrus, subjacent white matter, and posterior and superior aspects of the insula, largely sparing Broca's area. His speech was slow and dysarthric, consisting of short disconnected phrases with some omission of lexical verbs. Case 2 had an unusual transient aphasia of acute onset without hemiplegia; speech rate, articulation, and sentence length and complexity appeared normal. Both patients tended to omit function words and finite verb inflections, but Cas

The arcuate fasciculus (AF) has been implicated in its association with intelligence. Probabilistic tractography on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data provides isolation of white matter tracts between two distant cortical structures. In this study, we performed probabilistic tractography between Wernicke's and Broca's area in the left and right hemisphere, to examine the association of the arcuate fasciculus's integrity with age and intelligence, using DTI data from 488 individuals whose age ranges between 6 to 85 years. The left, but not right, AF showed significant decline with age. Both le

In the congenitally blind, language processing involves visual areas. In the case of normal visual development however, it remains unclear whether later visual loss induces interactions between the language and visual areas. This study compared the resting-state functional connectivity (FC) of retinotopic and language areas in two unique groups of late visually deprived subjects: (1) blind individuals suffering from retinitis pigmentosa (RP), (2) RP subjects without a visual periphery but with preserved central "tunnel vision", both of whom were contrasted with sighted controls. The results sh

Speech comprehension difficulties are ubiquitous to aging and hearing loss, particularly in noisy environments. Older adults' poorer speech-in-noise (SIN) comprehension has been related to abnormal neural representations within various nodes (regions) of the speech network, but how senescent changes in hearing alter the transmission of brain signals remains unspecified. We measured electroencephalograms in older adults with and without mild hearing loss during a SIN identification task. Using functional connectivity and graph-theoretic analyses, we show that hearing-impaired (HI) listeners hav

BACKGROUND: In the pediatric population, awake craniotomy began to be used for the resection of brain tumor located close to eloquent areas. Some specificities must be taken into account to adapt this method to children.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this clinical study is to not only confirm the feasibility of awake craniotomy and language brain mapping in the pediatric population but also identify the specificities and necessary adaptations of the procedure.
METHODS: Six children aged 11 to 16 were operated on while awake under local anesthesia with language brain mapping for supratentorial brain

INTRODUCTION: Graph theory is a promising mathematical tool to study the connectome. However, little research has been undertaken to correlate graph metrics to functional properties of the brain. In this study, we report a unique association between the strength of cortical regions and their function.
METHODS: Eight structural graphs were constructed within DSI Studio using publicly available imaging data derived from the Human Connectome Project. Whole-brain fiber tractography was performed to quantify the strength of each cortical region comprising our atlas.
RESULTS: Rank-order analysis r

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the connectivity associated with the reorganized language network in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) using cortico-cortical evoked potential (CCEP), which reveals the brain networks.
METHODS: Six patients with intractable TLE who underwent chronic intracranial electrode placement and revealed an atypical distribution of posterior language areas (Wernicke's areas) were studied. Alternating 1 Hz electrical stimuli were delivered to the anterior language areas (Broca's areas). CCEPs were recorded by averaging electrocorticograms time-locked to stimuli from th

Efferent projections from the parabrachial complex (PBN) were studied in the rat using the anterograde tracer, Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin (PHA-L). Projections to the hypothalamus (ventromedial, dorsomedial, paraventricular, and supraoptic nuclei) originate primarily in the lateral PBN (1PBN). The amygdalar central nucleus (ACE) receives strong projections from all parts of the PBN although the external 1PBN projects primarily to the lateral ACE. Whereas the projections to the lateral bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, median preoptic nucleus, diagonal band of Broca, and lateral preop

Interpersonal interaction is essential to romantic couples. Understanding how gender impacts an individual's brain activities during intimate interaction is crucial. The present study examined gender differences in oxyhemoglobin (oxy-Hb) changes during real-time drawing interactions between members of romantic couples using non-invasive functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). We analyzed the oxy-Hb concentrations of romantic couples engaged in interactive (i.e., chase and escape) and non-interactive (i.e., individual) drawing sessions. Our findings indicated that males (vs. females) exh

RATIONALE: To compare and contrast structural and functional imaging in primary progressive aphasia (PPA).
METHODS: A cohort of 8 patients diagnosed with PPA presenting with nonfluency were prospectively evaluated. All patients had structural imaging in the form of MRI and in 1 patient CAT scanning on account of a cardiac pacemaker. All patients had single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET) imaging.
RESULTS: SPECT and PET imaging had 100% correlation. Anatomical imaging was abnormal in only 6 of the 8 patients. Wernicke's area showed greater pe

Spatiotemporal maps of brain activity based on magnetoencephalography were used to observe sequential stages in language processing and their modification during repetition priming. Subjects performed word-stem completion and produced either novel or repeated (primed) words across trials. Activation passes from primary visual cortex (activated at approximately 100 msec after word presentation), to left anteroventral occipital ( approximately 180 msec), to cortex in and near Wernicke's ( approximately 210 msec) and then Broca's ( approximately 370 msec) areas. In addition, a posteroventral temp

Until now, hypometabolic patterns and their correlations with neuropsychological performance have not been assessed as a function of the various presentations of sporadic early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD). Here, we processed and analyzed the patients' metabolic maps at the vertex and voxel levels by using a nonparametric, permutation method that also regressed out the effects of cortical thickness and gray matter volume, respectively. The hypometabolism patterns in several areas of the brain were significantly correlated with the clinical manifestations. These areas included the paralimbi

Broca's region, which in the language-dominant hemisphere of the human brain plays a major role in language production, includes two distinct cytoarchitectonic areas: 44 and 45. The unique connectivity patterns of these two areas have not been well established. In a resting-state functional connectivity study, we tested predictions about these areas from invasive tract-tracing studies of the connectivity of their homologs in the macaque monkey. We demonstrated their distinct connectivity profiles as well as their differences from the caudally adjacent ventral parts of the premotor cortex and t

Speech comprehension includes both bottom-up and top-down processes, and imaging studies have isolated a frontal-temporal network of brain areas active during speech perception. However, the precise role of the various areas in this network during normal speech comprehension is not yet fully understood. In the present fMRI study, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of spoken sentences was varied in 144 steps, and speech intelligibility was measured independently in order to study in detail its effect on the activation of brain areas involved in speech perception. Relative to noise alone, intelligi

Summarizing, we have presented evidence in humans for two "negative motor areas" which we had speculated play a significant role in the planning of voluntary motor movements. A review of the more recent experimental literature shows that histological, physiological, and electrical stimulation studies in animals reveal the existence of two frontal regions that from the experimental data also seem to play an essential role in the preparation (as opposed to execution) of voluntary movements. Current available evidence suggests that these two areas (areas F5 and F6 of Rizzolatti et al.) correspond

Listening in a noisy environment is challenging for individuals with normal hearing and can be a significant burden for those with hearing impairment. The extent to which this burden is alleviated by a hearing device is a major, unresolved issue for rehabilitation. Here, we found adult users of cochlear implants (CIs) self-reported listening effort during a speech-in-noise task that was positively related to alpha oscillatory activity in the left inferior frontal cortex, canonical Broca's area, and inversely related to speech envelope coherence in the 2-5 Hz range originating in the superior-t
