p14ARF ameliorates inflammation and airway remodeling in nitric acid aerosol inhalation-induced bronchiolitis obliterans.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the protective effect of p14ARF in a nitric acid (NA) aerosol inhalation-induced bronchiolitis obliterans (BO) mouse model and its potential regulatory mechanism. METHODS: A BO mouse model was established by NA aerosol inhalation. The expressions of p14ARF, phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K), and protein kinase B (AKT) were detected by quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) and western blot (WB). Hematoxylin (HE) staining, Masson staining, and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining observed pulmonary histological changes. TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling

Pulmonary Barotrauma Following Nasal High-Flow Therapy in a Patient with Bronchiolitis Obliterans Syndrome.

BACKGROUND Pulmonary barotrauma is considered as complication of the use of positive-pressure ventilations. Nasal high-flow therapy is increasingly being used as an alternative to them. Nasal high-flow therapy rarely causes pulmonary barotrauma probably because airway pressures are lower when compared with invasive mechanical ventilation. Bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome after allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is triggered by an alloimmune response in the bronchioles and causes obstruction of the bronchioles. However, the threshold of additional positive pressure has not been

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation rescue in adolescent with bronchiolitis obliterans-organizing pneumonia like Wegener's granulomatosis.

We report a 17-year-old woman with bronchiolitis obliterans-organizing pneumonia (BOOP)-like granulomatosis with polyangiitis developing severe airway obliterations. Pending age, phase and grade of autoimmune treatment, and offering ECMO treatment may be crucial for survival but occasionally preface futility. ECMO-treated patient with BOOP-like GPA has never been described before.

Clinical features of post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans in children undergoing long-term azithromycin treatment.

The aim of the present study was to outline any predisposing factors and clinical and radiological features of post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans (PIBO) in pediatric patients, and to determine the effect of long-term azithromycin treatment on these factors. In total, 16 cases of children with PIBO were retrospectively reviewed. Adenovirus and Mycoplasma pneumoniae were the most common etiological agents (12/16) in the children with PIBO. The patients presented with persistent dyspnea, a chronic cough, sputum production and wheezing following the initial lung infection. Chest X-rays indic

A case-control study of bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) is a significant complication after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). However, the pathogenesis and risks for the development of BOS have remained unclear. Therefore, a case-control study was conducted to investigate the risk factors for the development of BOS, which included the largest number of BOS cases; 196 patients with BOS were identified and compared with 1960 control recipients. The following were identified as significantly higher risk factors for the development of BOS: female recipients (OR 1.47, P = 0.019), ABO-misma

Course of FEV(1) after onset of bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome in lung transplant recipients.

RATIONALE: Bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS), defined by loss of lung function, develops in the majority of lung transplant recipients. However, there is a paucity of information on the subsequent course of lung function in these patients. OBJECTIVES: To characterize the course of FEV(1) over time after development of BOS and to determine the predictors that influence the rate of functional decline of FEV(1). METHODS: FEV(1)% predicted (FEV(1)%pred) trajectories were studied in 111 lung transplant recipients with BOS by multivariate, linear, mixed-effects statistical models. MEASUREME

Nasal tolerance with collagen v protein reverts bronchovascular axis remodeling in experimental bronchiolitis obliterans.

INTRODUCTION: The precise role of the remodeling process and possible therapies for bronchiolitis obliterans remain to be established. OBJECTIVE: [corrected] In the present study, we sought to validate the importance of nasal collagen V tolerance to verify whether bronchovascular axis remodeling could be reverted by this therapeutic approach when compared to steroid treatment. METHODS: Mice were randomly divided into 4 groups: control, bronchiolitis obliterans, collagen V tolerance, and prednisone groups. Morphometry was employed to evaluate bronchovascular axis dimensions, collagen density,

[Bronchiolitis obliterans-organizing pneumonia (BOOP) containing asbestos bodies: clinico-pathological study of a case].

We describe a case of bronchiolitis obliterans-organizing pneumonia (BOOP) with asbestos bodies. A 65-year-old man, treated in the past for gastric lymphoma and with an history of asbestos exposure, presented with fever and two nodular opacities in the lower lobe of the left lung. Histologic examination revealed a BOOP pattern; in the inflammatory tissue some asbestos bodies were present. Patients exposed to asbestos may rarely present with localized inflammatory pulmonary lesions. In these cases, the possible etiopathogenetic role of asbestos needs further studies.

Bronchiolitis obliterans in children with Stevens-Johnson syndrome: follow-up with high resolution CT.

About one third of children with Stevens-Johnson syndrome have pulmonary involvement. As a consequence of airway epithelial injury, bronchiolitis obliterans can occur in these patients. Two cases of Stevens-Johnson syndrome-associated bronchiolitis obliterans in children were diagnosed and followed by high resolution CT without open lung biopsy. Serial changes of high resolution CT features of bronchiolitis obliterans are discussed and the literature is reviewed.

Development of bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome in recipients of heart-lung transplantation--early risk factors.

Given the internationally recognized definition of bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) and longer follow up of heart-lung transplant recipients, it is possible to establish some of the major risk factors for development and progression of BOS. Between April 1984 and 31 December 1993, 157 patients underwent heart-lung transplantation; 126 survived at least six months after operation and so were at risk of developing BOS. The following early risk factors were assessed for development of BOS grade 1 (21-35% decline in FEV1) and progression from grade 1 to grade 2 (36-50% decline in FEV1): age

CT findings in bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia (BOOP) with radiographic, clinical, and histologic correlation.

The CT features of 12 patients with bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia (BOOP) were reviewed and correlated with clinical history, histologic specimens, and chest radiography. From our series, a spectrum of CT findings of parenchymal lung involvement in BOOP emerged. Focal nodular or mass-like opacities were found in 42% (5 of 12). Areas of consolidation resembling pneumonia were seen in 33% (4 of 12). Peripheral subpleural reticular opacities were identified in 25% (3 of 12). Patchy ground glass infiltrates were seen in 8% (1 of 12). One patient demonstrated a mixed pattern consisti

Treatment Options for Bronchiolitis Obliterans Secondary to Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation in Children: A Systematic Review.

Bronchiolitis obliterans (BO) is a chronic obstructive lung disease affecting bronchioles and smaller airways, often secondary to infection, hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), or lung transplantation. Despite its associated morbidity and mortality post-HCT, no standard treatment exists. This systematic review aimed to compare treatment outcomes for post-HCT BO in children. Eligible studies were retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science using terms "bronchiolitis obliterans" and "hematopoietic stem cell transplantation," including clinical trials, cohorts, cross-sectional studies

Pirfenidone for the treatment of bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome related to chronic graft-versus-host disease.

Bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) is a severe form of chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) following allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT), with a 5-year survival rate of 40%. Currently, there is no curative therapy for BOS. Preclinical data suggest that pirfenidone, an antifibrotic drug, may benefit small airway fibrosis in HCT-associated BOS. A single-arm, open-label, 56-week phase 1 trial with 56-month extension evaluated pirfenidone's tolerability, safety, and efficacy in patients with BOS. Efficacy was measured using pulmonary function tests (PFTs), quantitative comput

An Autopsy Case of Bronchiolitis Obliterans Associated With Oral Lichen Planus and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

We report the autopsy case of a 66-year-old woman with indolent B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) who underwent repeated chemotherapy for 18 years. Two and a half years ago, she developed oral lichen planus and began corticosteroid treatment. Lichen planus recurred repeatedly with corticosteroid reduction. Obstructive ventilation impairment and respiratory failure had progressed two years ago. She was admitted to the hospital due to cytomegalovirus infection and died of respiratory failure. An autopsy revealed bronchiolitis obliterans, oral lichen planus, and recurrence of pre-existing NHL. Th
