The role of the parietal cortex in sensorimotor transformations and action coding.

The picture of the human cortical motor system has fully changed in the last two decades. In the light of new data, the notion of a motor system devoted solely to action execution, strictly isolated from the sensory system, is not sustainable. There is evidence that parietal areas are strictly connected to frontal areas and these connections build up sensorimotor circuits aimed at interacting with objects in the environment, and at understanding actions. They are known as the canonic neuron system and mirror neuron system, respectively. These circuits are part of the classic dorsal stream. Rec

Neighborhood amenities and mobility in older adults.

Diversity of neighborhood amenities may promote the mobility of older adults. A 2010 community-based sample of 510 adults aged ≥65 years in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and geospatial data from the Esri Business Analyst database (Esri, Inc., Redlands, California) were used to assess associations of neighborhood amenity diversity with mobility. Neighborhoods were defined by census tract, and diversity of amenities was derived by using the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design's neighborhood development index (US Green Building Council, Washington, DC). VRrec: A zero-coding open-source VR body-motion capture tool for behavioral research.

We present VRrec, an open-source, motion-tracking and recording tool for PC-based virtual reality (VR). The tool addresses a persistent gap in VR-based experimental research by enabling real-time capture of head, hand, and optional body-tracking data without the need to code. VRrec runs discreetly in the background, collecting positional and rotational data as researchers engage participants with third-party VR applications. This design lets researchers use flexible paradigms that leverage off-the-shelf VR content, eliminating the need to build or modify custom software. However, because VRrec

Investigating the Role of MicroRNAs in Mesenchymal Stem Cell Osteogenic Differentiation.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent progenitors that give rise to osteoblasts, which are essential for bone formation, remodeling, and skeletal homeostasis. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), small non-coding RNA molecules, have emerged as critical post-transcriptional regulators of gene expression that fine-tune MSC commitment, osteoblast proliferation, and matrix mineralization. In this review, we first summarize the physiological mechanisms of bone remodeling and the differentiation of MSCs into osteoblasts, with particular attention to the coordinated roles of osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and oste

Comparison of Navier-Stokes and lattice Boltzmann solvers for subject-specific modelling of intracranial aneurysms.

Modelling cardiovascular disease is at the forefront of efforts to use computational tools to assist in the analysis and forecasting of an individual's state of health. To build trust in such tools, it is crucial to understand how different approaches perform when applied to a nominally identical scenario, both singularly and across a population. To examine such differences, we have studied the flow in aneurysms located on the internal carotid artery and middle cerebral artery using the commercial solver Ansys CFX and the open-source code HemeLB. This comparison evaluates both the algorithmic

From Attachment Trauma to Traumatic Attachment: Invisible Injuries of Early Childhood and Subtle Relational Codes of Self-Regulation.

Building on recent contributions by Farina and Schimmenti (2025a), this paper advances a more nuanced framework for their concept of attachment trauma focusing on the underlying mechanisms. The injury of attachment trauma, often concealed within ostensibly ordinary family systems, may leave no explicit memory trace yet manifest as enduring patterns of dysregulation. Instead, it becomes apparent through its clinical consequences such as Complex PTSD, borderline phenomena, dissociative disorders and their various complications. Central to the framework presented in this paper are the concept of

Sequence building block for magnetic resonance spectroscopy on Siemens VE-series scanners.

We present a sequence building block (SBB) that embeds magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) into another sequence on the Siemens VE platform without any custom hardware. This enables dynamic studies such as functional MRS (fMRS), dynamic shimming and frequency correction, and acquisition of navigator images for motion correction. The SBB supports nonlocalised spectroscopy (free induction decay), STimulated Echo Acquisition Mode single voxel spectroscopy, and 1D, 2D and 3D phase-encoded chemical shift imaging. It can embed 1H or X-nuclear MRS into a 1H sequence; and 1H-MRS into an X-nuclear se

Understanding hope at diagnosis: A study among Guatemalan parents of children with cancer.

BACKGROUND: In high-income countries, hope facilitates parental coping and builds the clinical relationship between families of children with cancer and their clinicians. However, the manifestation of hope in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remains poorly understood. Our study explores Guatemalan parents' experiences with hope during the pediatric oncology diagnostic process and aims to identify discrete actions clinicians take to support hope. METHODS: This qualitative study utilized audio-recordings of the diagnostic process and an additional semi-structured interview for 20 famili

Provider Practices and Young Women's Experiences with Provider Self-disclosure during Emergency Contraceptive Visits.

BACKGROUND: Research on the impact of providers disclosing personal contraceptive experiences with patients is limited. In this study, we examine patient and provider perspectives about provider self-disclosure (PSD) of personal contraceptive experiences and its effects on contraceptive decision making and the provider-patient relationship. METHODS: We conducted 18 one-on-one telephone interviews with clinicians who provide contraceptive services to young women and 17 patients seeking emergency contraception from three Bay Area community-based, youth-friendly clinics regarding their contracep

Draft Genome of the Rice Coral Montipora capitata Obtained from Linked-Read Sequencing.

The rice coral, Montipora capitata, is widely distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific and comprises one of the most important reef-building species in the Hawaiian Islands. Here, we describe a de novo assembly of its genome based on a linked-read sequencing approach developed by 10x Genomics. The final draft assembly consisted of 27,870 scaffolds with a N50 size of 186 kb and contained a fairly complete set (81%) of metazoan benchmarking (BUSCO) genes. Based on haploid assembly size (615 Mb) and read k-mer profiles, we estimated the genome size to fall between 600 and 700 Mb, although the high

Cross-professional collaboration between music therapists and special education teachers in autism interventions: a grounded theory qualitative meta-analysis.

This study adopted a grounded theory qualitative meta-analysis approach to examine cross-professional collaboration between music therapists and special education teachers engaged in musical interventions for children with autism spectrum disorders. All reported findings derive from thematic prevalence analysis and theoretical saturation criteria rather than statistical quantification. Through systematic interpretive synthesis of 42 primary qualitative studies published between 2010 and 2024, open coding procedures yielded fifteen core collaboration elements. These elements were organized into

Evaluation of a no-code AI model for detecting periapical radiolucencies: impact of anatomical region on diagnostic performance.

BACKGROUND: To develop a no-code artificial intelligence (AI) model for the detection of apical radiolucent lesions and to assess how lesion location influences the model's diagnostic performance. METHODS: 312 periapical radiographs were retrospectively collected, each accompanied by a corresponding cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan obtained within six months and a radiology report authored by board-certified oral and maxillofacial radiologists. These reports served as the reference standard, and all findings were cross-verified by the primary investigator through CBCT review. The dat

How declines in fertility rates are informing responses within health systems: a protocol for a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Global total fertility rates (TFR) are declining by approximately 1% annually due to factors such as increasing use of contraceptives, urbanisation, a shift in social norms, educational and socioeconomic changes among others. The result is a growing proportion of the world population not meeting their family-building intentions, a shift in global demographic profiles, an ageing population with different social and health system needs and a reduced workforce and taxpayer base to support economic demands. How health systems across the globe are responding to this ‘fertility transit

Social Media Perspectives on a Future HIV Vaccine: Mixed Methods Analysis.

BACKGROUND: As the prospect of an HIV vaccine nears reality, understanding public discourse around the vaccine is essential for informing communication strategies and addressing misinformation. Social media platforms are influential spaces where public narratives form, yet little research has examined discourse around an HIV vaccine, especially on TikTok. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to compare and characterize public discourse about a future HIV vaccine across Twitter (subsequently rebranded X) and TikTok, identifying prevailing themes, sentiments, and rhetorical strategies to inform public he

Perspectives on trauma-informed care from mothers with a history of childhood maltreatment: a qualitative study.

Women who experienced abuse or neglect as children are more likely to have health problems during pregnancy and postpartum, but can be reluctant to seek help due to a lack of trauma-informed services. As part of a larger mixed method study, this component aimed to obtain qualitative data from trauma-exposed new mothers about their health care preferences during the perinatal period with the ultimate goal to design personalized, supportive interventions. Fifty-two trauma-exposed mothers completed a semi-structured interview at seven months postpartum about health care preferences including idea

How can the operating environment for nutrition research be improved in sub-Saharan Africa? The views of African researchers.

Optimal nutrition is critical for human development and economic growth. Sub-Saharan Africa is facing high levels of food insecurity and only few sub-Saharan African countries are on track to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger by 2015. Effective research capacity is crucial for addressing emerging challenges and designing appropriate mitigation strategies in sub-Saharan Africa. A clear understanding of the operating environment for nutrition research in sub-Saharan Africa is a much needed prerequisite. We collected data on the barriers and requirements for conducting nutrition research in su

Digging Deeper into Precision/Personalized Medicine: Cracking the Sugar Code, the Third Alphabet of Life, and Sociomateriality of the Cell.

Precision/personalized medicine is a hot topic in health care. Often presented with the motto "the right drug, for the right patient, at the right dose, and the right time," precision medicine is a theory for rational therapeutics as well as practice to individualize health interventions (e.g., drugs, food, vaccines, medical devices, and exercise programs) using biomarkers. Yet, an alien visitor to planet Earth reading the contemporary textbooks on diagnostics might think precision medicine requires only two biomolecules omnipresent in the literature: nucleic acids (e.g., DNA) and proteins, kn
