Infection with both urinary and intestinal schistosomiasis is prevalent with patchy distribution in Taiz Province, southwest Yemen Arab Republic. Schistosoma haematobium with a prevalence as high as 90% was found in the western, southern, and northern parts of the province. Among school children the overall prevalence was 37%. Infection rates did not differ significantly among various age and sex groups. Three species of Bulinus--B. beccarii, B. truncatus, and B. wrighti--have been found in the province, B. beccarii having the widest distribution and highest density. S. mansoni was found in mo

Reduced snail-parasite compatibility might be at least partially responsible for the decrease observed, over the last three decades, in the prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis on the shores of Lake Kariba, Zambia. To explore this possibility, the prevalences of urinary schistosomiasis in schoolchildren were investigated in three disparate areas of Zambia (Lake Kariba, Lake Bangweulu and Lusaka), and attempts were made to infect the snails that developed from the eggs of snails collected from each of these sites with Schistosoma haematobium from each of the sites. The prevalence of S. haemato

A survey of 500 schoolchildren in Loum in 1968 revealed an overall infection rate of 54.2% with Schistosoma intercalatum and this was the only species of schistosome encountered. In 1972 a number of children were found to be passing schistosome eggs in their urine and these eggs ranged in shape and size from the forms characteristic for S. haematobium to those of S. intercalatum. Preliminary laboratory studies demonstrated that hybridisation between the two species was occurring. Subsequent field surveys showed that the snail hosts for the two parasites (B. rohlfsi for S. haematobium and B. fo

Schistosomiasis may be increasing in West Africa due to the development of water-resource projects which were given a strong impetus by the disastrous Sahelian drought. This report concerns the existing epidemiology of schistosomiasis in West Africa for the Fourth Region of Mauritania, along the Gorgol River. In this area two reservoirs are proposed, to supply a new rice irrigation system. During May and November 1974, field surveys were made to determine the prevalence and intensity of schistosomiasis, and the relevant species of snails. The surveys were made as a basis for designing the irri

Recently, the World Health Organization recognized that efforts to interrupt schistosomiasis transmission through mass drug administration have been ineffective in some regions; one of their new recommended strategies for global schistosomiasis control emphasizes targeting the freshwater snails that transmit schistosome parasites. We sought to identify robust indicators that would enable precision targeting of these snails. At the site of the world's largest recorded schistosomiasis epidemic-the Lower Senegal River Basin in Senegal-intensive sampling revealed positive relationships between int

In 1962, the author conducted a preliminary investigation of bilharziasis in the Republic of the Congo (Brazzaville), at the request of the Government, in order to review existing information and work done on bilharziasis, to assess the prevalence and distribution of the disease, to make observations on the potential snail hosts, and to propose further suitable studies and control measures.Although little time was available for this study, it appears reasonable to conclude that Schistosoma haematobium is confined to a few foci in the west of the country, the main snail host being a new subspec

BACKGROUND: The control of snails intermediate hosts remains an effective strategy to limit schistosomiasis transmission despite the widespread mass de-worming campaign based on praziquantel. Therefore, the study of snail biology could help to improve snails control strategies. This study evaluated the development of Biomphalaria pfeifferi, Bulinus senegalensis and Bulinus truncatus in various water sources and their resistance to salinity.
METHODS: Five day-old juveniles individuals issued from adult snails non-shedding Schistosoma spp cercariae were breed in distilled water, commercial mine

The regular administration of the anthelminthic drug praziquantel (PZQ) to school-aged children (and other high-risk groups) is the cornerstone of schistosomiasis control. Whilst the performance of PZQ against single schistosome species infections is well-known, performance against mixed species infections is less so, as are patterns of re-infection following treatment. To address this, a study using a double treatment with PZQ, administered at 40 mg/kg spaced by 3 weeks, took place in two mixed intestinal-urogenital schistosomiasis foci in northern Cameroon (Bessoum and Ouro-Doukoudje) and in

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by Schistosoma parasites. Schistosoma are obligate parasites of freshwater Biomphalaria and Bulinus snails, thus controlling snail populations is critical to reducing transmission risk. As snails are sensitive to environmental conditions, we expect their distribution is significantly impacted by global change. Here, we used machine learning, remote sensing, and 30 years of snail occurrence records to map the historical and current distribution of forward-transmitting Biomphalaria hosts throughout Brazil. We identified key features influenc

Current control measures for schistosomiasis have only been partially successful in endemic areas due to socioeconomic constraints. One possibility for controlling the disease is to aim at the miracidial stage of the trematode to avoid infecting intermediate snail hosts by introducing more attractive substances for miracidia in the environment. Here, we introduce an accumulation assay of Schistosoma mansoni miracidia using a square glass tube for analysis of the positive responses of miracidia toward several substances, including snail-conditioned water of Biomphalaria glabrata, Bulinus globos

The relationships between three strains of Schistosoma haematobium (Doh, Sô-Tchanhoué and Toho-Todougba; from Benin, West Africa) and their snail hosts were assessed by measurement of several life-history traits, including the infection rate; pre-patent period; cercarial production of each parasite strain; and growth, fecundity and survival of the host snails. Adaptations to its local snail host was found for the Toho-Todougba strain and included a short pre-patent period, a long patent period and production of more cercariae in its local snail host. In contrast, the life-history traits of the

We evaluated the effect of niclosamide treatment and the additional cleaning of basins and pools on the density and infection rate of Bulinus truncatus within the irrigation network of Oudaya. The period prior to molluscicide treatment (January-May) revealed a mean density of 151 snails/m2 in 1995-96 and 127 snails/m2 in 1997-98. After cleaning had started, the mean density prior to molluscicide treatment fell to 84 snails/m2 in 1999-2000. After molluscicide treatment, densities dropped to very low levels only rising again from October. In November 1999-96 mean density reached 150 snails/m2 bu

Four hundred and fifty one human strata living in the three fishing villages of Ndiaga, Kabukanga and Rwabikongoro along Lake Albert shore in Kibale District were examined for S. mansoni infection using Kato/Katz method. Of the 451 people, 409 (90.7%) were found infected with S. mansoni with geometric mean egg count of 561.3 eggs per gram (epg) faeces. Males had significantly higher mean egg counts than females, 608.3 epg and 415.6 epg respectively. All S. mansoni infected individuals were treated with praziquantel at 40 mg/kg body weight. Other common parasites observed were Asaris lumbricoid

Three years after the first cases of urinary schistosomiasis infection were reported in the village of Mbodiene, Senegal, Schistosoma haematobium eggs were found in 87% of the inhabitants of this village; 30% were heavily infected (> 50 eggs per 10 mL urine). The prevalence of infection was very high in all age groups, but children showed more intense infections. No difference between sexes was found. In the special situation of a very high prevalence, test strips for proteinuria and haematuria are not very useful for the individual diagnosis of S. haematobium infection. Six and 12 weeks after

Summary Akka oasis, in the province of Tata, southern Morocco, is one of the oldest foci of urinary schistosomiasis in Morocco where transmission is still taking place. We report the results of two studies: a cross-sectional snail survey investigated the distribution of Bulinus truncatus in relation to habitat factors in the Akka traditional irrigation system. The presence of aquatic vegetation, especially Potamogeton sp. was identified as a key factor determining snail occurrence and abundance in canals, impoundments and isolated small puddles and streamlets in the Akka riverbed. In a partici

A total of 1535 persons of different age, sex and occupation from 5 villages (Tanan, El-Sad, Sandiun, Kalama and Taha-nob) in Qalyoubia Governorate in Nile Delta were subjected to clinical, stool, urine and intradermal tests accompanied by a questionnaire for 500 of them. Snail vectors of Schistosome parasites were collected from 2 villages (El-Sad and Taha-nob) and snail densities in the waterways as well as the prevalence rate of infection with schistosomal cercariae were recorded. The results revealed that the average prevalence rate of Schistosoma haematobium in the 5 cillages was 4.9% (ra

The freshwater snail Bulinus truncatus is an important intermediate host for trematode parasites causing urogenital schistosomiasis, a tropical disease affecting over 150 million people. Despite its medical importance, uncertainty remains about its global distribution and the potential impacts of climate change on its future spread. Here, we investigate the distribution of B. truncatus, combining the outputs of correlative and mechanistic modelling methods to fully capitalize on both experimental and occurrence data of the species and to create a more reliable distribution forecast than ever c

BACKGROUND: Urogenital schistosomiasis due to Schistosoma haematobium is a major public health problem in Mauritania, but little is known about its epidemiology in many areas of the country, particularly in the lake zones. The objectives of the present parasitological and malacological study were to assess the prevalence and intensity of urogenital schistosomiasis among school children in Kankossa and Oued Rawdha lakes, southern Mauritania, and determine the species of intermediate host snails and the prevalence of snails with schistosome.
METHODS: A school-based epidemiological survey was co
