Zinc (Zn) reduces cadmium (Cd)-induced toxicity in the liver although it increases Cd tissue burden in some conditions; hence, the present study is designed to study the relationships between Cd, Zn and antioxidants in the liver of rats exposed to Cd. Livers of male rats which received orally relatively high doses of Cd (200 mg Cd/L as Cd chloride or Cd (200 mg/L)+Zn (500 mg Zn as Zn chloride) during five weeks, were investigated. Cd induced an accumulation of Cd and Zn in parallel to depletion in important variables (GSH, GSH/GSSG, CuZn-SOD and GPx activities) and to elevation in others (Cd/Z

The route of Cd uptake influences the distribution of Cd, other metals, and metallothionein (MT). Although intestinal MT levels related to the tissue mass did not show proximodistal gradients after sc administration of CdCl2, orally administered high doses of CdCl2 increased mucosal MT levels longitudinally from the duodenum to the ileum. The gradient abolished when the mucosal MT level was related to the intestinal length. To further elucidate this finding, three groups of rats were studied: a control group, a group receiving dietary CdCl2, and a group receiving sc injections of CdCl2. The sm

Cd, a naturally occurring endocrine toxin found in tobacco leaves, originates in the environment and enters the body through inhalation, targeting the lungs and kidneys. A study published by Larsen-Carey et al. revealed that cadmium mediates the persistence of classically activated lung macrophages to exacerbate lung injury. The research discovered a novel role for PPAR γ as an effective regulator for the alternative activation of macrophages in response to Cd and Cd-induced lung injury.

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the most injurious heavy metals, affecting plant growth and development. Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) was discovered in plants in 1995, and it is since known to act as a multifunctional molecule to alleviate abiotic and biotic stresses, especially Cd stress. Endogenously triggered or exogenously applied melatonin re-establishes the redox homeostasis by the improvement of the antioxidant defense system. It can also affect the Cd transportation and sequestration by regulating the transcripts of genes related to the major metal transport system, as well as the i

A systematic high-pressure study of the CdNx (x = 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) system is performed by using the first-principles calculation method in combination with the particle swarm optimization algorithm. We proposed four stable high-pressure phases (P4mbm-CdN2, Cmmm-CdN4, I4̅2d-CdN4, and C2/c-CdN5) and one metastable high-pressure phase (C2/m-CdN6), for which the structural frames are composed of a diatomic quasi-molecule N2, standard armchair N-chain, S-type bent armchair N-chain, zigzag-antizigzag N-chain, and N14 network structure. Among them, the novel zigzag-antizigzag N-chain and N14 networ

Cadmium (Cd) is a non-essential transition metal which is introduced into the biosphere by various anthropogenic activities. Environmental pollution with Cd poses a major health risk and Cd toxicity has been extensively researched over the past decades. This review aims at changing the perspective by discussing protection mechanisms available to counteract a Cd insult. Antioxidants, induction of antioxidant enzymes, and complexation of Cd to glutathione (GSH) and metallothionein (MT) are the most potent protective measures to cope with Cd-induced oxidative stress. Furthermore, protection mecha

Cadmium and cadmium compounds are contaminants of the environment, food, and drinking water and are important constituents of cigarette smoke. Cd exposure has also been associated with airborne particulate CdO and with Cd-containing quantum dots in medical therapy. Adverse cadmium effects reported in the literature have stimulated during recent years an ongoing discussion to better elucidate cadmium outcomes at cell and molecular level. The present work is designed to gain an insight into the mechanism of p53 impairment at gene and protein level to understand Cd-induced resistance to apoptosis

Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a common model organism for investigation of metal stress. This green alga produces phytochelatins in the presence of metal ions. The influence of cadmium is of main interest, because it is a strong activator of phytochelatin synthase. Cell wall bound and intracellular cadmium content was determined after exposition to 70 µm CdCl(2), showing the main portion of the metal outside the cell. Nevertheless, imported cadmium was sufficient to cause significant changes in thiolpeptide metabolism and its transcriptional regulation. Modern analytical approaches enable new i

The title compound, [Cd(C(4)H(4)O(4))(H(2)O)(2)](n), has been synthesized under hydro-thermal conditions. The asymmetric unit consists of one Cd(2+) cation, one succinate anion and two aqua ligands. The Cd atoms present a distorted penta-gonal bipyramidal coordination and are bridged into layers parallel to (201) by succinate ligands.

* Cadmium (Cd) stress increases cell metabolic demand for sulfur, reducing equivalents, and carbon skeletons, to sustain phytochelatin biosynthesis for Cd detoxification. In this condition the induction of potentially acidifying anaplerotic metabolism in root tissues may be expected. For these reasons the effects of Cd accumulation on anaplerotic metabolism, glycolysis, and cell pH control mechanisms were investigated in maize (Zea mays) roots. * The study compared root apical segments, excised from plants grown for 24 h in a nutrient solution supplemented, or not, with 10 microM CdCl(2), usin

Acute exposure to high concentrations of cadmium fumes may cause acute chemical pneumonitis with a possibly fatal outcome. The etiologic diagnosis of acute cadmium intoxication from inhaled fumes may be difficult and can be confused with other forms of acute respiratory failure. We report on a case of a fit 53 year-old man who was exposed to cadmium fumes after flame-cutting an alloy containing around 10% of cadmium for a period of 60-75 minutes. He developed severe chemical pneumonitis and died 19 days after exposure.

We studied the cardiotoxicity in magnesium (Mg)-deficient male rats fed 50 micrograms/g Cd for 45 consecutive days. Cd at a low concentration (0.28 ppm) in the heart induced cardiotoxic effects manifested by a decrease of the heart rate and weight and histopathological changes in the presence of Mg deficiency through Cd supplementation to a normal diet did not induce any cardiotoxic effect. Cardiac output (CO) did not increase in response to the decrease in the total peripheral resistance (TPR) in the Mg-deficient rats fed Cd, suggesting that supplementation of Cd to the Mg-deficient diet may

The formation and transformation of ferrihydrite-cadmium (Fh-Cd) coprecipitates play a critical role in controlling the mobility and bioavailability of Cd in soils. However, the impact of biochar particles (BCs), which are widely applied to agricultural soils, on the transformation of metastable Fh-Cd coprecipitates remains unclear. Herein, we investigated Cd behavior during the aging of Fh-BCs-Cd coprecipitates synthesized by using different BCs: pristine BC, graphitized BC (BCP), BC enriched with oxyl groups (BCO), and ash-removed BC (BCM). The incorporation of pristine BC, BCP, and BCO sign

Excessive urinary calcium is the major risk of renal tubular dysfunction and urinary stone formation. We examined the association of elevated urinary cadmium with urinary stones and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in 1,085 study residents of 13 cadmium-contaminated villages. Elevated urinary cadmium was significantly correlated with urinary stone and CKD. Elevated urinary cadmium appeared to increase risk of urinary stone and CKD; ORs and 95 % CIs were 2.73 (1.16, 6.42) and 3.73 (2.50, 5.57) after adjusting for other co-variables. This study revealed that elevated urinary stone and CKD induced by

OBJECTIVES: Literature survey has suggested that cadmium (Cd) in the general environment is more abundant in the northern part of the coast on the sea of Japan. The present survey was initiated to examine if the exposure to Cd in the area has been higher than other parts of Japan, and if so, the higher exposure has been associated with tubular dysfunction among the local residents.
METHODS: In three prefectures of Akita, Yamagata and Ishikawa in the region, adult women (about 700 subjects per prefecture) were invited to participate in the survey. Each of the participants provided informed con

The aim of the present study was to establish to what degree a one-year exposure of rat females to 5, 50 and 100 mg Cd/l affects the weight of the submandibular glands and their cadmium levels. We observed a decrease in the weight of the submandibular glands in the rat females from Groups I, II and III, compared to the control rats. We also found an increase in cadmium levels in the submandibular glands in Groups I, II and III, in comparison to the control. The highest cadmium concentration was noted in the submandibular glands in Group III, which was accompanied by the greatest weight reducti

Nephrotoxic effects of cadmium exposure are well established in humans and experimental animals. An early manifestation of such toxicity is calciuria a few hours after injection of CdMT in rats. Protection against calciuria and other adverse effects such as proteinuria (occurring later) is offered by pretreatment with Cd, which effectively induces metallothionein synthesis. In the present experiment, one group of animals was given pretreatment with CdCl2 to induce metallothionein synthesis. The comparison group was left without pretreatment. The distribution of Cd from a normally nephrotoxic d
