Method for the analysis of total fluoride in fluoride-releasing dental varnishes.

Today's fluoride-releasing varnishes (F-varnish) contain a wide variety of ingredients which present analytical challenges for measuring their total fluoride content. This study reports improved methods to measure fluoride content in F-varnishes. Six different commercially available F-varnishes that contain difluorosilane (0.1% F) or NaF (2.26% F) alone or in combination with calcium-phosphates were analyzed. In a vial, 1-3 drops (0.05-0.15 g) of varnish product was dispensed, dissolved in chloroform, equilibrated in TISAB and analyzed via fluoride ion-selective electrode. The average weight p

Update on fluoride prophylaxis.

Fluoride is a chemical element widely distributed throughout nature. In our bodies, fluoride is considered a trace element, meaning mineral salts that, although present only in small quantities or even trace amounts, perform important biological functions. Fluoride is present in the body primarily associated with calcium, for which it has a high affinity, in teeth and bones. It is rapidly absorbed in the stomach and proximal small intestine, and peak serum levels are reached within 40-60 minutes. Fluoride absorption from water in the form of fluoride ions is faster and more complete than that

Relationship between bone fluoride content and histological evidence of calcification defects in osteoporotic women treated long term with sodium fluoride.

Fluoride treatment is used to increase bone formation and cancellous bone mass in patients suffering from postmenopausal osteoporosis with vertebral fractures. Patients submitted to similar therapeutic protocols have shown various histological responses to the treatment, some developing calcification defects and others not. In fact, the bone histological response to fluoride salts depends on the cumulative uptake of fluoride by bone. To clarify the relationship between the presence of calcification defects (identified by the presence of mottled bone and linear formation defects) and the bone f

Reversal of fluorosis in children.

Large populations consume fluoride-contaminated water, especially in developing countries. The toxic effects of fluorosis take three forms: clinical, skeletal and dental. Research thus far indicates that the manifestations of fluorosis are irreversible. However, it has been observed that the ingestion of calcium, vitamin C or vitamin D, individually, is effective in protection from fluoride toxicity to a certain extent. Therefore, a double blind control trial was conducted to examine the effect of a combination of calcium, vitamin D3 and ascorbic acid supplementation in fluorosis-affected chil

Remineralization agents - new and effective or just marketing hype?

This is a review of the need for better remineralization and of the status of calcium-based remineralizing agents for use in anti-caries toothpastes. Use of fluoride toothpastes has markedly reduced caries. However, the decline may be over or in reverse. There is a limit to what fluoride alone can do; complementary agents are needed. Using plaque as a reservoir for calcium-based agents holds promise. Plaque fluid is already supersaturated with respect to relevant calcium phosphates at neutral pH; extra calcium may lead to surface-blocking and sub-optimal lesion consolidation. However, at cario

Proton microprobe determination of fluorine profiles in the enamel and dentine of erupting incisors from sheep given low and high daily doses of fluoride.

Developmental defects in incisors were induced by daily oral ingestion of sodium fluoride solutions. Teeth extracted at eruption from sheep that had been subjected to four different fluoride regimens--0.2 or 0.5 mg F/kg body weight daily for 6 months, 2 or 6 mg F/kg body weight daily for 21 days--were analysed for fluorine by gamma emission using a proton microprobe. Calcium and zinc profiles were also measured using proton-induced X-ray emission. Diffuse opacities, similar in appearance to mild human fluorosis, were produced by the first two regimens, whereas the last two produced hypoplastic

The Cariostatic Mechanisms of Fluoride-An Updated Review.

Fluoride remains the keystone of evidence-based caries prevention by stabilizing the mineral balance at the tooth-biofilm-saliva interface. Contemporary understanding emphasizes a predominantly post-eruptive, topical mode of action where fluoride inhibits demineralization and accelerates remineralization. This interfacial catalysis is reinforced by pH-responsive calcium-fluoride-like reservoirs that release fluoride during acid challenges. While community water fluoridation confers population-level reductions, the most effective approach is sustaining low-level fluoride in the biofilm environm

The effect of fluoride on apatite structure and growth.

Fluoride participates in many aspects of calcium phosphate formation in vivo and has enormous effects on the process and on the nature and properties of formed mineral. The most well-documented effect of fluoride is that this ion substitutes for a column hydroxyl in the apatite structure, giving rise to a reduction of crystal volume and a concomitant increase in structural stability. In the process of enamel mineralization during amelogenesis (a unique model for the cell-mediated formation of well-crystallized carbonatoapatite), free fluoride ions in the fluid phase are supposed to accelerate

The Effect of CaCl2 and Basicity of PAC on Fluoride Removal by PAC-PDMDAAC Coagulation.

Fluoride contamination in water sources poses significant risks to human health and ecosystems, necessitating effective treatment strategies. This study investigates the influence of calcium chloride (CaCl2) and the basicity of polyaluminum chloride (PAC) on fluoride removal using PAC-PDMDAAC coagulation. Through systematic jar tests, the effects of varying PAC basicity (0.5, 1.0, and 2.0) and CaCl2 addition sequences were examined under different fluoride concentrations (1.0, 3.0, and 10.0 mg/L). Results indicate that PAC with lower basicity (B = 0.5) exhibits superior fluoride removal effici

X-ray microanalysis of fluoride distribution in microfracture calluses in cancellous iliac bone from osteoporotic patients treated with fluoride and untreated.

Fluoride is able to augment cancellous bone mass in vertebral osteoporosis but is responsible for osteoarticular side effects in which microfractures are thought to be involved. During healing of these microfractures, a callus is formed all around the cancellous fracture line. Our hypothesis is that in fluoride-treated osteoporotic patients, calluses are bone sites where fluoride is focally deposited at a high concentration, and this could induce a local defect of calcification with a poor healing of microfractures. Our aim was to validate this hypothesis on several calluses following microfra

The effects of ruthenium red, an inhibitor of calcium-induced calcium release, on phasic myometrial contractions.

Ruthenium red inhibits calcium-induced calcium release from the ryanodine-sensitive intracellular calcium stores; this study sought to evaluate the effects of ruthenium red on agonist-stimulated phasic myometrial contractions. Ruthenium red was found to significantly inhibit in vitro isometric contractions stimulated in response to oxytocin, prostaglandin F2 alpha, aluminum fluoride, potassium chloride, ionomycin, and Bay K 8644. These observations provide support for the hypothesis that calcium-induced calcium release from ryanodine-sensitive calcium stores is an important event during agonis

Diffuse Increased Sodium Fluoride Gastric Activity in a Patient With Hypercalcemia.

Increased extraosseous uptake of sodium fluoride can be visualized because of many different etiologies. A 62-year-old man with a history of osteoporosis had an F-sodium fluoride PET/CT scan for accessing chest pain caused by an accident. The images showed multiple fractures. Unexpectedly, diffuse activity was noted in the gastric wall, which was suggestive of possible hypercalcemia. The serum calcium level confirmed the patient had hypercalcemia.

Short-term effects of different toothpaste formulations on total salivary calcium: A randomized crossover study.

OBJECTIVES: Dental calculus formation can be inhibited by toothpastes containing pyrophosphate, which chelates calcium ions and prevents hydroxyapatite crystal formation. Although pyrophosphate may also influence salivary calcium availability, the short-term effects of commercially available toothpaste formulations on salivary calcium concentrations remain insufficiently characterized. This study investigated and compared the short-term effects of three fluoride toothpastes on salivary calcium concentration. METHODS: A randomized, three-treatment, three-period crossover trial was conducted in

Comparative Evaluation of the Remineralizing Potential of Flaxseed Paste, Chicken Eggshell Paste, and Fluoride Toothpaste on the Enamel of Primary Teeth Using Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis: An In-Vitro Study.

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries in primary teeth remains a critical public health challenge globally. Although fluoride toothpaste is the standard care for remineralization, its efficacy is limited by the requirement for bioavailable calcium and phosphate ions and its diminished performance on irregular dental surfaces. This study evaluates natural alternatives for dental care, focusing on their mineralizing potential compared to fluoride. AIM: This study aims to assess and compare the efficacy of remineralization by flaxseed paste and chicken eggshell paste to that of standard fluoride toothpast
