Two new records of flies causing myiasis from Saudi Arabia with a survey of flies parasitizing goats and sheep in Jazan Region.

Despite the medical, veterinary and forensic relevance of myiasis-causing flies, knowledge of their diversity in Saudi Arabia is limited especially in the southern region. Therefore, a survey of myiasis-causing flies in the Jazan region was carried out using Red Top Fly Catcher traps baited with either decomposing beef liver or a lure composed primarily from fishmeal during the period April 2013-March 2014. Twelve known species were identified and recorded in this study, seven species of them belonging to Calliphoridae (Chrysomya, Lucilia, and Hemipyrella) and five species belonging to Sarcoph

An aural myiasis case in a 54-year-old male farmer in Korea.

A 54-year-old male farmer residing in Chunchon, Korea, complaining of blood tinged discharge and tinnitus in the left ear for two days, was examined in August 16, 1996. Otoscopic examination revealed live maggots from the ear canal. The patient did not complain of any symptoms after removal of maggots. Five maggots recovered were identified as the third stage larvae of Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae). This is the first record of aural myiasis in Korea.

Effects of two commonly and limited used chemosterilants on Lucilia sericata egg surface sterilization.

Maggot therapy (MT) is the most common medical use of sterile fly larvae of Lucilia sericata and other species of the family Calliphoridae as an alternative to surgery and long-term antiseptic therapy in the treatment of deep and infected non-healing wounds. Effective and reliable MT requires an aseptic technique to prevent bacterial infection of the wound. However, due to the habitat of Calliphoridae flies, the outer surface of their eggs is often contaminated with bacteria. In this study, Lucilia sericata eggs were sterilized using two techniques. NaOCI (sodium hypochlorite), which is widely

Phantom pain as an adverse effect after maggot (Lucilia sericata) debridement therapy: a case study.

Maggot debridement therapy, also known as larval therapy, is a well known method of treatment for hard-to-heal and intractable wounds. This case study describes severe phantom pain as a rare adverse event of maggot therapy in patients after post-traumatic amputation of the leg. We also hypothesise and discuss the possibility that the phantom pain may be a result of maggot activity, not only through tissue debridement but also through nerve nourishment and nerve regeneration.

Neonatal umbilical myiasis with sepsis.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The authors report a 9-day old neonate from a rural area with umbilical myiasis caused by fly larvae of Cochliomyia hominivorax. The blowfly causing this infestation belongs to the family Calliphoridae (Diptera) and the genus Cochliomyia that usually infests only open wounds of animals. The new-world screw-worm fly Cochliomyia hominivorax, is an obligate ectoparasite of domestic and wild animals, and in some cases may affect humans. This is the rare reported case of neonatal umbilical myiasis with sepsis in the world literature.

A novel real-time PCR for New World screwworm fly (Cochliomyia hominivorax) and its application in a non-destructive multiplex for efficient detection of screwworm flies.

Surveillance and diagnostics are critical for the early detection, containment and eradication of exotic pests. For the screwworm fly, this is usually via targeted surveillance and exclusion testing of trap-caught flies, as well as the identification of larvae associated with myiasis wounds. We present a specific and sensitive real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the detection of the New World screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax Coquerel (Diptera: Calliphoridae). The assay targets the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene from adult flies or larvae and retains high analyti

Patient with tracheostomy parasitized in hospital by larvae of the screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax.

Myiasis is the infestation of living vertebrates by fly larvae that feed for at least part of their development on the host's dead or living tissues, body substances, or ingested food. The occurrences of traumatic myiasis in humans and animals in urban and rural environments represent serious economic and public health concerns. This study reports a 49-year-old tracheostomized man undergoing chemotherapy treatment who was parasitized in the hospital in São Gonçalo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, by larvae of the screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in the thoracic ca

Effects of clonazepam and flunitrazepam on the development cycle of Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy 1830 and their forensic implications.

Benzodiazepines are commonly identified in drug overdose deaths worldwide. However, research on their effects on the most common necrophagous insect species is limited. In this context, the current study investigated the effects of clonazepam and flunitrazepam on the development cycle of Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 (Diptera: Calliphoridae). Three blow fly colonies were reared under controlled laboratory conditions (24℃, 50% humidity, 12:12 light-dark cycle), and the experiment was carried out in triplicate. A solution of 4 mg of clonazepam and 2 mg of flunitrazepam, each dissolve

Intranasal myiasis: a rare complication of transnasal skull base surgery.

A 57-year-old woman with a history of atypical intracranial meningioma had undergone multiple craniotomies and endoscopic skull base procedures over several years. She presented most recently with nasal discharge consisting of intranasal larvae. Isolated organisms from the nasal cavity and maxillary sinus were identified as blow fly larvae (Calliphoridae family). The patient was treated with transnasal debridement and antibiotic therapy. The organisms were successfully eradicated and she is free from further signs of infection. Intranasal myiasis is an unusual complication of anterior skull ba

The dog mummy, the ticks and the louse fly: Archaeological report of severe ectoparasitosis in Ancient Egypt.

The authors report the first archaeological case of dog ectoparasitosis in Ancient Egypt. The study of a mummified young dog dated to the Roman period suggests a significant infestation by two blood sucking ectoparasites, respectively the brown dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus Latreille, 1806 (Acari: Ixodidae), the louse fly Hippobosca longipennis Fabricius, 1805 (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) as well as puparia of sarcosaprophagous flies (Diptera: Sarcophagidae and Calliphoridae), a potential source of myiasis. All of these species are known to be potential vectors of different pathogens which may

Fate of mercury accumulated by blowflies feeding on fish carcasses.

Because fish represent the principal methylmercury (MeHg) pool in the water column of freshwater systems, MeHg released from their carcasses could represent an important flux to the environment. Necrophagous invertebrates such as fly larvae can play an important role in this Hg recycling. We studied Hg accumulation by blowflies (Diptera, Calliphoridae) feeding on beached fish carcasses in the field. We found that the MeHg these flies accumulated as larvae is retained in their pupal stage but is eliminated by the adult following emergence. We conclude that calliphorids possess an efficient mech

Allium sativum, Rosmarinus officinalis, and Salvia officinalis Essential Oils: A Spiced Shield against Blowflies.

Blowflies are known vectors of many foodborne pathogens and unintentional human ingestion of maggots by meat consumption may lead to intestinal myiasis. In fact, the control of insect pests is an important aspect of industrial and home-made food processing and blowflies (Diptera: Calliphoridae), which are among the most important pests involved in the damage of meat products. Most spices, largely used in food preparations and industry, contain essential oils that are toxic and repellent against insects and exert antimicrobial activity. In this study, we assessed the electro-antennographic resp

Bioaccumulation of cadmium in common green bottle fly Lucilia sericata and its impact on insect development - prospect for use in feed and food production.

This study aimed to investigate the bioaccumulation of cadmium from natural feed substrate and substrate enriched with CdCl2 and CdO by the common green bottle fly, Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae). Cadmium was determined in all developmental stages (larvae, adults, and puparial cases) of L. sericata, and its accumulation was positively correlated with concentrations in insect diets. Higher bioaccumulation factors of Cd were found in larvae and adults fed with naturally contaminated liver tissues (1.3-3.9) than those fed with liver enriched with cadmium in the form of inorganic compou

Using weather data to predict the presence of Lucilia spp. on sheep farms in New Zealand.

Flystrike remains an important animal health issue on New Zealand sheep farms. To date no useful predictive tool to assist farmers to develop control options has been available. The aim of this study was to use National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) virtual climate station data in New Zealand to develop a weather-based model to accurately predict the presence of Lucilia spp. on sheep farms throughout New Zealand. Three LuciTrap® baited fly traps were positioned on each of eight sheep farms throughout New Zealand (5 in the North Island and 3 in the South Island). The traps

Furcuncular Myiasis of the Scalp Caused by Chrysomya bezziana.

We report a rare case of furuncular myiasis in a 7-year-old boy presenting with a discharging nodule over the scalp. The report details the clinical presentation, examination findings, and dermoscopic features of furuncular myiasis. To the best of our knowledge, Chrysomya bezziana has never been reported to cause furuncular myiasis. In vivo and ex vivo dermoscopy features help in diagnosis by obviating the need for microscopy.
