Prevention of posterior capsular opacification.

Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) is a common complication of cataract surgery. The development of PCO is due to a combination of the processes of proliferation, migration, and transdifferentiation of residual lens epithelial cells (LECs) on the lens capsule. In the past decades, various forms of PCO prevention have been examined, including adjustments of techniques and intraocular lens materials, pharmacological treatments, and prevention by interfering with biological processes in LECs. The only method so far that seems effective is the implantation of an intraocular lens with sharp edg

ZEPTO-assisted pseudophakic capsulotomy: Precision pulse technology for management of capsular contraction syndrome.

We describe a novel technique that uses precision pulse capsulotomy (PPC) to perform a secondary capsulotomy for the management of anterior capsule contraction syndrome (ACCS), a condition that comprises a late complication after cataract surgery and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Micropulse secondary capsulotomy offers a controlled and safe approach for patients with severe anterior capsule contraction syndrome and may be considered as an alternative surgical technique.

Comparing Rod-Mediated Dark Adaptation in Older Adults before and after Cataract Surgery.

PURPOSE: Studies on age-related macular degeneration often use rod-mediated dark adaptation (RMDA) to evaluate macular functional health, studying eyes with cataract and pseudophakic eyes within the same sample. We examine a poorly understood issue-whether rod intercept time (RIT), a measure of RMDA, changes after cataract surgery and intraocular lens (IOL) insertion as compared to RIT before cataract surgery. Cataract may serve as a filter reducing photo-bleach magnitude prior to surgery, biasing RMDA interpretation. METHODS: A pre-/post-cataract surgery design was used. Persons with nuclear

Cascade reaction triggering and photothermal AuNPs@MIL MOFs doped intraocular lens for enhanced posterior capsular opacification prevention.

Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) is the most common complication after cataract surgery. Present strategies can't meet the clinical needs of long-term prevention. This research reports a novel intraocular lens (IOL) bulk material with high biocompatibility and synergistic therapy. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) doped MIL-101-NH2 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (AuNPs@MIL) was firstly fabricated via in situ reductions. Then the functionalized MOFs were uniformly mixed with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy) ethyl acrylate (EA) to form the nanoparticle doped polymer (AuNPs@MIL-

Role of Decorin in the Lens and Ocular Diseases.

Decorin is an archetypal member of the small leucine-rich proteoglycan gene family and is involved in various biological functions and many signaling networks, interacting with extra-cellular matrix (ECM) components, growth factors, and receptor tyrosine kinases. Decorin also modulates the growth factors, cell proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis. It has been reported to be involved in many ischemic and fibrotic eye diseases, such as congenital stromal dystrophy of the cornea, anterior subcapsular fibrosis of the lens, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, et al. Furthermore, recent evidence

[Laser-induced damage to the cornea after YAG laser surgery of anterior segment structures].

Laser photodestruction (LPD) of tissues is the basis of modern laser reconstructive surgery in ophthalmology. The most common laser technologies based on LPD mechanisms include YAG laser capsulotomy (discission) (LD) of secondary cataract and YAG laser iridectomy (LIE) for glaucoma. Laser reconstructive interventions for secondary cataract, as well as LIE, have a number of advantages over traditional surgery, but at the same time are associated with the risk of complications, including in the cornea. Corneal endothelium is the most susceptible to laser damage, while Descemet's membrane and cor

The Relationship Between the Change of Intraocular Lens Position and Capsular Bend After Cataract Surgery.

PURPOSE: To explore the relationship between the change in intraocular lens (IOL) position and capsular bend after cataract surgery. METHODS: Patients underwent phacoemulsification and IOL implantation (Alcon Laboratories, Inc). Patients were divided into two groups based on preoperative axial length: long axial length group (axial length ⩾ 26 mm) and normal axial length group (axial length > 22 but < 26 mm). Swept-source optical coherence tomography was performed at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after mydriasis to obtain postoperative aqueous depth (PAD) and capsular bend index (CBI).

The human anterior lens capsule--an attempted chemical debridement of epithelial cells by ethylenediaminetetracetic acid (EDTA) and trypsin.

The addition of edetic acid (EDTA) or trypsin to the infusion during a simulated extracapsular cataract extraction on cadaver eyes facilitates the removal of lens epithelial cells from the anterior capsule. Modification of the chemical composition of infusions used during extracapsular surgery may maximise lens epithelial cell removal and hence reduce the incidence of opacification of the posterior capsule after cataract extraction.

Microplasma Induced Cell Morphological Changes and Apoptosis of Ex Vivo Cultured Human Anterior Lens Epithelial Cells - Relevance to Capsular Opacification.

Inducing selective or targeted cell apoptosis without affecting large number of neighbouring cells remains a challenge. A plausible method for treatment of posterior capsular opacification (PCO) due to remaining lens epithelial cells (LECs) by reactive chemistry induced by localized single electrode microplasma discharge at top of a needle-like glass electrode with spot size ~3 μm is hereby presented. The focused and highly-localized atmospheric pressure microplasma jet with electrode discharge could induce a dose-dependent apoptosis in selected and targeted individual LECs, which could be con

Photodynamic therapy could serve as a promising approach to prevent posterior capsular opacification.

Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) causes the vision that has been restored after cataract surgery to become blurred again. YAG laser treatment for PCO not only incurs additional costs but also poses risks of complications, including glaucoma and retinal disorders. Effective prevention and management of PCO remain an area requiring active research. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) utilizes a photosensitizer (PS) to transform oxygen into reactive oxygen species (ROS) under specific wavelengths of light, thereby inducing apoptosis. Given its minimal invasiveness and high specificity, PDT has been

Transcriptome alterations in sf3b4-depleted zebrafish: Insights into cataract formation in retinitis pigmentosa model.

Posterior subcapsular cataract (PSC) frequently develops as a complication in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Despite numerous scientific investigations, the intricate pathomechanisms underlying cataract formation in individuals affected by RP remain elusive. Therefore, our study aims to elucidate the potential pathogenesis of cataracts in an RP model using splicing factor subunit 3b (sf3b4) mutant zebrafish. By analyzing our previously published transcriptome dataset, we identified that, in addition to RP, cataract was listed as the second condition in our transcriptomic analysis. Fu

Intraocular pressure increase after Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy and anterior segment optical coherence tomography analysis.

This study is to determine whether post-procedure intraocular pressure (IOP) increase is associated with the anterior chamber angle in cases of Neodymium: yttrium-aluminum garnet (Nd: YAG) laser capsulotomy. The study included 51 eyes with posterior capsule opacification. Initial IOP values of the patients were compared with IOP values without intraocular pressure-lowering administration at the end of the 1st hour, 1st day, 3rd day, and 7th day after Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy. The anterior segment angle configuration was evaluated using anterior segment optical coherence tomography analysis wit
