Circulating omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and subclinical brain abnormalities on MRI in older adults: the Cardiovascular Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Consumption of tuna or other broiled or baked fish, but not fried fish, is associated with fewer subclinical brain abnormalities on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We investigated the association between plasma phospholipid omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), objective biomarkers of exposure, and subclinical brain abnormalities on MRI. METHODS AND RESULTS: In the community-based Cardiovascular Health Study, 3660 participants aged ≥ 65 underwent brain MRI in 1992-1994, and 2313 were rescanned 5 years later. MRIs were centrally read by neuroradiologists in a standardized,

The basis and management of metabolic abnormalities associated with cardiovascular risk in human immunodeficiency virus infection and its treatment.

The high global prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has been associated with high morbidity and mortality. The advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has, however, dramatically increased survival of patients infected with HIV. These patients now survive to develop metabolic complications of HIV infection and its treatment, including increased predisposition to atherosclerotic disease. HIV infection is normally associated with hypocholesterolaemia, hypertriglyceridaemia, low plasma HDL-cholesterol as well as alterations in other cardiovascular risk factors

Prevalence and prognostic significance of wall-motion abnormalities in adults without clinically recognized cardiovascular disease: the Strong Heart Study.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular wall motion (WM) abnormalities have recognized prognostic significance in patients with coronary or other heart diseases; however, whether abnormal WM predicts adverse events in adults without overt cardiovascular disease has not been assessed. Our objective was to determine whether echocardiographic WM abnormalities predict subsequent cardiovascular events in a population-based sample. METHODS AND RESULTS: Participants (n=2864, mean age 60+/-8 years, 64% women) without clinically evident cardiovascular disease in the second Strong Heart Study examination who had

Sodium valproate-induced cardiovascular abnormalities in the Jcl:ICR mouse fetus: peak sensitivity of gestational day and dose-dependent effect.

Sodium valproate was administered to Jcl:ICR mice in order to determine its effect on cardiovascular development. A single dose of 600 mg/kg of sodium valproate was injected intraperitoneally on gestational days 6, 7, 8, or 9. In same animals, a single dose of 300, 400, 500, or 700 mg/kg was injected on gestational day 7. On day 18 of gestation, dams were laparotomized to observe number of live, dead and resorbed fetuses. In addition, live fetuses were examined for cardiovascular abnormalities. Although cardiovascular abnormalities were noted in 3% of live fetuses and in 26% of litters in the

Association of abnormal glucose tolerance with liver-related disease and cardiovascular diseases in patients with chronic hepatitis C.

AIM: Hepatitis C complicated by diabetes mellitus (DM) is considered a risk factor for the progression of fibrosis and development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cardiovascular diseases. However, several studies may have lacked appropriate diagnosis of glucose intolerance. We aimed to examine the risk associated with abnormal glucose intolerance in the development of liver-related diseases, including HCC and complications of liver cirrhosis, such as ascites, esophageal and gastric varices, and hepatic encephalopathy, and cardiovascular diseases in patients with hepatitis C accurately di

Temporal trends of abnormal myocardial perfusion imaging in a cohort of Italian subjects: Relation with cardiovascular risk factors.

BACKGROUND: The frequency of abnormal stress single-photon emission computed tomography myocardial perfusion imaging (MPS) has decreased over the past decades despite an increase in the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors. This study evaluated the temporal trend of abnormal stress MPS and its relationship with risk factors in a cohort of Italian subjects. METHODS: We included all patients who underwent clinically indicated stress MPS at our academic center between January 2006 and December 2017. Patients were assessed for change in demographics, clinical symptoms, risk factors, and freq

Clinical aspects of the relationship between oral contraceptives and abnormalities of the hemostatic system: relation to the development of cardiovascular disease.

Epidemiologic evidence has established that oral contraceptives increase the risk of both arterial and venous thromboembolic disease. This is dose related in the case of the estrogen component for both arterial and venous events and in the case of progestogens for arterial events. It is probable that the increased rate of thromboembolic events caused by estrogen is related to hypercoagulability. Plasma levels of several clotting factors have been shown to be elevated in oral contraceptive users, and this increase is graduated according to the dose of estrogen. In pregnancy, factor VIIc is incr

Abnormal myocardial perfusion reserve and myocardial infarction determine cardiovascular outcomes in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

AIMS: In individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), both myocardial ischemia and myocardial infarction (MI) are associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. The incremental prognosis of both risks is unknown. We aimed to investigate whether abnormal myocardial perfusion reserve (MPR), as a surrogate marker for ischemia and presence of MI offers incremental prognostic value in predicting major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) in patients with T2DM. METHODS AND RESULTS: A retrospective multicentre cohort of 572 individuals with T2DM and healthy controls under

Neutrophil to albumin ratio predicts cardiovascular and all cause mortality in CVD patients with abnormal glucose metabolism.

This study examined the relationship between the neutrophil-to-albumin ratio (NPAR) and both all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in U.S. patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and abnormal glucose metabolism, using NHANES data from 1999 to 2018. Restricted cubic spline analysis identified a significant nonlinear association between NPAR and mortality (p < 0.001). Cox regression results showed that patients in the highest NPAR group (T3, ≥ 15.8) had higher risks of all-cause (HR 1.75, 95% CI 1.50-2.04) and cardiovascular mortality (HR 2.03, 95% CI 1.53-2.68) compared to the lowest group

Abnormal postexercise cardiovascular recovery and its determinants in patients after right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal responses of heart rate (HR) and oxygen uptake (VO2) during exercise characterize patients after right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction (RVOTR) for congenital heart defects. However, little is known about the postexercise dynamics. METHODS AND RESULTS: We evaluated postexercise cardiovascular dynamics in 52 patients after closure of an atrioventricular septal defect (group A), 79 patients after RVOTR (group B), and 44 control subjects. HR variability, arterial baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), plasma norepinephrine, and hemodynamics were measured. Although there was n

Subclinical left ventricular systolic dysfunction and incident stroke in the elderly: long-term findings from Cardiovascular Abnormalities and Brain Lesions.

AIMS: Heart disease is associated with an increased risk for ischaemic stroke. However, the predictive value of reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) for stroke is controversial and only observed in patients with severe reduction. LV global longitudinal strain (LV GLS) can detect subclinical LV systolic impairment when LVEF is normal. We investigated the prognostic role of LV GLS for incident stroke in a predominantly elderly cohort. METHODS AND RESULTS: Two-dimensional echocardiography with speckle tracking was performed in the Cardiac Abnormalities and Brain Lesions (CABL) study

The newborn examination: part I. Emergencies and common abnormalities involving the skin, head, neck, chest, and respiratory and cardiovascular systems.

The routine newborn assessment should include an examination for size, macrocephaly or microcephaly, changes in skin color, signs of birth trauma, malformations, evidence of respiratory distress, level of arousal, posture, tone, presence of spontaneous movements, and symmetry of movements. A newborn with one anatomic malformation should be evaluated for associated anomalies. Total and direct bilirubin levels should be measured in newborns with jaundice, and a complete blood count should be obtained in those with pallor or a ruddy complexion. Neurosurgical consultation is necessary in infants w

Correlation of the Fatty Liver Index with the Pathophysiological Abnormalities Associated with Cardiovascular Risk Markers in Japanese Men without any History of Cardiovascular Disease: Comparison with the Fibrosis-4 Score.

AIM: Fatty liver and the liver fibrosis are known risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The severity of fatty liver can be assessed by determining the fatty liver index (FLI), and the severity of liver fibrosis can be assessed by determining the fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) score. We examined the differences in the associations of these two liver scoring systems with the pathophysiological abnormalities associated with the risk of development of CVD. METHODS: The FLI and FIB-4 score were calculated in 2,437 Japanese men without any history of CVD. The serum NT-pro-BNP levels and brachial-ankle
