The Winthir Collection: An Identified Historical Skeletal Series From Munich, Germany.

Documented skeletal collections that can be linked to individual life-history information remain critical resources for bioarchaeological research, yet nonmodern identified series are still rare in Central Europe. We present the Winthir Collection, a late-19th-century skeletal assemblage from Munich, Germany, comprising 245 identified individuals recovered from an abandoned cemetery extension. Individual attribution was achieved through the integration of osteological analysis with grave registry data and archival sources. For most individuals, reconstructed profiles include age at death, plac

Occurrence of calcaneal spurs on skeletal remains of historical populations in the context of footwear development.

This communication is focused on monitoring the occurrence of plantar and dorsal exostoses (spurs) on the calcanei of skeletons from various dated historical periods. A total of 361 calcanei from 268 individuals were evaluated (prehistoric sites - Podivín, Modřice, Mikulovice; mediaeval sites - Olomouc-Nemilany, Trutmanice; modern age sites - the former Municipal Cemetery in Brno in Malá Nová Street, collections of the Department of Anatomy, Masaryk University, Brno). Differences in period footwear for individual population samples were taken into account when interpreting the findings. Health

Analysis of the Preserved Amino Acid Bias in Peptide Profiles of Iron Age Teeth from a Tropical Environment Enable Sexing of Individuals Using Amelogenin MRM.

The first dental proteomic profile of Iron Age individuals (ca. 2000-1000 years B.P.), collected from the site of Long Long Rak rock shelter in northwest Thailand is described. A bias toward the preservation of the positively charged aromatic, and polar amino acids is observed. It is evident that the 212 proteins identified (2 peptide, FDR <1%) comprise a palimpsest of alterations that occurred both ante-mortem and post-mortem. Conservation of amino acids within the taphonomically resistant crystalline matrix enabled the identification of both X and Y chromosome linked amelogenin peptides. A n

An innovative method to visualise mastoiditis using a hand-held X-ray system.

OBJECTIVE: We explore the utility of using a hand-held X-ray system to diagnose mastoiditis in archaeological populations. MATERIALS: A sample (n = 56) of hunter-fisher-gatherers from the Early Neolithic (8,000-7,000/6,800 cal. BP) Cis-Baikal cemetery of Shamanka II (Russia) were examined. METHODS: Images were taken medio-laterally, approximately 90° to a sensor temporarily affixed to the lateral surface of the mastoid process. Digital radiographs were analysed for signs of mastoiditis occurring pre- and/or post-puberty. RESULTS: Two thirds of individuals (39/56) exhibited evidence of masto

A 3000 year old case of an unusual dental lesion: Pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the cause of a large dental lesion, tentatively identified as a case of pre-eruptive intra-coronal resorption (PEIR), in the permanent second mandibular molar of a young individual from an Iron Age cemetery at Tel Erani (Israel), dated to ca. 3000 years B.P. The provisional diagnosis was based on the massive size of the lesion in a young individual in whom the adjacent teeth were caries-free and showed no visible enamel defects. DESIGN: The lower molars of Tel Erani on the affected side were radiographed and compared to radiographs of a modern clinical case of PEIR tre

The appearance of breast cancer metastases on dry bone: Implications for forensic anthropology.

Breast carcinoma is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in women. The study of bone pathologies presents considerable potential in anthropology, paleopathology, forensic science and medicine. In this paper, we present and discuss metastatic lesions found in the skeletons of known individuals from the CAL Milano Cemetery Skeletal Collection, clinically diagnosed with breast cancer during life. Fourteen skeletons from a contemporary and identified collection were macroscopically studied and metastases were identified by comparison with clinical literature. As a result, bone metastases were

Retracing the observations and footsteps of Beauchêne fils: A blueprint for scientific research.

Throughout the years, scientific and personal research has led us on a historical journey to learn about the life of Beauchêne fils (Edme François Chauvot de Beauchêne), a French clinical anatomist, prosector, and surgeon responsible for introducing the disarticulated skull technique and the first citation of an intraneural cyst. This letter describes our research, travels, and conversations intended to uncover the fascinating history of Beauchêne fils and his family and our journey full of unexpected twists and turns. During a trip to Paris, we learned of a possible inspiration for the disart

Investigation of a Medieval Pilgrim Burial Excavated from the Leprosarium of St Mary Magdalen Winchester, UK.

We have examined the remains of a Pilgrim burial from St Mary Magdalen, Winchester. The individual was a young adult male, aged around 18-25 years at the time of death. Radiocarbon dating showed the remains dated to the late 11th-early 12th centuries, a time when pilgrimages were at their height in Europe. Several lines of evidence in connection with the burial suggested this was an individual of some means and prestige. Although buried within the leprosarium cemetery, the skeleton showed only minimal skeletal evidence for leprosy, which was confined to the bones of the feet and legs. Nonethel

Trepanation to Treat a Head Wound: A Case of Neurosurgery from 13th-Century Tuscany.

During the archaeological excavations conducted in the 13th century cemetery of the Church of Sant'Agostino in Poggibonsi (Tuscany, Italy), a skull with evidence of neurosurgical intervention was brought to light. The skull, belonging to an adult male, shows two traumatic lesions produced by bladed instruments. The first lesion, located on the anterior part of the parietal bones, involved only the outer cranial table; bone remodeling indicates that the individual survived the injury for a long time. The second lesion, located on the frontal bone, involved all the thickness of the bone; the abs

Setting the stage for medieval plague: Pre-black death trends in survival and mortality.

OBJECTIVES: The 14(th) -century Black Death was one of the most devastating epidemics in human history, killing tens of millions of people in a short period of time. It is not clear why mortality rates during the epidemic were so high. One possibility is that the affected human populations were particularly stressed in the 14(th) century, perhaps as a result of repeated famines in areas such as England. This project examines survival and mortality in two pre-Black Death time periods, 11-12(th) centuries vs 13(th) century CE, to determine if demographic conditions were deteriorating before the

The girl from the church of the sacrament: a case of congenital syphilis in XVIII century Lisbon.

Syphilis is a sexually or congenitally transmitted infectious disease with an impact on the health of human populations that has undergone important cycles in different countries and periods of history. Its presence was first diagnosed in Europe in the late XIV century. In Portugal, although there are various written records of the infection in the last centuries, there are rare references to it in archeological findings (mummified bodies are also rare in Portugal). The current study describes a probable case of congenital syphilis in an 18-month-old girl buried in the Church of the Sacrament

Repeated plague infections across six generations of Neolithic Farmers.

In the period between 5,300 and 4,900 calibrated years before present (cal. BP), populations across large parts of Europe underwent a period of demographic decline1,2. However, the cause of this so-called Neolithic decline is still debated. Some argue for an agricultural crisis resulting in the decline3, others for the spread of an early form of plague4. Here we use population-scale ancient genomics to infer ancestry, social structure and pathogen infection in 108 Scandinavian Neolithic individuals from eight megalithic graves and a stone cist. We find that the Neolithic plague was widespread,

Material Analysis of Early Medieval Woven Bands from Gródek upon the Bug River and Pień, Poland.

This article presents the results of a comprehensive material analysis of medieval decorative bands from two different excavations in present-day Poland, specifically from early medieval cemeteries in Gródek upon the Bug River and Pień. The bands are complex materials composed of various fibres and precious metals, dyed with natural dyes using recipes that are often unknown today. They represent rare archaeological finds, challenging to analyse not only due to the complexity of their structure and materials but also because of significant deterioration caused by exposure to environmental condi

Comorbidity of panic disorder with agoraphobia and specific phobia: relationship with the subtypes of specific phobia.

The study objectives were to determine comorbidity rates for various subtypes of specific phobia (SP) in a sample of patients with the principal diagnosis of panic disorder with agoraphobia (PDA) and to examine the possible etiologic relatedness of these SP subtypes to PDA. Ninety consecutive day clinic patients with PDA were administered the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R (SCID) modified for DSM-IV. The overall comorbidity rate for SP was 65.6%. The most frequent subtypes of SP were situational phobia and dental phobia, followed by natural environment phobia, phobia of funerals,

[Longitudinal study of the mother and child population in an urban region of southern Brazil, 1993: methodological aspects and preliminary results].

All babies born in the hospitals of the city of Pelotas, Brazil, in 1982 were studied soon after delivery and followed up prospectively during the first years of their lives. In 1993, this study was repeated with a similar methodology, with the aim of assessing eventual changes in the level of maternal and child health. All five maternity hospitals in the city were visited daily and the 5,304 babies born included in the study. They were weighed and measured, and their gestational age was assessed using the Dubowitz method. Their mothers were examined and interviewed regarding a large number of

Im Osten etwas Neues: Anthropological analysis of remains of German soldiers from 1915-1918.

In the summer of 2005, exhumation and identification of the remains of German soldiers was performed in Panevezys (Northern Lithuania). Historical data indicate that in autumn of 1915 the building of a local gymnasium was transformed into a military hospital, and casualties were buried in its garden. The hospital functioned until the German withdrawal in the winter 1918. Archaeological finds include ID tags, personal items, residues of uniforms and medical devices. Routine anthropological analysis was performed on the site, as the remains had to be ready for scheduled reburial the same summer.

Climatic and density-dependent drivers of population dynamics in a hazardous urban scorpion species over seven years.

Tityus serrulatus Lutz & Mello (Scorpiones: Buthidae) is the most medically important scorpion in Brazil, responsible for a growing number of accidents in urban areas. Despite its relevance, the population dynamics of this species in anthropogenic habitats remain poorly understood, particularly regarding the influence of abiotic factors on its abundance and reproduction. We analysed long-term data (2006-2013) from T. serrulatus collected in an urban cemetery in the municipality of Americana, São Paulo State, Brazil. Using spatiotemporal mixed models, we evaluated the effects of temperature and

History of vestibular schwannoma management.

Eduard Sandifort, was the first to describe a vestibular schwannoma (VS) (acoustic neuroma) at postmortem in 1777. Pirsig, in 1991, described the temporal bone findings in the skeletons of two children buried in an early bronze age cemetery at Franzenhausen in Austria dating back to 2500 BC which are consistent with the bilateral VS of NF2-related schwannomatosis. The first attempts at VS surgery began in the late 19th century with the first successful removal by Annandale in Edinburgh in 1895. Early operative mortality rates were as high as 86%. The suboccipital approach was first popularized
